Fission City is a large city in Southwestern Lee County in Florida, sitting on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It lays on top of millions of pounds of meteorite ejecta from the K-Pg Meteorite that struck the planet at the end of the Cretaceous.

History

66 million years ago, the area that would become Fission City was a shallow seabed home to a rich and biodiverse ecology including mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, turtles, sharks (Squalicorax, Cretoxyrhina, Ptychodus mortoni) large bony fish (Pachyrhizodus, Enchodus, Xiphactinus), mollusks, ammonites, belemnites, coccolithophores, Inoceramid Bivalves (Inoceramus, Platyceramus), various small reef fish and invertebrates, corals and many more. Seabirds such as Hesperornis and Ichthyornis and Pterosaurs like Pteranodon, Geosternbergia and Nyctosaurus were very common in the area. At the end of the Cretaceous, millions of pounds of Meteorite Ejecta settled in the area, and were buried by sediment over time. Following the meteorite impact, A shallow sea continued to cover most of the state during the Paleogene. Clams, echinoderms, and gastropods lived here.

During the Eocene, primitive whales like Basilosaurus swam over the area. Other inhabitants included large numbers of shelled invertebrates, sharks, and sirenians. During the ensuing Pliocene, the Fission City area was home to amphibians, bears, a variety of birds, camelids, crocodilians, deer, dogs, dugongs, at least six genera of horses, peccaries, porpoises, relatives of modern elephants, rays, saber toothed cats, seals, sharks (including the infamous Otodus megalodon), tapirs, turtles, and whales.

During the Pleistocene the area had a greater diversity of terrestrial vertebrates than any other place and time in North American history. At the time, the local sea level began to rise and fall along with the amount of water tied up in the glaciers covering the northern part of the continent. When the sea would withdraw savannas formed. Herds of American mastodon and Columbian mammoth browsed and grazed on the local foliage. The gigantic ground sloth Eremotherium was another contemporary large herbivore. Others included the antelope, bison, deer, armored glyptodonts, and the modern horse. These were preyed upon by predators like short-faced bears, jaguars, saber-toothed cats, lions, and dire wolves.

People living in the area of the present boundaries of Fission were part of the Manasota culture, an archaeological culture that existed in the area from Pasco County to Sarasota County from about 500 B.C. until about 900.

The Safety Harbor culture, which developed out of the Manasota culture around 900, covered much of the same area. Safety Harbor sites continued to be occupied after the Spanish reached Florida, as European artifacts have been found in the sites. Safety Harbor people built temple mounds in the primary towns of their chiefdoms.

Fission City was established in 1872, built on land that used to be a citrus orchard.
