Workers are the backbone of every society—they provide it with culture, education, food, security, and technology. The adoption of socialism means workers are recognized for their incalculable efforts and are subsequently motivated to give everyone their best work. What they had to endure before the revolution was nothing short of a travesty, and let us hope it stays in the past.—Teid Castilion, 1st President of the Federation of Vangelia

Vangelia (pronounced /vand͡ʒɛlia/), officially the Federation of Vangelia, is a country spanning the medial portion of the Orion Arm. It borders the Republic of Tiarem spinward and the High Covenant’s rump states coreward. Its executive and judicial capital is Earth while its legislative capital is Boreas. The majority of its population is neohuman, with other sapient species constituting a sizable minority.
The Union of Vangelia was the precursor to the Federation. The Unity and Progress Party (UPP) was its sole legal party, as it had also been in the Martian Republic. Its ideology, national progressivism, sought to empower the capitalist class in the name of a vaguely defined human progress. Even then, it regularly abused its human population, not to mention what it already put Crostilvu immigrants through. Near the end of the 6th millennium CE, the Crostilvu Clan Assembly and Republic of Tiarem invaded the Union, fomenting dissent towards the UPP and strengthening the Federalist movement. Together, the Crostilvu and the Federalists defeated the Union in 6,000 CE. That very year, the Federation of Vangelia came to be and signed the Treaty of Msarah with the Crostilvu.
The Federation took measures to ensure humanity recovered from the civil war and the Union’s repressive systems never rose again. It adopted a mixture of market and planned socialism before moving to a fully planned economy. The wishes of the populace came to determine the approval or rejection of economic plans, meaning Vangelia had completely democratized its economy. In 7,804 CE, the country entered its first war with another civilization, the High Covenant. Despite fighting tooth and nail to survive, the conflict ended in Vangelia having to demilitarize and cede territories as part of the Treaty of Agemound in 7,806 CE. When the High Covenant Civil War broke out in 7,811 CE, Vangelia reclaimed all its lost space. It has since been searching for allies in case the High Covenant wages another war.
A socialist state, Vangelia is characterized by social ownership of the means of production, namely via directly elected workers’ councils (soviets). It is also transitioning towards communism, having met most of the requirements for this system, like the abolition of money, equalization of social classes, and unrestricted distribution of resources. The withering away of the state, already ongoing, is the last remaining step to the full communization of Vangelia. All progress made so far has eradicated problems like bigotry, disease, poverty, and violence, giving the country exceedingly high living standards.
Government
Vangelia is a federal republic, consisting of various self-governing areas beneath the federal level. It has two branches: the Federal Executive Committee (FEC) and the Supreme Soviet. They are, respectively speaking, the executive-judiciary and legislature, a model of power separation also found in subnational governments. Each branch has its specializations, but before applying to work for the state, its officials are universally required to be experienced members of soviets.

Demographics
Vangelia has a sapient population of 93.4 billion, 96% of which is neohuman. The remaining 4% consists of other sapients, their presence in the country being slightly over a thousand years old. The Crostilvu were the first to visit and become citizens of Vangelia. The second were the Raggatun and Kurnai, who arrived as refugees from the High Covenant Civil War. The three species receive de facto equal treatment, but the Raggatun, due to their association with the High Covenant, may be prejudiced against by humans and Kurnai in social situations.

Trivia
- The basic concept of Vangelia is a human nation-state. It changed three times during The Lone Horizon's development:
- Its first iteration was a large multispecies federation. It spanned one fifth of the Milky Way and had multiple extragalactic territories. It was named the Terran Protectorate before switching to Terran Communion.
- The second iteration, called the Terran Republic, was very small relative to the Milky Way and still had a multispecies population. As similar as it may have been to Vangelia, it was far younger, at roughly 800 years old.
- The third and current iteration initially bore the name Cassandria, honoring the first human of the Borealis Universe to step on an exoplanet, Cassandra Goodman. Because a Lone Horizon version of Cassandra was never written, she stopped being the namesake, the original character Karl Vangel taking over that role.
