The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy located in the Local Group galactic neighborhood and is the second largest member of it. It is often referred to as the: "Galaxy of Origins." It is the home of three hundred and fifty billion stars, hundreds of billions of worlds, and countless lifeforms. The diameter of the Milky Way from end to end is roughly 126,000 light years. The Milky Way contains over 400 Billion stars, the majority of which have planetary systems.

The term "Milky Way" is a translation of the Latin via lactea, from the Greek γαλαξίας κύκλος (galaxías kýklos, "milky circle"). The name "Via Lactea" its still used by speakers of the ancient Human-Romance languages to call the Milky Way, being an alternative name for this Galaxy even today.

The Milky Way Galaxy has had a profound affect on the wider Borealis Cluster outside of its borders, as it served as the galaxy of origin for many civilizations that would colonize billions of systems across the galaxies, comprised of trillions of worlds, and inhabited by thousands of intelligent species. There doesn't seem to be an exact reason for this, but thanks to this anomalous trait of its history, it is known by species that came from it as the "Galaxy of Origins."

Many of the largest players in the Borealis Cluster have come from the Milky Way, including humans and thousands of other intelligent species that have colonized many worlds and galaxies. Despite this however, no one unified government holds control over the whole of the galaxy. Instead, hundreds of separate nations of various sizes hold control over their own respective regions.

The galaxy is known by countless different names across the numerous species that inhabit its respective galactic arms, however the most common meaning of names given to it refer to it appearing as if liquid had been poured across the sky, hence why names like: "Milky Way" have remained in many popular cultures.

Another famous aspect of the galaxy is the sheer abundance of satellite galaxies in orbit around it, with a total of fifty-six smaller galaxies in orbit around it, each with their own respective worlds and species.
