Mankind Spreads Throughout the Stars
This content takes place in the Vangelia setting of The Lone Horizon.

Origins

The Union

The Federation

Pre-Invasion Era

  • 7,805 CE:
    • Vangelian subspace probes detect spacecraft of unknown origin moving through an uncharted system. They send radio messages greeting the unidentified vessels, which respond in a language later found to be High Covenant Basic. News of the event reaches the general public shortly afterwards. The federal government waits to see whether its new neighbors will prove friendly or not.
    • The High Covenant introduces itself to humanity in a very nationalist and proselytic manner. It proposes that Vangelia joins its domain in exchange for numerous benefits. President Kiltas says no, but offers Vangelia's uninhabited outskirts as compensation.
    • The High Covenant government sends Kiltas a covert message denying his alternative and insisting on the annexation of Vangelia. He continues to reject the High Covenant's demands and states that if it attempted to invade Vangelia, his country was strong enough to push it back.
    • The High Covenant's final message to President Kiltas is that it would be "experimenting with Vangelia's military capacity very soon," which he correctly views as an euphemism for war. He declares a state of emergency and orders the VDF to mobilize around the High Covenant border.
    • The High Covenant increases its military presence near the Vangelian border.

High Covenant Invasion

  • 7,805 CE:
    • High Covenant warships cross the border with Vangelia and attack numerous space settlements.
    • In a speech, President Kiltas not only announces his failure to negotiate peace with the High Covenant, but also declares war on the latter and implements conscription for all humans of suitable age and health.
    • The navies of the High Covenant and Vangelia fight one another for the first time in the the Sarnos System, a minor planetary system in the Toltanna Region. The battle ends in Vangelian retreat.
  • 7,806 CE: The Battle of Pandilla begins when the High Covenant, looking to capture the strategically valuable planet Coria, sends its entire 11th Fleet to the Pandilla System. The 7th and 3rd Vangelian fleets, respectively commanded by vice admirals Martina Neidrels and Devi Briega, engage it, but the 3rd Fleet is quickly destroyed and the 7th is pushed to low Corian orbit. For hours on end, the 11th and 7th exchange laser fire, losing most of their ships in the process. The 7th eventually outnumbers the 11th and forces it to retreat, spelling pyrrhic Vangelian victory.
  • 7,807 CE:
    • Vangelia and the High Covenant sign the Treaty of Agemound. It guarantees Vangelian independence under the condition of the human nation-state thoroughly disarming itself and handing some of its territories over to the High Covenant.
