Powerline Paranormal is an urban horror scope taking place on a version of Earth where a variety of preternatural, supernatural, and generally Weird phenomena exist, are prevalent, yet remain unknown to most of the public. As an urban horror setting, it mostly focuses on local or individual events.

Themes

Powerline Paranormal uses certain themes, limits, and boundaries to create a contemporary horror setting that depicts the familiar world face intrusion by the unfamiliar, much to the terror of the people living in it. Existence is chaotic and irrational, and the universe, not inanimate, ranges from apathetic to hostile. The setting can encompass a variety of contemporary horror subcategories, including psychological horror, cosmic horror, and modern gothic.

The Normal and The Weird

The main boundary that is trespassed in Powerline Paranormal is between the Normal, which is familiar and follows the rules of nature, and the Weird, which is not and does not and tends to be hostile. Whatever follows the typical conceptions of reality is Normal, and whatever does not is Weird. The classification of the two is not static and varies based on opinion. It is not necessary that horror is derived from the Weird or safety from the Normal, merely typical.

The Real and the Unreal

Reality, whether Normal or Weird, is not constant in Powerline Paranormal. Frequently, people will drift between the waking world and that of dreams, or find that fiction has affected reality, or vice-versa. Generally, Unreality correlates with Weirdness, but not solely. Plenty of Weird things are terribly material.

Inside and Outside

The Universe is known as the Inside. It is called this in relation to all the other realities, known as the Outside. The Inside is the main setting of the scope, to be the most fleshed out and focused on. The worldbuilding of the Outside should be secondary to the affairs of the Inside. The Outside intrudes upon the inside, but not vice-versa. The Outside is often Weirder, but more common Weird comes from Inside.

Limits

The boundaries of different conflicting themes form limits. In liminal spaces, Normal and Weird, Real and Unreal, and Inside and Outside start to blend together. The exemplary limit is the Pretercosm, the dimension that buffers the Inside from the Outside and intersects with dreams, which are Unreal.

Secrecy

Due to a number of factors, the Weird is kept mostly secret in the Inside. Shadow governments, secret societies, underground groups, and fringe theorists are the main people to actually document the Weird, while the rest of society is left mostly ignorant. As a rule, nothing Weird can come to the knowledge of the wider public, though the rule is looser in regards to internet communities.

Collaboration

Powerline Paranormal is OPEN to any contribution that follows the guidelines. It is a fully collaborative scope with no owners. Collaboration is encouraged because the scope has little overarching rules, so it will thrive with more authors.

Guidelines

  • Every article has to be diegetic. This means that someone, somewhere, had to actually create the article content in-universe. This can include diaries, historical records, audio transcripts, blogs, forum posts, wiki articles, and more. Do not feel limited to Normal means of documentation, the Weird is ever-present. You may choose to use the Diegetic template, but make sure to indicate what the document is in the location field.
  • Put articles in both a category for their topic and for their location, if applicable. This means categorizing an article both by its content and, for example, the in-scope website it is on.
  • Articles should focus on events of a local or personal scale. Generally, nothing that would become known by the wider world can happen, preserving secrecy of the Weird.
  • Articles should be horror-focused or horror-themed. The intention of the scope is to establish fear and horror. Not every page has to be a horror story, but the fact that horror is a present force in the world should be taken into account.
