Overview
The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, United States of New-America, US, USA, or America) is a federalist republic and the most economically dominant nation within the Alpha Centauri System. While maintaining numerous colonial holdings throughout the system's various worlds, its central authority is primarily based on the fourth-largest continent of planet New America; Vesperium, over which it maintains near-exclusive hegemony. The United States of America often sits as planet New America's head in the Centauri Eminence.
Historically, prior to the exodus from the Sol System, the United States functioned as the dominant global power on Earth and beyond, projecting influence through economic strength, technological advancement, and military superiority. Its influence was embedded in global institutions, international markets, and a vast military infrastructure spanning multiple extraterrestrial and extraplanetary installations. However, through several self-destructive events and general political corruption and an apathetic public, the nation's dominion over the world slowly began to diminish, until it nearly faced utter collapse following the rise of the Sol King.
Though threatened, the American people rallied in the face of adversity, forming a unified effort to ensure survival. This culminated in a large-scale exodus from Earth and the Sol System in 2100 AD. Four nations — the United States of America, United Mexican States, Federative Republic of Brazil, and Argentine Republic — led the most focused migration under a shared "American" identity. Upon their arrival in 2135 AD, these nations dispersed across the newly settled planet, which they named "New America."
As of 2500 AD, the United States of America remains extant, though its current form bears little internal or structural resemblance to its original incarnation. Despite centuries of upheaval, adaptation, and transformation, the USA endures as both humanity's oldest surviving republic and its most ancient continuously operating nation-state. Among the last of the Pre-Exodus polities still functioning, it stands as a relic of Old Earth, retaining institutional continuity and national identity long after most of its contemporaries have dissolved or been absorbed into newer national identities and entities.
This continued existence has not been without significant upheaval and hardship in the centuries following the Exodus. Both domestic and foreign opposition arose in response to key government actions, most notably the admittance of Mexico as a "Coequal and Long-Awaited Composite Nation" within the Union in 2,235 AD. This decision catalyzed a series of escalating tensions that culminated in the Constitutional War, the secession and formation of the rival exclave known as the True American Republic, and the eventual loss of control over the planet's largest island of South Vesperium.
The United States frequently engages in conflict with its principal rival on New America and within the wider Alpha Centauri System: the Collective Republics of Tanah Baru, the third largest planetary nation of New America, and successor state to the Indonesian national identity. The two powers have alternated as the system's dominant force over the decades, each vying for political, economic, and territorial supremacy. The most significant of these confrontations was the so called "Centauric Wars," a series of the deadliest conflicts faced by Centauri-Humanity since the rise of the Sol King. Beginning in 2400 AD, these wars engulfed the entire star system in open warfare, the result of long-standing intrasystem grievances erupting into full-scale bloodshed.
