Maeve is a mutant female sea lamprey, who was made anthropomorphic and fully sentient by Dr. Paradigm. She was originally an underling of the doctor, but she quickly defected to the Selachian Society after being captured by them and treated with genuine kindness.

History

Maeve hatched somewhere in St. Andrew's bay several years prior to joining the Selachian Society. At some point, Maeve was caught by Dr. Robert Bolton before he became Dr. Paradigm, after he found her latched onto a fish he had caught while fishing in St. Andrew's bay. Dr. Bolton took her back to his lab, where Maeve was kept in an aquarium for the next few months until Dr. Bolton tested his Geno-Slammer on himself, mutating him into Dr. Paradigm. After his mutated lab assistants escaped the lab, Paradigm decided to use the Geno-Slammer on several other aquatic animals to be used in hunting his former assistants down. Maeve was selected as one of these subjects, along with a blue crab named Crawler, a common octopus named Kraken, and an alligator gar named Alyssa. The Geno-Slammer made Maeve grow to be several times the size of a usual sea lamprey, and caused her to develop arms, hands, lungs, sentience, and the ability to speak. Of the 4 mutants, Maeve proved to be the least effective in combat, as well as the least aggressive. During the mutants first engagement with the Selachian Society, Maeve only entered combat when Kraken grabbed her and threw her right into Marina Quinn. Maeve made vain attempts to bite into Marina, but these were all unsuccessful attacks. After squirming out of Marina's grasp several times, Maeve was finally grabbed by the tail by Marina, and thrown into a dumpster. When the other 3 mutants eventually retreated, Maeve was retrieved from the dumpster by the Selachian Society, captured, and taken with them to the Fission City Aquarium. Maeve quickly joined the Selachian Society very shortly after her capture by them. Maeve became a more auxiliary member of the team, usually only directly participating in missions where stealth was needed.

Personality and Traits

Maeve generally acts quite strange and enigmatic, mainly due to her developing ASD during her mutation. She can quite often be seen stimming, usually by squirming around on the floor, or attaching and detaching her suction-cup mouth onto objects. Maeve is hypersensitive to noise, light, and touch, with sudden loud noises in particular sometimes sending her catatonic for minutes on end. Maeve enjoys being touched, due to her hypersensitivity amplifying the sensation, but only if it's someone she's comfortable with doing it. She often crawls into tight spaces, like between couch cushions or under piles of blankets and pillows, as it brings her comfort. When alarmed or upset, Maeve develops a noticeable jitteriness and stutter.

Appearance

Maeve resembles a normal sea lamprey, but with several noticeable physical differences due to her mutation. These include the two arms she possesses, the wider section of her body around her midpoint that resembles a torso, and the fact she is significantly larger than a normal lamprey. Maeve has no hind limbs, and she moves on land by slithering using her smooth and incredibly slippery skin. Maeve's skin is colored on patterns of greens, browns, and yellows, and her eyes are wide and yellow.

Relationships

  • Marina Quinn - Despite their first interaction involved Maeve getting thrown into a dumpster and captured, Marina was also the first of the Selachian Society members to empathize and treat Maeve with kindness when she was brought back to Selachian HQ. Since then, Maeve's felt some form of bond to Marina, finding comfort in her presence, and having a tendency to hang around Marina. Marina is usually the first person Maeve looks to for reassurance and protection.
