"And to those with an adventurous nature, this is your chance! Your chance to make your mark on the world! Your chance to go down in history! Your chance to become a legend! So get out there, find my lost treasures, and earn your place as the greatest treasure hunter the world has ever seen!"
—Excerpt from Elwood “Seabane” Rackham’s message to the world

The Seven Treasures of Seabane are a set of powerful magical items once wielded by Elwood “Seabane” Rackham, said to be the most infamous pirate in all of Haven’s history. After discovering the first treasure in a cave near his hometown as a child, Rackham would eventually go on to discover the remaining treasures and use them to rise to the top of the pirate world. After retiring from piracy, Rackham would scatter the treasures all over the world and send a message claiming that whoever found the treasures would be granted access to his secret vault, which he stashed full of arcane relics looted from all over the world. Once the message got out, pirates and sailors everywhere scrambled to find Rackham’s lost treasures, leading to the beginning of the Great Seabane Hunt.

However, despite Rackham scattering the treasures over five-hundred years ago, not one of them has been found. Rumors and hearsay regarding them bounce between taverns and ports all over the world, most of it made up by some sleaze looking to fleece drunken sailors out of their money. But despite all the false sightings and fake stories, the promise of an entire vault of immensely powerful artifacts means that almost every sailor has tried at least once to find one of the Seven Treasures.

History

A Childhood Discovery (2533 YM)

As a child, Elwood Rackham loved to scavenge the beach near his village for anything of value. Pretty seashells, old coins, even chunks of amber were all collected and stashed away in his trusty bag to be sold off later. One day, the nine-year-old Rackham’s latest beachcombing expedition had taken him further away than he had ever been from his village, leading him to the mouth of a cave overlooking the coast. His knees quaked as he approached, but he pressed on, hoping to find something valuable within. Rackham searched the cave for hours, but all he managed to find were old bones and broken shells. But just when Rackham was about to give up, he spotted a glint of light coming from a crack within the cavern walls. Upon approaching the crack, Rackham noticed that the wall was composed of loosely stacked stones, which he tore down as his excitement peaked at hopefully discovering something worthwhile.

Tearing down the wall, Rackham discovered a hidden tunnel that led to a secret chamber where he discovered something chilling. In the center of the chamber sat a skeleton, clad in a greatcoat with tattered trousers and a decaying tricorn hat. Beside him were two small chests filled with coins and precious stones, but what intrigued Rackham the most was the blade clutched in the skeleton’s grip, one that glowed with a soft blue light through its scabbard. He stuffed his bag to the brim, though he kept the sword hidden away. After returning home, his parents were elated, the treasures their son had retrieved allowing them to buy a local fishing business. The considerable wealth it brought in allowed the family to live comfortable lives, but Rackham wasn’t content with simply inheriting the new business when his time came.

Rackham the Captain (2544 YM)

When Elwood was twenty, he made it clear to his parents that he did not want to inherit the fishing business, stating his intent to sail the high seas. As such, he left home, taking the enchanted cutlass with him and heading for the nearest port city. After arriving at Old Hook Bay, Rackham scouted the taverns for any crews looking for employment, eventually signing on with a privateer crew in service to the Westland Empire. After impressing the captain with his sword, he was taken in, setting off the day after to hunt down other pirates that had been harassing imperial shipping lanes.

Though Rackham had never actually fought with his magical cutlass before, he’d secretly practiced with the enchanted blade for years, giving him a good degree of control over its power. He proved popular with the crew, eventually spearheading attacks onto other ships on his own. However, this earned him the envy of his captain, who began to see him as a potential threat to his authority. As such, the captain had his most trusted crewmates ambush Rackham during the night, though this attempt failed and the would-be murderers were hacked to pieces.

Enraged, the captain decided he would put Rackham down himself. However, Rackham convinced the rest of the crew to be on his side, throwing the old captain overboard and having himself installed as the new one. Under his leadership, the privateers brought down several rival crews, but their fates would change one day when they discovered a peculiar map aboard an enemy’s ship.

