The World
Edna, the world, is a sphere so ancient, that it predates the arrival of the Gods who claimed it. Its origins are unknown and, most likely, another divinity occupied it before them. One can still witness its mark left in Edna, entire centuries since its mysterious departure, its most obvious trace left behind are the Primordial Beasts, a collective group of various monster species.
Gods of Edna
Gods and their Children
The Gods, Neva and Agrim were determined to eradicate those malevolent monsters. At first, they fought them with light and darkness, but soon the Beasts adapted. And so, the Gods created their first children: The Celestials and the Demons. And their task was to cleanse the world from Primordial Beasts. However, their children eventually turned against each other. The conflict was devastating and the Celestials faced extinction, save for a few powerful ones whose spirits survived and went on to light up the path for the third child of the Gods, the Humans.
Primordial Beasts
The Primordial Beasts were ancient monsters of varying shapes and types. Every family of Beast had its own Elder Beast that created the rest of their kind. Some Elders were leading the rest of their offspring while other Elders didn't really care about them or even turned against them. Due to their incredible powers and how difficult it was to kill one of them, the Elder Beasts were considered great trophies among the Celestials and Demons who were hunting them.
The First Ages
Introduction to the first ages.
I - Age of Clarity
Neva and Agrim are as ancient as the existence of the universe itself. Nobody knows where they come from or what they did before they found the world of Edna. All we know is that they discovered this place and decided to stay, taking a fair interest in this sphere which was quite different from how it is today. Both - lands and seas - were infested with malevolent Great Beasts of all kinds, roaming aimlessly without any other purpose than survival. It was a gray world where time had no meaning.
Upon their arrival, Neva and Agrim brought Light and Darkness, but the beasts adapted. Then the goddess of light, Neva, created the Celestials, who were bright and fair like her. Agrim, the god of night brought to life the Demons, ferocious and relentless. Together, they set out to cleanse the earth from the vile creatures, so they could make it their home. The Celestials would hunt them under the sun while the Demons would chase them at night.
The Primordial Beasts were a collective group of different monsters, each kind led by their own Elder. Those Elders were far more powerful than the rest of their offspring and they were priced as trophies among both Celestials and Demons. An inconceivable amount of time had passed, before they had managed to eradicate most of the Primordial Beasts. Some survived by finding ways to hide from them, while others fled to the most desolate parts of the world.
Finally, the children of the gods settled down and divided the land between them. The Celestials worshiped Neva, as she made the sun bright and the Demons worshiped Agrim who kept the night starry. The world was gray no more and their realms grew big.
II - Age of Decadence
Ekonar was made a king among the Demons, his flame was the brightest and he had led them in many successful hunts against the Great Beasts and his Queen was Nileth, the most powerful witch of their kin. Although, not all among the Demons were satisfied with this decision.
The most renowned among those who sought to be in charge was Balloth. The only Demon who could stand taller than Ekonar and who had made a name for himself during the Great Hunt. Balloth and Ekonar had become good friends, but when the latter became king they grew distant. Ekonar was hailed, held in high regard and pride got to him making him tell Balloth that he had to address him as king, they were friends no more.
Balloth felt sour and left along with his followers to settle at the roots of the Red Mountains and there he laid low. During one of his lone walks on the mountain, he met Aphis, an Elder Beast that had survived the Great Hunt. At first, Balloth tried to catch it, but that proved difficult to do since Aphis was elusive like a serpent, and taunted the Demon before the latter would give up and try again another day. Sometime later, Balloth began answering Aphis' mockery, making the two eventually develop a bond. Balloth would share his thoughts with the ancient snake, who in the pretense of understanding and sympathy, offered his help, and together they devised a plan to bring down the Demon King.
Aphis had great powers and used them to conceal Balloth and his like-minded usurpers from the daylight, to ambush others of their own kind during the day, when Demons were weakened. This drew the attention of Ekonar who sought help from Balloth, unaware of the betrayal of his former friend, he walked right into Balloth's castle where he was slain. It didn't take long for Ekonar's followers and the Queen to figure out who was responsible for Ekonar's sudden disappearance. Balloth fled from the realm of the Demons and sought refuge in the lands of the Celestials.
The Celestials granted him asylum and refused to return him to Nileth. Neva and Agrim had taught their children that they had no right to harm or kill one another and they knew that returning Balloth to Nileth was going against the wishes of Neva whom they worshipped.
War of terrible magnitude followed The Celestials were gallant and the Demons were ravenous. Nileth led the Demons against the Celestial realm. Laying waste on many of their great cities as both sides suffered great losses. Lumina, the great capital of the Kingdom of Light stood still. Nileth couldn't break through their walls, so she created a new spell, a spell that required her to sacrifice a large number of her own followers, so she could drain their souls - the source of power for casting spells. A curse that would strike all of the remaining Celestials simultaneously, no matter where they were, reaching to the scattered ones that had fled to hide as well as those who kept putting up resistance. The sky cracked like glass above each one as their bodies fell lifeless before getting up again, maimed into soulless ghouls, without thought or mind of their own anymore. Only the great leaders of the Celestials escaped this fate. As Nileth's curse drew near, they chose to abandon their physical bodies, in order to survive as spirits. They would never be able to reform physically after this.
The Departure
Deafening were the atrocities which the Demons were committing against their brothers and sisters. Neva and Agrim, either as a punishment or out of anger or even sadness, shook Edna and the lights died out. Sun, moon and stars were there no more. And a never ending storm ensued. This cataclysmic event made the victorious but depleted Demons hide under the earth, digging caves and paths ever deeper to escape from the wrath of the Gods. They asked for forgiveness but no answer came and they sealed Nileth away in the deepest dungeon they had made and left her there.
As time passed, the tales of their past and of Nileth in particular impressed newer generations who started forming a cult. How could a mere Demon cast such powerful spells as Nileth's? How could she be capable of taking a blessed child's life just with her own thoughts? This new cult was called "The Retribution" and claimed Nileth must have been wielding Agrim's own powers, granted to her by him personally to lay punishment to the Celestials and Balloth. There was no other explanation for them. But the other believers of Agrim, the Orthodox, opposed this idea and the two sides clashed in a violent war taking place in their underground city.
The Orthodox won eventually and Nileth remained imprisoned. After a long time, the Demons decided to open their gate to Edna and look at what had become of the world while they were hiding. They found out the storm had passed. The sun had come back and so had the moon. But something had changed. There was a new being now reigning over Edna. It was Humans, their younger sibling.
