Captain Su'uni Ash Nikal was a 2nd century officer in the Verdan Federation Space Force. One of the most accomplished and decorated captains in Federation history, he commanded the FSS Kareland for 31 years during its unscheduled journey across the Silky Way until his death during the Battle of the Colony at the close of the War of the Broken Bow. His captaincy of Kareland and its unprecedented long-range voyage across the galaxy became legendary after its unexpected return in 149. On this journey, he encountered a great number of new planets and species, and made first diplomatic contact with more civilizations than any other captain in history.
After Kareland's return to the Ervo Sector in the midst of the War of the Broken Bow, he attempted to retire to his farm on Campura with his wife and former helmsman Su'uresh Rai Nikal and their children. This was not to last, as his conscience forced him to retake command of the aging Kareland in a last-ditch attempt to defeat the Void, where he died in the climactic Battle of the Colony by detonating a strange matter bomb aboard the central Void ship. With this act, he is often credited with singlehandedly ending the War of the Broken Bow, although he would vehemently dispute this assessment were he still alive. He is survived by his two children.
Early life
Su'uni Ash Nikal was born in the last days of 94 AC in the small town of Ashad, Arnena on Campura. His mother abandoned the family shortly after his birth for reasons unknown, but likely related to his father finally saying no to something. His upbringing was generally peaceful, where he made few but loyal friends during his schooling. WIP

Ru'alo Eir Nikal
Shortly before he was promoted to captain and given command of Kareland, Ash Nikal met and quickly fell in love with a colleague aboard the Revalla, Ru'alo Eir Ekrai. Although Eir Ekrai did not transfer to the Kareland alongside him, the two continued a long-distance relationship, spending shore leaves together where possible. They were married in 114, and hoped to settle down after their careers wound down.
These plans came to a crashing halt when Kareland was lost in Keuramaske's Labyrinth and Ash Nikal was presumed dead. Eir Nikal kept his married name and held out hope for much longer than most of his colleagues did, but eventually 'realized' that he was clinging to a fantasy. He began living his life again and letting go of the past. He held a small funeral and later remarried.
By the time the War of the Broken Bow began in 147 AC, he had attained the rank of captain aboard the starship Selbig. The ship was lost with all hands in a Void offensive in 149 AC, just a week before the Kareland's return.
Eska
Su'uresh Rai Nikal, born Su'uresh Rai Ekil in 89 AC, was one of Kareland 's pilots, often serving as helmsman. Ash Nikal interacted with her little outside of a strictly professional relationship for the first twelve years or so of their time serving on the same ship, even after Kareland was pulled to the Astros Sector. Their first real interaction came in the form of her absolutely trouncing him at a game of Triads in the officers' mess in 129, which began a friendship which soon went sideways into romantic entanglement after he finally realized that pining after Ru'alo was pointless.
News of the two's whirlwind romance quickly spread through the ship. Some theorized that she would suddenly start rising through the ranks again, but this didn't happen as the two exhibited a great skill for separating their personal and professional lives. By day, he spoke to her on the bridge mostly as he would any other crew member, and by night a switch flipped and they would have a lot of fun behind some walls that were thinner than they thought they were.
Their relationship was solidified by Arnenan tradition in 134 by the birth of twins, Rura Shra and Sa'era Lor Nikal. While she carried them, she took time off from flying the patrol wings as anyone would in that situation. However, she refused to stop working at the helm station, rationalizing it that her womb can do its job just as well at the helm console as in her quarters all day. After their birth, she finally took a leave under a joking order from her husband.
After trauma endured during his imprisonment at Salvateria in 140, his relationship with his wife never recovered. The two broke apart the same year shortly before the discovery of the Flashpoint Network, although they remained close friends and staunch advocates for each other, and he continued to be a loving father to his children.
After their return to the Ervo Sector in 149 and Nikal's retirement, Su'uresh was promoted to captain of the FSS Pauli, and under her command it became the first ship to join the Kareland's order-violation fleet in the Battle of the Colony. While Pauli was destroyed in the battle, her deft command learned from her years under Nikal's command ensured that casualties were minimal.
