A grimoire is an electronic device magi use to refine or redirect thaumic energy, or magic. Grimoires consist of a Liedrender, an Eidonkasse, and an Esprittolk, handling executing a program, entrapping a weakened spirit, and reading the magus' intent respectively. The device relies on a computer to remove mental noise from the signal—essentially as a middleman between the magus' mind and the source of their power.

The first grimoires were bulky and energy-hungry affairs kept in containers on a magus' back. Large wires from a magus' spinal cord ran into the device. Later versions became less invasive. For species with two eyes, an Esprittolk could replace one, giving it easy access to the magus' brain. Modern grimoires can read intent through the minute electric pulses sent through the nervous system, much like a prosthetic limb.

Grimoires are an essential technology for Eidonic Inertial Warding, spirit capture, and all manner of thaumaturgy in both industrial and military applications. The development of grimoires paved the way for computer technology broadly in Aylathiya, but in Florathel computers evolved from programmable looms, leading to wildly different interfaces between the two regions.
