Template:Species TemplateThe Un'oit are the native inhabitants of Torlak and are the dominant members of the Un'oit Collective.
Physical Description
Despite being vaguely both reptilian and octopodal in appearance to human eyes, the Un’oit are not cold-blooded. They were initially described by humans who saw them as, “…armored octopi with reptilian eyes and scales.” They can “walk” on their ten various armored tentacles as well as use them to swim. These tentacles are controlled by a large armored octopod-like head which holds five eyes which are capable of seeing not only visual range of colors but also are capable of seeing infrared. These eyes are spread across the head so the Un’oit can see in every direction.
The Un’oit are mostly carnivorous but can sustain themselves on plants if the need ever arises. They eat through a large circular mouth located underneath their head. This mouth is covered with around three rows of sharp incisor-like teeth with which the Un’oit can tear through some of the tougher prey on their planet.
They speak through the use of four mouths, each located between their eyes. They use all four of their mouths to speak, as their native language has varying layers of subtly which can be missed if one of the mouths does not speak.
The Un’oit have two biological sexes, male and female. Both are nearly indistinguishable save for the females having a slightly thicker skill which protects their heads.
The baseline Un’oit are capable of surviving underwater for an entire local day before needing to resurface for air. However, as of 100,000 CE, various genetic alterations have been made to allow for the Un’oit to be able to utilize gill-like attachments to be able to live within their planetary oceans as well as the oceans of their colony worlds.
A baseline Un’oit is capable of living for only seventy or so standard years but due to their rapid maturation rate children grow into fully mature adults within a local year.
One interesting biological defense mechanism is that when in danger, an Un’oit can release an acidic liquid from some of its pores into an enemy’s face. This causes disorientation, paralysis and death in its victims depending on the amount released. This liquid could be mixed with a variety of plants which could be used for ink.
History
The first Un’oit are thought to have started to evolve around the year 2000 CE in the deep dark blue oceans of Torlak’s largest ocean before eventually beginning to migrate to the largest continent to escape the larger prey that lived in the oceans at the time. When they were discovered by humans over two thousand years later, the Un’oit were on the verge of evolving true sapience so the Thulcandran Federation left the planet and various other possible colony worlds around the planet within a five hundred light year radius alone.
In 75121 CE the Un’oit began to create the first society around one of the northern inland oceans on the main continent. This became known as the Yav Civilization and was a monarchal equivalent, with the small first nation being ruled by a king who had a small harem of many consorts. This civilization lasted for over a thousand years before a rivaling civilization known as the Ino invaded and destroyed the Yav.
During this time, the beginnings of religion had begun to spread across Torlak, known as Yav’iina or the worship of Yav. The Yav became to be known as gods and goddesses among the people and many myths and legends began to spread across the various civilizations that spread across the planet.
As the Un'oit continued to spread across their planet their religious beliefs only deepened and, unlike most other civilizations, Yav’iina remained their only religion. There were various but slight differences in doctrine among the worshippers but the main belief system remained more or less the same.
By 98912 the Un'oit had surprisingly united into one world government, the ancestor to the Collective. They developed technology to visit Torlak’s major moon Olki and in 99023 they had established a base on the moon. From there, they began to explore other worlds in their star system and discovered the subglacial life on Wyndr. They used the non-sapient life on Wyndr as a fresh source of food.
In 99352 CE, the Un’oit developed Warp technology and with easier access to Wyndr, the population exploded and this prompted the Un’oit to construct exploratory vessels in order to leave their star system in search of other worlds which could be settled.
Ten years later, the Thulcandran Federation made first contact with the Un’oit. Until this time, the Un’oit believed that they were the only form of sapient life in the universe but when they encountered the Federation, it caused a crisis of belief among their population. The colony which the Federation contacted and their Dendron (the religious leader) declared that the humans who had contacted them were heretics and not true life forms like the Un’oit were. The Federation representatives were quickly met with violence and were forced off the planet when it was revealed that the Federation had been keeping tabs on the Un’oit civilization.
Upon this revelation, the Un’oit began to quickly expand their growing influence on the local sector. Any planet they discovered with sapient life they quickly enslaved and brought them “Into the fold”, as the Un’oit called it. By 99861 CE, the Un’oit occupied many different worlds and has settled more. They controlled an area of space around seven hundred cubic light-years in area.
The next encounter with the Federation was when the Un’oit constructed Von Neumann probes to destroy three minor Federation colony worlds and five research stations in a surprise attack. This resulted in the Collective-Federation Wars which lasted from 99969-99996 CE.
Upon the Federation victory and the establishment of the Torlak Accords, the Un’oit remained in their space until the Fleet of Worlds departed. During this time, the Un’oit claimed the former Thulcandran Federation space as their own, settling worlds the Federation had left behind.
The Un’oit continued to expand until they encountered the UFSS which surrounded their space. A war nearly broke out but by this time the Un’oit had begun to fall away from their religious beliefs and began freeing many of their slave races. In 99999 CE, the Un’oit petitioned for entry into the Confederacy of Borealis as a member nation. Ten years later the Un’oit became member citizens of the Confederacy and have been prominent members since.
