Each Ekrosian Guardian has a thirteen-pointed star symbol somewhere on its surface. The Guardians which contain biological material all contain identical genetic material despite having wildly different appearances and biologies. They are often hostile to foreign craft, with the largest among them making travel to certain areas impossible. They vary in size from the scale of microbial life to the scale of megastructures, with a handful measuring at several light years in length. They rarely venture into the galaxy itself. Among them, only a handful exhibit true sapience. |

Their large number makes entering Via Aylathiya fairly difficult, especially near regions known as "the galactic poles" on the "north" and "south" ends of the galaxy. These poles exactly correlate with the poles of the planet Ekros, hence their name. It is unclear how these beings came to be. Based on several interviews, physical evidence, and documents, various researchers have concluded that they were created by an individual named "Eve." Every Guardian presumably has the genetic material of Eve within them. |

What is known is that they exhibit insect-like cooperation levels. One on its own, while dangerous, is not capable of leaving the planet it is on or self-replicating. Instead, it takes large numbers of these machines working in tandem to build the ships and factories needed for the beings to self-replicate. Several "specimens" of Guardians have been captured. However, they stop functioning whenever they "know" they have been captured. The mechanism behind this is unknown. Even so, the physical attributes of the machines have been thoroughly studied. Much like communal insects, such as termites or ants, they seem to have a Queen. The various civilizations of the Carina Galaxy have different names for the Queen as well as many of the researchers studying the Guardians. The most common name given to the Queen (among researchers) is "Eden." The Queen is most likely sapient. |

Ekrosian Guardians manifest between approximately 100,000 and 175,000 light years from the center of Via Aylathiya. In this region of space, there are, on average, over thirty thousand Ekrosian Guardians per cubic light-year. Recent estimates place the number of Ekrosian Guardians to be roughly 1.4 quintillion individuals. The manifestation of the Guardians seems to strictly obey the law of the conservation of mass and energy. Guardians manifest via the rearrangement of cosmic dust into the form they are to take. In other words, intergalactic dust and gas will spontaneously shape itself into one of these Guardians. Artificial Constructs do not seem to be affected. |
|||
Throughout their history, they have rarely left their galaxy. When they did live their galaxy, they went on sprees of destruction likely causing many fledgling civilizations to fall. The reasons for this is unknown, however, these "Crusades" as they are commonly called usually happen whenever important events are about to occur. For instance, the first modern crusade happened during the War of the Decamillennial Transition. Other crusades are predicted to have happened about fifty thousand years apart. There is no evidence suggesting another crusade will occur soon, however, the first modern crusade happened without warning. It is unknown if crusades can be predicted. |
|||
After "death" the Guardians will demanifest. Upon demanifestation, they will decay into the cosmic dust and gas that once made them up. A small amount of the mass will be converted into visible light. The largest demanifestations have been mistaken for events such as novae. |

While it is unknown when they first came to be, there are numerous historical accounts of these beings. Documents surviving from the Proto-Empyrean (a nation that once controlled a large portion of the Milky Way) describe what are presumably the guardians as this:<blockquote>"In a small galaxy called 'Acquiescence' there lies a [data corrupted] Losing many ships to these beings, we have decided not to waste time in this galaxy until our enemies are subjugated. There are simply too many of them, far too many of them. Were they a rival civilization then perhaps we could convert them. However, they are more akin to a force of nature than a civilization. Perhaps [data corrupted]"</blockquote>Other civilizations regarded them in similar ways. The Guardians are never portrayed as threats, presumably because they rarely leave their galaxy. Instead, they are always called "nuisances," making the Carina Dwarf Galaxy simple not worth the effort it was to conquer it. |

The First Encounter happened in 19845 as Dotsk colonists tried to leave the Lactean Confederacy and set up their own nation. They decided to colonize the Carina Galaxy since there were no known nations there. When they finally got to the galaxy, it seemed to be occupied. All across it, they detected quadrillions of what appeared to be probes. After failing to contact them, the colonists merely settled down in an area of the galaxy sparsely populated by these probes and did their best to ignore them. |

These glass orbs were only recently confirmed to be guardians when one was cracked causing the churning substance to crystalize into patterns not unlike the Ekrosian Star symbol. |

Later, in 19899, a large number of guardians approached the colony. They ignored signals telling them to stop, ignored the exceedingly obvious weapons systems that were trained on them, and even ignored the warning shots fired. The moment one of them was hit, every single one of them in the galaxy suddenly started converging on their location. The colonists attempted to flee, but any ships leaving the galaxy were terminated. Billions of ships ended up swarming the colony, however, they never fired a single shot of their own. They simply rammed into the colonists' ships. The colony was stuck on the planets and isolated from each other. To this day, the Guardians frustrate any attempts of these colonists from leaving the handful of systems they colonized. |

The military of the LaC would have intervened to allow the colonists escape were it not for the looming war of the Decamillennial Transition. The Ekrosian Guardians
The Ekrosian Guardians are a phenomenon in which large numbers of lifeforms, cybernetic organisms, or other entities spontaneously manifest in the intergalactic space surrounding Via Aylathiya galaxy.
Manifestation
After "death" the Guardians will demanifest. Upon demanifestation, they will decay into the cosmic dust and gas that once made them up. A small amount of the mass will be converted into visible light. The largest demanifestations have been mistaken for events such as novae.

Microscopic Scale
The most common of the Ekrosian Guardians exist on the level of single-celled organisms. Ekrosian Guardians are usually no smaller than several micrometers across. They were only discovered to exist recently, as the detection of microscopic particles in the intergalactic medium is a difficult task. Many of the Guardians at this scale seem to be protozoa-like organisms bearing the thirteen-pointed symbol. They are capable of expelling small amounts of gas to propel themselves, although to where is unknown. Most are capable of photosynthesis. Those which cannot often die within hours. They are not capable of reproduction.
On the microscopic scale, inorganic material makeup is much more common. Apart from the common protozoan forms there are many variants. Small-scale models of engines are common, ranging in sophistication from primitive steam and internal combustion engines to warp drives. These engines often function and demanifest upon running out of fuel. Small scale figurines of a humanoid figure, small-scale models of the most recent spacecraft to pass through the area, and what appear to be zygotes of an unknown species are common as well. One-dimensional points of light often manifest in the same ways as Guardians do. The way they flicker likely codes for the symbol in some kind of analog system.
Small Scale
Small Scale Ekrosian Guardians range in size from one tenth of a millimeter to one meter in length. These guardians are the second most common size. In many cases, the small scale Guardians manifest as a random assembly of cells. While most random assemblies of cells fail to produce a viable organism and quickly die, many manage to form viable organisms capable of surviving in space for extended periods of time. These organisms usually move through space by creating small warp bubbles. In addition to the Ekrosian Star symbol, other symbols are etched across the organisms. These symbols are likely runes allowing for the organisms to take advantage of Thaumaturgy despite not being sapient. Small Scale Guardians are almost universally incapable of moving faster than the speed of light.
In addition to these small organisms exist a class of guardians that seem to be entirely inanimate. Glass orbs filled with a glowing substance churning within move through space at ultrarelativistic speeds. These glass orbs were only recently confirmed to be guardians when one was cracked causing the churning substance to crystalize into patterns not unlike the Ekrosian Star symbol.