A Grand Adventure (2544 YM - 2547 YM)

Examining the map, Rackham discovered that it contained directions to seven supposedly mythical treasures scattered across the seas, with his cutlass, the Blade of Roaring Waves, being one of them. The map claimed that whoever found the treasures would become the greatest pirate to ever live, an opportunity Rackham knew he couldn’t miss. As such, he took his crew out on a grand, three-year adventure across the entire ocean, tracking down the treasures until at last, all seven were obtained. Rackham’s exploits during this time were legendary, earning him the name “Captain Seabane”, scourge of the seas.

Rackham would continue his career for the next forty years, always staying one step ahead of the law and racking up one of the largest bounties in Haven’s history. However, with all mortals, he eventually felt his old age catching up to him, and as such decided to retire. He gave each of his crew enough gold to last them a lifetime, stashing the rest in a hidden, rune-locked vault along with all the artifacts he’d looted over the years. But before finally disappearing for good, he sent out a message that shook the pirate world to its core.

The Great Seabane Hunt (2587 YM - Modern Day)

Seabane stated that he had scattered the seven treasures all over the world, and that whoever found all of them would unlock the way to his secret vault. Mere days after the message was sent out, hundreds, maybe thousands of ships were launched in an effort to find Seabane’s lost treasures. While many believed that Seabane was simply lying, it was already too late. The Great Seabane Hunt had begun.

But despite the combined efforts of tens of thousands of treasure hunters, not one of the treasures has been found. Some claim that they lie somewhere deep under the ocean, others on some hidden island. However, most believe that Seabane made it so that the treasures are constantly on the move via a network of trusted agents. Regardless of their location, some sailors spend their entire lives searching for the treasures, the promise of power having a firm grip on their souls.

The Treasures

Below is a list of the Seven Treasures and their abilities.

Blade of Roaring Waves

The Blade of Roaring Waves is an ancient cutlass fitted with powerful runes of water magic. With these runes, the blade’s wielder is able to call upon the force of the sea itself to empower their strikes, unleashing great arcs of water with every slash. Additionally, the wielder is capable of temporarily enlarging the blade using water, allowing them to slice clean through dozens of foes at once. However, this ability only works when the user is near a large enough quantity of water.

Seabane used the blade as his weapon of choice throughout his entire career, using it to slay rival pirates, naval captains, and sea beasts alike. While he collected many enchanted weapons during his travels, the Blade of Roaring Waves was always his first choice. It had become an extension of himself, a symbol of his infamy. To this day, when sailors spot crashing waves on the horizon, they often remark that Seabane must be behind them.

Manalock Pistol

The Manalock Pistol is an ornate mahogany flintlock lined with golden engravings. The pistol’s unique firing system charges its shots with magical energy, allowing them to pierce most types of armor with ease. The pistol’s barrel is also engraved with runes of seeking that, when invoked, will guide the bullets straight to an enemy’s weak spot, such as the eyes or the joints in their armor.

Seabane used this pistol as his signature sidearm, greatly appreciating its ability to single out important targets. One instance saw him sneaking into a hidden pirate fortress where several captains had joined forces to plot his downfall. One by one, the captains were picked off as bullets pierced their skulls at seemingly improbable angles. Once all the captains were dead, their crews descended into infighting and anarchy, allowing Seabane and his crew to rob them with almost no resistance.

Spyglass of Clearest Vision

The Spyglass of Clearest Vision is a spyglass with lenses rumored to be crafted from the eyes of an Aquelian Serpent. It provides the user with a much clearer view at greater distances than an ordinary spyglass ever could. It also lets the user see things at night as clear as they would during the day, pierce through obstructions like fog, and even see through solid objects. However, certain materials are unable to be seen through, typically ones that are magically-resistant in some way.

Seabane primarily used the spyglass for examining ships to see if they had anything valuable worth taking. Additionally, he also famously used the spyglass in an underwater expedition to locate a sunken city belonging to a long-lost culture, peering through the depths to find it. More importantly, it allowed Seabane to spot the Kraken that had made the ancient city its home, ordering his men to drop depth charges right on top of it. Once the Kraken woke, it attempted to reach out and grab Seabane’s ship, only to come face to face with dozens of charges exploding at once, blasting it to pieces while Seabane’s crew looted the city.

