Lareas
5-light-year long stellar jets spouting off of Corrosa, a newborn star in Lareas and the site of a major battle between the two largest clans of the region.

Lareas is a small, very remote region of space which can be found near the edge of Florathel, in the Outer Elerad Arm. Lareas was at one point ruled by the ancient and esoteric Karvel Civilization, a little-known nation or collection of nations whose fall truly began the known history of the region. It is now ruled by hundreds of squabbling feudal clans of varying sizes, following the collapse of the central government of the Karvel Civilization, the loss of most records, and the descent into a technological dark age unparalleled across the galaxy.

Today, the even the largest of the clans controls little more than five percent of the region and the smallest can be a single system or even less. These clans are linked by a complex web of alliances and rivalries, and it is very difficult for outsiders to map or even reach it. At least partially due to the conquests of the vanished Karvel Civilization, the region is very sterile, with only four intelligent species found across the region, all of which are genetically related in some way. No species have truly emigrated to the region either.

History

The history of Lareas is long, bloody, and difficult to research due to the fractious and violent political state in the region. Thus, much is known about the early modern and modern history of the region, but very little information can be found about the precursor civilization of the clans, known simply as the Karvel Civilization, or anything before it.

Ancient History

Due to the orbiting of stars which are today found in the Lareas region, these stars were scattered thinly and seemingly arbitrarily across the galaxy, making it pointless to describe the history of the region in this time.

Political Structure

The Lareas region is defined as the greatest extent of the Karvel Civilization at its height, the fall of which triggered the creation of the many feudal clans which define the region's politics. Due to the civilization's habit of sterilizing potential colony worlds and their drastic shrinkage in the period before their fall, the region is split into three rough areas, as follows:

Central Lareas

Central Lareas, with quintillions of people spread over only 650 stars, is the most populated part of Lareas and contains the remaining major planets of the Karvel Civilization as well as the anomalous black hole of Nerva. Many of these planets are artificially offset from the rest of the universe in the fourth spatial dimension, making them both very difficult to reach but mostly safe from the ravages of the constant raids. Also found here are Senoros and Kibir clans, two of the most powerful of the clans of Lareas, and mortal enemies.

The aforementioned black hole Nerva forms one of the only consistently peaceful parts of Central Lareas due to a key property which has found only around Nerva itself to date. Nerva appears to be sentient in some way, and has control over its gravitational force, capable of creating a sharp increase in its pull in a certain direction. This makes it very dangerous to travel within ~1 light-year of Nerva, as the black hole appears to preferentially increase its gravity in the direction of large objects. Central Lareas also has a collection of small nebulae about which little can be said.

The Colonies

The Colonies region is the site of the last colonies of the Karvel Civilization, and has a much lower population than Central Lareas. It forms a spherical shell around Central Lareas with a radius roughly three times larger. Despite its large size, the Colonies only have ~1/5 of the population, and are mostly populated by smaller clans which emigrated away from the chaos in Central Lareas.

The Dead Zone

The Dead Zone contains almost 70 percent of the Lareas region. It has almost zero population, caused by the Karvel Civilization cutting off many of their outermost colonies and allowing them to succumb to various problems and errors. Contained within the dead zone is the Elachor Cluster, in which the aforementioned archaeological sites pertaining to the Lareas Alliance can be found. These sites contain among the most pristine and highly concentrated artefacts created by the Alliance, but are not well-researched due to their extreme remoteness from any interested civilizations.
