The Iyulo are the most populous species in the Tarmalyula Galaxy. They are quintepedal, spider-like creatures that hail from the planet of Golr're.
Biology
Eating
The Iyulo eat communally, seeing eating as something to be done in the company of other people, at all times. They eat by discharging the top of their body, and then using some of their limbs to rip apart plants and place them in the cavity formed by the top of their body being discharged. They then replace the lost flesh, and it heals. In the event that they lose the flesh that has been taken out of their top, they can, over the course of a couple of years, re-grow it. This is frowned upon by society, and those top-less Iyulo are usually downtrodden.
Drinking
Iyulo drink in mostly the same way as they eat - by pouring water into the same cavity that opens up when they eat. Because they eat rarely, they also have pores all over their body that suck water from the open air and from materials that they are touching.
Hearing
Iyulo don't have ears per say - the pores that cover their body detect and translate sounds into neural signals that travel to the central brain. Because hearing is their primary sense, a good chunk of their formidable brainpower goes into making sounds waves into a 3D model of their surroundings, as well as being able to detect texture.
Smelling
Iyulo smell through the pores on their skin, absorbing air and water which contain molecules that are detected by smell receptors embedded deeper into the creatures, near its lungs. Smell is a vital part of Iyulan life, as it is the secondary way that they communicate.
Seeing
Iyulo barely see, having five small eyes on every limb, twenty-five in total. This makes a black-and-white picture, with barely any colour. However, this picture is not 3D. Combined with, hearing, this system makes the Iyulo very conscious of their surrounding, with excellent proprioception.
Moving
Iyulo scutter around like a large spider on their five legs, each very strong to support the creature. At times, they can move around on as little as three feet, though this is not as fast as normal.
Sleeping
Iyulo have a deep-seated fear of sleeping, as another creature on Golr're, the Corkal, which preyed on Iyulo when they were not intelligent. They sleep in communal houses, with each watching the others for signs of the (since domesticated) Corkal.
Communicating
Iyulo communicate in two ways - either hearing others talk, or smelling pheromones emitted by scent glands on their shoulders.
Hearing
Iyulo have a language that can best be described as music from the standpoint of a non-Iyulan viewer. They 'chime' notes, which communical words and emotions to other Iyulo.
Psychology
Iyulo are a very communal species, living in huge megacities that house hundreds of millions to billions of Iyulo at a time. When isolated from their kin, they slowly descend into madness and insanity. This is why the worst punishment, worse than death, for an Iyulo, is solitary confinement. They also are very creative and inquiring. This is why their civilization advanced twice as fast as the average civilization, reaching nuclear fusion only five thousand years after the first glints of civilization evolved on a river bank at the heart of a lush continent on Golr're.
