Dense clouds obscured the shimmering stars over at the Eyros, a lonely radio observatory on Twilight. In the distance, swarms of fireflies scarcely illuminated the rolling hills in a faint crimson, a welcoming respite against the suffocating darkness. The subtle silhouettes of the satellite dishes loomed over the inky trees and shrubs as black as the night. Civilization was far, far away, and the only connection to the rest of the world was through radio. That, and the occasional supplies plane.

"Well, nothing to do now but to rest and enjoy the silence," Syos Athiel, the site's lone operator, quietly muttered to himself.

It had been, by all respects, a dull night. Syos had just returned from satellite dish seven after performing routine maintenance. Keeping the site in meticulous order was of utmost importance, and that included looking over every dish, every solar panel, and every other piece of technology present.

Just as he sat in his chair, an unusual signal caught his eye. The towering satellite dishes in the distance began to turn in unison, together pointing to the tiny point in the endless abyss. Once the signal had been received, he began processing it, hoping to understand its origin. The background noise filtered away, it became clear.

A voice could be heard. A voice that felt strangely unnatural. Almost as if it was trying to mimic speech. The voice repeated over and over.

THE ABYSS GAZES. SHE CRIES OUT IN CONCORDANT AGONY. HER HEART BEATS IN SILENT HARMONY. HEED.

Transcribed here are recovered audio logs of Isaac Velith, a researcher at Sellis Station on Luia during the year of 7618, reciting the hardships of the planet's deadliest storm...

A mechanical whirr is heard before the voice would come through. Faint wind can be noticed in the background...

"Well, this is it. Sellis Station, Luia, the frontier of the galaxy. It's a strange sense of solitude out here that I can't exactly put into words. I've seen my fair share of the universe, but here? There are around eight thousand people on this rock, only a couple of cities on Sirona, and that's it for over a thousand light-years. Just the crushing desolation of space. And beyond this outpost lie landscapes that have never been seen by anyone, ever."

"That said, it's invigorating to be on solid ground again. Despite the endless advances of space travel, you simply can't replace the comfort of an endless horizon in the distance and a vast sky looming over you. On our way, we had to make a quick stop at a station above Sirona. Placed named Hos. Just a routine security check, you know the drill. Out here, there's no reliable protection, so everyone's a bit paranoid."

"But, whatever anxiety I may have had was soothed by the beauty of Sirona and her lunar siblings. I can't quite put the beauty of the cosmos into words. It's ethereal, ancient. And in the corner, I noticed Bloom, its radiant violet a striking contrast against the blackness of space. I would've loved to stay out there for longer, but the sunset here is just as breathtaking. I can even see Sirona in the distance, a tiny dot in the sky near the suns."

"The wind appears to be picking up; I should probably head inside. But I think I'll stay just a second longer and enjoy the sights. Signing off."

Universal Date: 06.28.7618 | Universal Time: 23:47 | Local Time: 7:24

The recorder picks up several unintelligible voices in the background...

"The weather report arrived. There appears to be a vast cyclone, and Sellin Station appears to be directly in its path. We've brought all the equipment inside and hunkered down.

"It's happened! We drilled deep into the ice and unearthed the vast subglacial lake right next to our outpost. I've barely had any free time, so I'll try to keep it short. We sent an unmanned submersible down there and recovered samples of the liquid ammonia. Upon closer examination, we came upon ancient microbes that have evolved independently from life elsewhere on Luia. They've been in total isolation for hundreds of thousands of years. As expected, there's no signs of anything with more than one cell. Maybe there hasn't"

Several days later. Insane windspeeds. Much colder outside. Suns too occluded for solar power. Debris from the nearby communication tower breached living quarters, had to patch it up. Over ten people died, more wounded. Medical support hard to come by, several succumb to wounds later on.

Mentions of lost communications a day into the storms, ship unable to find outpost. Too stormy to land, but could theoretically do in emergency.

Isaac never lived to see the sunrise.

Simulations

  • In standard creation protocol, each one expands as fast as ours. Thus the same size in same time
  • Not every simulation is as grand as ours though
  • Cosmology in every one is the same
  • Time in them is faster than in real world
  • Time in them is related to how much there is to simulate. More stuff, slower. But anything past age of starlight is instant
