The Holias-Hiril System, generally referred to as simply the Holias System due to Hiril's comparatively miniscule stature, is a major binary star system of the Vernarcan Federation. It can be found near the edge of the Ervo Sector's Vernarca Nebula, and is the capital system of the Erdathian Federal Republic, a Federation member state. The system is composed of the early G-class star Holias, and the late M-class Hiril, orbiting several thousand AU away. The Holias System contains twelve planets, with a majority of nine orbiting the primary star.
Architecture
Surrounding Holias, the inner system consists of just three planets – Eloraz, Lovos, and Erdath, with the Lijik Belt between the second and third. The outer system beyond the Eritho Belt consists of the other six: the supermassive Vulus, Olto-Pretora, Eru, Eptunis, and Elistal beyond the Lorvur Belt. The secondary star of Hiril possesses three tightly packed planets in its inner system, Prithill, Patagon, and Aard, beyond which lies the diffuse Hiso Belt.
Beyond Hiril and its little system, there lies an impressively large cloud of comets known as the Limit Cloud, extending outwards for tens of thousands of astronomical units until it merges with interstellar space. Many unremarkable dwarf planets and passing rogue worlds can be found here.
Formation & Evolution
Holias - Primary
Holias is a medium-high mass main sequence G0V star with nine planets, including the Lrenn homeworld of Erdath. Host to almost 90% of the mass of the star system, it is of course also home to the majority of the system's population, with several terraformed and heavily colonized worlds.
Hiril - Secondary
A miniscule red dwarf orbiting thousands of astronomical units beyond even Elistal, Hiril is the secondary star of the system. Its three tightly spaced planets exist in an unstable 6:7:13 orbital resonance. None of them are naturally habitable, although Patagon was carefully terraformed into a marginally livable state.
Inner Holias System
Eloraz is by far the closest world to Holias, and is among the smallest of the planets at 0.961 Terrestrial masses. Orbiting once every 1.69 standard days, Eloraz' entire surface has been thoroughly melted with a non-negligible atmosphere of vaporized silicates. Thus, Eloraz is completely useless outside of pulling material off of it for mining purposes. Eloraz, obviously, has no moons.
Despite being over ten times as distant as Eloraz, Lovos is still far from the temperate zone. Its relatively thin atmosphere rains sulfuric acid, which evaporates long before hitting the superheated wasteland of the surface. Lovos is considered a terraforming prospect for the Erdathian Federal Republic, but sheer amount of infrastructure required to do so and the presence of other political issues have prevented the project from going ahead as of yet. Lovos has no moons.
Lijik Belt
Between Lovos and Erdath lies the Lijik Belt, a rarified cloud of asteroids orbiting from ~0.4 to 1 AU. This belt was the site of the first Lrenn exploration missions and colonies beyond Erdath's sphere of influence, and today is populated by enormous numbers of mobile habitat stations.
The most famous and populous world of the Holias System, Erdath is the homeworld of the widespread Lrenn species, a founding member of the Vernarcan Federation, and capital of the Erdathian Federal Republic. Erdath is the only world in the system to give rise to natural intelligent life, and currently holds a population of over four trillion people.
Erdath's sphere of influence is filled with a number of impressive habitation structures, but most notable is a shining natural ring system left untouched by mining efforts as a cultural artefact. Its twin large moons of Verto and Lirtso have also been heavily colonized by the Lrenn and later other species of the Vernarcan Federation, and hold large populations of their own.
Eritho Belt
Beyond Erdath and below the orbit of the monstrous world of Vulus lies the Eritho Belt. The Eritho Belt is home to a number of notable objects, including the dwarf planet Monto and the large asteroid of Mulitor. It is also populated by a number of habitation structures, and was subject to heavy mining operations in the early days of civilization's history here.
Outer Holias System
The largest world in the Holias System, Vulus is just a bit over one Jovian mass. Sitting just inside the frost line, Vulus is seen as the gateway to the outer Holias System and the exploration of its major moons was a key milestone in the exploration of the system as a whole. Vulus has a powerful magnetosphere, undampened by planetary rings, making unshielded habitation here extremely dangerous even to unhardened computers.
Vulus possesses over a hundred moons, most of which are miniscule asteroids captured from comets or the Eritho Belt. Its four major moons are Orla, Flortan, Aro, and Esto.
Olto and Pretora are a pair of Jovian planets found at around twice the distance to Vulus, adding up to just over Vulus' mass between them. The two worlds host a single major moon, Locor, which hosts the majority of the system's population, shielded from the radiation belts under artificial magnetic fields.
The first of two ice giants in the Holias System, Eru is a dark and distant world, barely an afterthought in interstellar affairs. Its moon of Orata is famous for its massive cryovolcanism and uniquely young surface compared to the rest of the solar system. Out of its thirty-seven moons, it has three major ones: Celotor, Orata, and Lorost.
Similar to Eru, Eptunis is an ice giant, although it is both larger and colder than its outer system companion. It receives thousands of times less light than the inner system, requiring long exposure to see anything under natural light, and independent power sources for anyone who resides out here. The vast majority of its heat comes from its interior, dating back to its formation and creating massive storm systems and supersonic winds across the planet. Eptunis has two major moons: Menro and Meldoz.
Lorvur Belt
The Lorvur Belt is an ice asteroid belt beyond Eptunis, which is unusually rich in deuterium. It is filled with a great many dwarf planets, as well as uncountable asteroids and comets filled with habitats. Notable objects within it include Lorto-Corenes–a binary–and Vurlo, two large dwarf planets which host massive virtual populations. Vurlo's orbit takes it beyond even Elistal on its sweeping ellipse.
The final planet of the Holias System, Elistal is a darkened world lit only by the occasional lamp fielded by its few inhabitants. Its position so far off the beaten path and harsh conditions mean that it is populated by a tiny number of flesh and blood beins, but they operate an impressive array of computational systems which thrive on the low temperatures. Trillions of simulated beings reside in the Elistal computers, making it a surprising linchpin of the system's "economy".
Scattered Disk
The Scattered Disk is a sparse disk of objects beyond the Lorvur Belt and the inexplicably placed Elistal, containing few notable objects. The scattered disk peters out at ~2000 AU, beyond which Hiril's gravity destabilizes anything in orbit.
Hiril System
Prithill is a volcanic rocky world, on the cusp of being torn apart by its miniscule star's gravity. Its massive geological activity produces an infrared-visible tail emanating from it, formed from volcanic material. Prithill's surface is utterly inhospitable, and has been used for little more than resource extraction across history.
Patagon is in a very similar situation to Prithill, orbiting in an unstable 6:7 resonance right up next to it. It is a rare example of a hot gas dwarf, although the rapid erosion of its atmosphere means that it may not stay that way for very long. Over long periods of time, the orbits of Prithill and Patagon become wildly unpredictable with even the smallest inaccuracy.
Aard is a small, cold world, covered in windswept ice, rock and sand. It is arguable that it is a terraforming prospect, but no one really cares. Its surface is sheathed in a thin atmosphere, which helps hold in absolutely none of Hiril's heat.
Hiso Belt
The Hiso Belt consists of a thick belt and cloud of icy objects orbiting beyond Aard. Much of its contents were captured from the neighboring regions of the Limit Cloud, likely including the massive ringed dwarf planet of Pakno, ironically the most populated object in the system.
