Critically Endangered
The Sukotyro (Sukotyro indicus) is a large, cow sized pig, endemic to the island of Java in Indonesia.
Description and Ecology
The Sukotyro is a member of the Babyrousinae subfamily.
The Sukotyro has a coat of short black or dark brown fur, two large Tusks that emerge from the top of the snout like the closely related Babirusa that frequently curve upwards towards the eyes, occasionally even piercing the eye and growing into the skull, they also have large bushy tails that they use as a signal to members of their family groups and to swat flies away.
Conservation
The Sukotyro is very rare and listed as Critically Endangered, primarily due to loss of habitat but they are also very slow breeders and are occasionally hunted for their tusks.
