1st January, 2494. The flagship of the United Planetary Factions' science and exploration wing, the SOPF Triumph, drifts through an endless void; at the very limit of the Solar System, eight months from civilization at full pelt, three days at light speed. Its mission, to investigate the outpost ICO Penrose, perched on the edge of a small, primordial black hole that fell into the Solar System billions of years ago. The outpost on its typical schedule returns regular communications to Jupiter and the rest of the Factions. Beginning eight months ago, it would fall into near-silence, sending mere blips as part of an automated routine. With time, the blips would fade into the background noise. The crew of the Triumph: decorated captain Basin, commander White, navigator Juno, R&D head Tyson, thirty officers, and forty scientists enlisted to help serve the Triumph as a replacement for the Penrose should it not be found.
