The Kahurangi Institute is a large school found on the outskirts of the city of Frostbank, Minnesota.

History

The Kahurangi Institute was founded in 1914 by Tipene (Stephen) Kahurangi, the grandfather of Manaia Kahurangi, the current Principal who bought the land the academy stands on and built the Kahurangi Manor. Stephen Kahurangi was happy to exploit anything and anyone in his business as a real estate tycoon and was one of the most respected citizens of the state of Wisconsin. But, when he suddenly developed the ability to control storms and weather, along with a head of feathers rather than hair he was ostracized and several people attempted to even kill him.

So using his wealth he converted his home into a school and safehouse for anyone like him who had nowhere to go.

Hohepa (Joseph) Kahurangi inherited his father’s mutation at the age of 30 and continued his father’s dream by further developing the land and taking in more Deviants

In the 80s the school was stormed by the fledgling Terrorist Group Humanity First! Many students and faculty were killed and more abandoned the school, Hohepa was also killed saving his daughter and some of her friends.

Finally, the current headmaster Manaia Kahurangi took over the school and attempted to rebuild it. Doing humanitarian work she raised funds to rescue as many Deviants as she could, especially from Humanity First and the bigotry the organization left in their wake. She also worked to set up a secret network of informants to alert her of any newly developed Deviants that need help.

Team Phoenix

Founded by Roxanne O’Riley after she learned about the Aeon Force by chance and was determined to revive it. Begrudgingly Manaia allowed her to do so as long as they were able to successfully pass several tests, encompassing intelligence, teamwork, power usage and physical strength.