Mystical Moving Map of Haven

The Mystical Moving map of Haven is, as the name suggests, an enchanted map that centers its location based on whoever is holding it. Should the wielder move, the image on the map will move with them. The map also lists anyone else who happens to be nearby, along with any towns or other points of interest. The image can also be enlarged or shrunken at will, allowing the user to expand their view to the point where they can see all of Haven.

Seabane and his crew used this map to avoid running into any wandering navy patrols before they drew too close, along with using it to get the drop on them. It is rumored that the map eventually ended up in possession of the denizens of Fleet-Town which, if true, could be the reason as to how the town has managed to avoid the Westland Empire’s navy for so long. However, the Fleet Council has denied any accusations of them possessing the map, though more than a few sailors have tried their luck at sneaking in to see if they’re lying.

Bottle o’ Revitalizing Rum

The Bottle o’ Revitalizing Rum is an amber bottle containing a potent magical brew that fills whoever drinks it with enough energy to keep them going for three days straight. Additionally, the rum temporarily bolsters the confidence and battle prowess of the drinker. Should the bottle run dry, all one has to do is fill it with water and the magical properties of the bottle will convert the water into rum over the course of a few days, providing a never-ending supply of this boisterous brew.

Seabane often rationed out the rum to his crew in small vials, having them drink it before every battle to ensure they had the upper hand. During a desperate engagement against a force of privateers sent to kill him, Seabane drank the entire bottle all at once, turning into a drunken whirlwind of death as limbs and viscera flew everywhere. When the remaining privateers tried to flee, they found that their ship was somehow halted. To their horror, Seabane had managed to grab their anchor and hold their ship in place, allowing his crew to board and butcher the remaining privateers.

Jar of Bellowing Winds

The Jar of Bellowing Winds is a rune-encrusted golden jar said to contain the combined power of a hundred thunderstorms. By using a dial located on the side of the jar, the wielder is able to decide how much of its power they want to use at once. However, one must be careful not to turn the dial too far, lest they unleash too much of its power at once and end up annihilating themselves.

Seabane often used the jar to put brisk winds in his ship’s sails, allowing him to stay one step ahead of navy fleets and rival pirates. He also occasionally used the jar to summon storms to destroy or hinder enemy vessels, but he usually only resorted to this as a last resort. Only once has Seabane unleashed the full power of the jar, and it was during a battle where his ship was ambushed by a force of undead led by Grand Admiral Krakynhal, leader of the Fleet of the Damned.

Seabane and his forces fought valiantly, but the undead were too numerous, slowly picking them off one by one as Krakynhal boarded their ship. The Remnant Spirit’s power was overwhelming, cutting down crewmate after crewmate until engaging in battle with Seabane himself. But just as Krakynhal was about to deal the killing blow, Seabane grabbed the Jar of Bellowing Winds and cranked the dial as hard as he could, unleashing a storm so tremendous it tore the undead fleet to splinters. Once the storm had ceased, Seabane and his remaining crew sailed to safety, utterly shaken to the bone as they vowed to only unleash the jar’s destructive power when needed.

However, Krakynhal survived the cataclysm, spending days adrift clinging to a broken mast until his minions rescued him. It was at that point that Krakynhal declared that he would hunt Seabane down and devour his soul. And although Seabane supposedly died centuries ago, Krakynhal has not forgotten that fateful day, and often sends out ships to search for the treasures to settle his grudge.

Bottomless Chest o’ Wonder

The Bottomless Chest o’ Wonder is an ornate, silver-lined wooden chest that has a seemingly endless capacity. No matter how much is poured into it, the chest never overflows, nor does it change its weight. Additionally, one may climb into the chest and stay there for as long as they please, theoretically allowing for someone to live inside of it. To exit the chest, the user must knock three times on the hatch that let them in, at which point the chest will expel them.

Seabane used the chest to store all the loot that he and his crew accumulated over the years, keeping it under heavy guard at all times to ensure it wouldn’t be taken. However, they also used the chest in more creative ways, namely stashing themselves inside of it and having an unwitting goon store it in some noble’s personal vault. Once the coast was clear, Seabane and his crew would rush out and grab everything in sight, stash it all in the chest, and leave before anyone spotted them. More than a few wealthy merchants were bankrupted in such a manner.
