"Sure, your fancy plasma cannon might get the job done, but have ya ever seen a man stop a tank dead in its tracks with nothing but a laser pistol? No? That's what I thought."—Anonymous soldier
Amplifiers, or "amps" as they are more commonly known, are devices used to either increase the power of or alter the properties of the beams fired by laser weapons. They are greatly valued by soldiers and mercenaries across Cosmoria, as they allow the user to customize their weapon for a multitude of potential targets.
Characteristics
An Amplifier consists of a metal housing unit used to hold a small, carefully-cut crystal. The crystal, referred to as the focusing crystal, is what absorbs and alters the laser beam before it gets fired from the weapon. To turn a crystal into a focus, it must be cut and shaped to suit the weapon in question. Using an improperly-shaped crystal runs the risk of frying a laser weapon's circuits or even causing it to explode, depending on the crystal used. Fortunately, most users are careful enough to check their amps for any imperfections.
Once inserted, the amplifier will alter the properties of the beam as it is fired through the laser weapon. The effects can range from amplifying the beam's power to more esoteric effects such as electrifying the beam or even infusing it with thaumic energy. Rarer crystals invariably fetch a higher price, with many willing to pay generously for even one.
Amplifiers are usually used in small arms, but larger laser weapons are known to employ upscaled versions of common amps. However, as larger focusing crystals run the risk of carrying more hidden imperfections, these are generally only handed out to elite crews. Vehicle fitted out with amps have the potential to take on foes far larger than themselves, though they often end up as high-priority target.
Illegal Amps
While most amplifiers are readily available to buyers, some have been largely banned due to their horrifying effects on living beings. As such, a lucrative black market has sprung up for them.
