Vangelia

Scope: The Lone Horizon
From Amaranth Legacy, available at amaranth-legacy.community

Onwards, Workers of Mother Earth!
This content takes place in the Vangelia setting of The Lone Horizon.

Workers are the backbone of every society—they provide it with culture, education, food, security, and technology. The adoption of socialism means workers are recognized for their incalculable efforts and are subsequently motivated to give everyone their best work. What they had to endure before the revolution was nothing short of a travesty, and let us hope it stays in the past.
—Teid Castilion, 1st President of the Federation of Vangelia

Vangelia (pronounced /vand͡ʒɛlia/), officially the Federation of Vangelia, is a country spanning the medial half of the Orion Arm. It borders the Commune of Tiarem spinward and the High Covenant's rump states coreward. Its executive capital is Earth and its legislative capital is Boreas. The majority of its population is neohuman, with other sapient species making up a sizable minority.

The Union of Vangelia was the precursor to the Federation. The Unity and Progress Party (UPP) was its sole legal party, as it had also been in the Martian Republic. It enforced liberalism and human nationalism, to the detriment of both the working class and Crostilvu immigrants. Near the end of the 6th millennium CE, Teid Castilion founded the Federalist Alliance, a big tent of Vangelian leftist organizations. In partnership with the Crostilvu states, he ignited the Vangelian Revolution, birthing the Federation in 6,000 CE. The billions of human and Crostilvu deaths required a peace treaty between the two species on Msarah.

After the adoption of its first constitution in 6,008 CE, Vangelia declared itself a socialist state. Corruption stemming from its multi-party system impaired the recovery of many worlds from capitalist exploitation, however. When elected, the Socialist Party of Vangelia (SPV) was the only one to tackle the issue through its highly fruitful anti-corruption campaigns. Its unyielding dedication to the proletarian allowed it to amass the largest membership of any Vangelian party and weather serious threats from rival parties. Gradually, they had no choice but to be absorbed into the SPV, turning Vangelia into a one-party state yet again by 6,435 CE. The abandonment of Castilionism precipitated a move towards centralized economic planning over market mechanisms, further equalizing development.

In 7,118 CE, Vangelia backed a socialist revolution in its neighbor, the Republic of Tiarem. The event forced the country's ruling families into exile and placed political power in the hands of the workers, converting it into the Commune of Tiarem. While relations with Vangelia deepened, opinion towards the Clan Assembly soured, the same sentiment spreading to humanity. Earth and Marist severed diplomatic ties in 7,124 CE, provoking a mass exodus of Crostilvu from Vangelia to the Clan Assembly. For a thousand years, the two countries had a mutually beneficial friendship, though their ideological differences inevitably proved too stark to ignore.

The High Covenant came into contact with Vangelia in 7,805 CE. It insisted on annexing and proselytizing the latter before moving to threats of war as Vangelia refused to lend its sovereignty to a state it knew nothing about. The following year, High Covenant warships attacked settlements across the Vangelian border. The invasion dragged on until the signing of the Treaty of Agemound in 7,807 CE. Despite accounting for a disproportionate amount of the casualties, Vangelia was obliged to demilitarize and cede some of its territories to the High Covenant. The outbreak of the High Covenant Civil War allowed the Federation to violate the unfair treaty. Even then, it has had to take in millions of Raggatun and Kurnai refugees, their hostilities forcing segregation inside Vangelian camps.

The Vangelian economy is thoroughly socialized. The populace exercises ownership of the means of production via directly elected councils (soviets). It is currently transitioning towards communism, having already done away with classes, money, and unequal resource distribution. The withering away of the state is the last remaining step to the full communization of Vangelia. All progress made so far has eradicated problems like disease, hunger, illiteracy, and poverty, yielding exceedingly high living standards.

Demographics

Vangelia has a sapient population of 93.4 billion, 96% of which is neohuman. The remaining 4% consists of other sapients, their presence in the country being slightly over a thousand years old. The Crostilvu were the first to visit and become citizens of Vangelia. The second were the Raggatun and Kurnai, who arrived as refugees from the High Covenant Civil War. The three species receive de facto equal treatment, but the Raggatun, due to their association with the High Covenant, may be prejudiced against by humans and Kurnai in social situations.

Trivia

  • The basic concept of Vangelia is a human nation-state. It changed three times during The Lone Horizon's development:
    • Its first iteration was a large multispecies federation. It spanned one fifth of the Milky Way and had multiple extragalactic territories. It was named the Terran Protectorate before switching to Terran Communion.
    • The second iteration, called the Terran Republic, was very small relative to the Milky Way and still had a multispecies population. As similar as it may have been to Vangelia, it was far younger, at roughly 800 years old.
    • The third and current iteration initially bore the name Cassandria, honoring the first human of the Borealis Universe to step on an exoplanet, Cassandra Goodman. Because a Lone Horizon version of Cassandra was never written, she stopped being the namesake, the original character Karl Vangel taking over that role.
