Overview

The Alls-Rule War, also known as the "East-West War," the "Cardinal War," and the "War of the World," is the longest-lasted conflict in recorded history, lasting an entire century from the years 2,870 YM to 2,970 YM. Waged by both the Westland Empire of Bariquel, and the Eastern Union of Rahmiel; alongside every major power of both the Aquatic and Abyssal Worlds; it stands alone as the single-most devastating conflict of all time, by measure of lives lost; killing an uncountable number of men, women, and children across every corner of the Known World. The repercussions of the Alls-Rule War remain an overhanging shadow across the land and sea, as all world events going forward were colored — at least in part — as direct consequence of its waging.

Although often collectively referred to as a singular conflict, the Alls-Rule War encompassed hundreds (if not thousands) of individual engagements reaching the level of wars in their own right, fought between various factions that varied widely by region. It is generally accepted that these respective conflicts share a common genesis in the assassination of Rythven Darkfang; then Supreme Chancellor of the Eastern Union, in 2,869 YM, shortly after his swearing into office.

The century preceding Rythven's death marked the buildup to the Alls-Rule War, characterized by internal conflict and acts of sabotage instigated by both the Imperial Crown and the Union Banner governments towards one another. Despite increasing hostilities, direct confrontation between the two superpowers did not occur until the official onset of the war. The period from 2,770 YM to 2,870 YM is collectively referred to as the "Interim Century," denoting its transitional and preparatory nature in relation to that of the Alls-Rule War.

These factors combine to render any overview of the Alls-Rule War a tightly bound knot, nearly impossible to unravel or summarize succinctly. The conflict simply encompasses too many moving parts, motivations, perspectives, and philosophies, dispersed across an extended span of time to be able to do so.

Impact

The impact of the Alls-Rule War on the Known World is without parallel. In the decades that followed its conclusion, nearly every event of consequence bore the imprint of its legacy; whether as a direct repercussion, or as a byproduct of the ideological, territorial, or political shifts it unleashed. State formations, regional collapses, global treaties, and cultural renaissances all emerged in response to, or in the shadow of, the Alls-Rule War. Entire populations were displaced or erased, lines on maps redrawn without precedent, and generations raised in the aftermath of devastation.

The war's imprint on memory, law, and diplomacy became so foundational that no occurrence of any geopolitical importance thereafter can be fully understood without reference to the conflict; either in least part, or in full, ultimately making the Alls-Rule War the sole axis in which defined the paradigm all subsequent world affairs would be measured.
