Overview

Luna, is the first and only natural sattilite of Earth. It orbits Earth at an average distance of 384399 km (238,854 mi; about 30 times Earth's diameter). The Moon's orbital period (lunar month) and rotation period (lunar day) are synchronized by Earth's gravitational pull at 29.5 Earth days, making the same side of the Moon always face Earth. The Moon's pull on Earth is the main driver of Earth's tides.

Luna is one of the first continually inhabited planets, being colonised by Corporations and nations from Earth in equal parts since the 21st century. Luna is also the first astronomical object that humans have set foot on with the United States of America landing Neil Armstrong on its surface on July 20, 1969. The site remains of heavy historical significance to this day.

Luna has been split up into multiple soverign states by its centuries of Colonisation, most of which are proper members of the United Nations.

Orbiting Luna are several stations, which regularly take passengers from around the solar system in, it is considered a large shipping hub and a major millitary base with the majority of the United Nations Fleet being stationed in its orbit.

History

Antiquity

Luna, being the brightest object outside of Sol, has influenced human civilisation since pre-historic times with them developing intricate perceptions of the Moon. Over time the Moon has been characterized and associated in many different ways, from having a spirit or being a deity, and an aspect thereof or an aspect in astrology, being made an important part of many cosmologies.

It is also known that since pre-historic times people have taken note of Luna's phases and its waxing and waning cycle and used it to keep record of time. Tally sticks, notched bones dating as far back as 20–30,000 years ago, are believed by some to mark the phases of the Moon. The counting of the days between the Moon's phases eventually gave rise to generalized time periods of lunar cycles as months, and possibly of its phases as weeks.
