Homeland Syndicate & Conditor's Crossbow

Holder: Rhoxane Cuphea

Organization: The Cooperative (Homeland Syndicate)

The holder of the crossbow is an unelected official tasked with maintaining certain customs within Yurette and surrounding territory. Everyone here is fully in support of the cause right? They lead the “Homeland Syndicate,” a black operation that answers to the chairman (holder of the shield). There is a lot of friction between the Syndicate and the Cooperative, so after insurrection during the All Rules War, the leader is constantly moved around (immediately banished to a remote outpost once their term is up). This does not make them immune to corruption or anything, but it makes them a little better.

Members of the Syndicate hold single-use concealed “crossbows” (tension powered) on various points in their body as well as a main one usually on their back. The side-arm is usually a dagger. Their uniform is required to stand out, thus making it dark grey with red and pink accents. If you get a knock on your door at 2AM, be careful. A friendly talk back at the station (that you don’t know where it is) is the minimum. They’re the closest thing to cops in Yurette and people generally distrust them (of course). They aren’t all bad though; they work closely with other organizations against insidious anti-socialist behavior. They often butt heads with the Oreads and Free Army of Northern Zazriel (in particular the Covert Operations Trust)

The Crossbow is honestly not even that good. Its projectiles are immune to air-resistance and wind, but that won’t make an unskilled marksman any good. The leader often personally visits larger operations (to knee-cap them and make time management infinitely harder)

Zazriel Res Publica

A stateless society, perhaps one that is also without class, and, without knowing any better, maybe even a moneyless one. Has true communism emerged on Haven? No, it hasn’t. At best, the ZRP is a “guild socialist” society. Emerging from the ashes of quite possibly the worst capitalist state in history, the ZRP has the trauma of this former system in its DNA. The people of the Res Publica organize themselves into democratically-run guilds. There are a number of rules, rules enforced by the closest thing to a law that exists, “The Zazriel Charter.” Each guild, of which there are many, must be owned and operated by its workers. An individual can only be in one guild at a time. Anyone can join or leave any guild at any time for any reason. The last of the rules is very controversial, but its intention was to maintain the freedom of movement for workers. Most guilds have agreed to a “Super-Charter” system which includes: A contract signed in blood must be recognized by all guilds. Contracts cannot be signed under duress, but they can be signed on behalf of another. All contracts must be stored in The Commons. Copies of them are freely available to view at The Commons library. Satellite libraries exist in Yoatte and Kiinette. The Cooperative will manage the contracts, but enforcement is up to the signers. Guilds mostly handle the contracts, whereas workers can simply invoke the name of their guild to make agreements. For example, the promise of “An ice cold beer” can be fulfilled with “a couple radishes,” but this system works best in small towns. In large cities, where a worker doesn’t produce anything tangible of value or where keeping track of all the promises gets hard, guilds issue tokens that represent all kinds of thing including meals, days off, and other basic things. Sometimes, these tokens accumulate in places so, in the interest of keeping the economy flowing, workers at the guild get these tokens to exchange with others. Most guilds store their own contracts for who works for them. Copies exist in the major libraries. Violating these contracts is not very good, of course. So what motivates a guild to do well? The same thing that motivates a politician in power. If they can get the guild to do well, they obviously benefit in that they get to keep their great job, maintain respect from their coworkers, and all the other benefits conferred to leadership (plus a few under the table perks that invariably exist)

Conditor's Monacle and the Oreads

The Oreads are a fairly large group of magically-sensitive individuals (mostly women) whose abilities are immensely varied. Through a process called “Pneuma Condensation,” the “pneuma,” that is the animating force of life, can be made physical. For most people, in particular those who are not magically sensitive, this process yields amorphous forms. For those whose minds are heavily laden with mana, that is, those who are magically sensitive, a clear form can be derived. A certain number have highly weaponizable or useful pneuma; these people enter the Oreads. Pneuma are diverse, but generally involve the crystallization of the “Skene,” deriving from the word for the backdrop in a play. This can be thought of as the stage on which all thoughts take place. Large-scale experiments in which many undergo Pneuma Condensation have revealed that most common manifestation is sudden unconsciousness. Following this are: The individual becoming magnetic Vibration and Heat Production Sudden onset extreme hunger, thirst, or lust Spirit-Sensing (During Pneuma Condensation only) Seizure Spiritual Experience A “Nynform” (i.e. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, or Metal) Telepathic disturbance (i.e. emotional event for both the individual and everyone present). While some of the above abilities are useful, the are often low-power. People who qualify for the Oreads look for exceptional abilities first and find uses for them later. Bulky testing lenses, which are glasses that cause Pneuma Condensation in those both wearing and seeing through them, are usually used on individuals shortly after becoming adults in areas where the Oreads have significant influence. The much more sleek, durable, and lightweight combat spectacles are the main weapon. While dangerous to keep on all the time, they are always worn during combat. The Oreads spent a great deal of time developing a quick-deploy uniform worn under normal clothes. Upon Pneuma Condensation, the small burst of mana that accompanies it fuels these clothes into expanding to the proper uniform. Below are some notable members: Demeter Aquilegia: Momentum increases dramatically, leading to high-energy impacts but has a very hard time changing direction (remember, this corresponds to someone’s fundamental being or “Skene”) Sappho Involucrata: Becomes virtually indestructible as energy directed toward her is instead absorbed. When her Pneuma dissipates, the energy is released all at once (So I don’t forget, she hides her feelings well) Eumelia Tomentosa: Current General Secretary of the Oreads. She insists on fighting on the front lines. Her Pneuma manifests as a shadowy copy of herself always acting in her peripheral vision. She is the only Oread to sport a monocle over a pair of glasses despite not being the only one to have only one eye.
