The Diego Fernandez Archipelago is a series of over a dozen volcanic islands a few hundred miles off the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.

The Islands of the Diego Fernandez Archipelago are comprised of porous volcanic rock, that is easily eaten away by seawater, allowing for the formation of a variety of large brackish-water lagoons, sealed off from the rest of the ocean, these bodies of water are evolutionary cauldrons, allowing for the development of thousands of unique species
