Nanotechnology (also called nanotech, nanomachines, nanobots, or colloquially, nanos) is any technology consisted of large swarms of microscopic machines. This technology has a number of applications, anything from repairing damaged genes, repairing machines, weapons, harvesting resources, construction, the management of ecosystems, the removal of genetic defects, maintaining homeostasis in biological organisms, and literally hundreds of thousands of other applications. The End of Evolution
Nanotechnology seems to be developed by every advanced civilization. As such, every advanced civilization ends up staying relatively constant in their appearance.
Nanomachines flowing through the veins of an alien species constantly repair damage to DNA, tissues, and even entire organs. Things like cancers, viruses, or other pathogens are destroyed. The telomeres (if the species has such structures), are also constantly repaired. All mutations are stamped out, and all aging beyond what is coded in the DNA ceases.
This means that evolution has come to an end. The dominant species of the planet stops mutating and can theoretically live forever. Any issues caused by the repair of DNA, such as tumors, would be eliminated by the nanomachines and the DNA causing such tumors removed.
In the almost 200,000 years that the CoH has existed, for example, the only new species that existed were either discovered or created artificially. No self-aware species evolved from any already in the Confederacy.
Construction
Nanomachines are also used for the construction of very specific items. While larger machines are used for the various mega-structures in the universe, the very small machines also have their fair share of uses.
Large scale computer networks are usually built by nanomachines. It is easier to use several quadrillion nanomachines to make a server out of the random rocks that happen to be where one want's their server, than to import all of the materials. Well-designed nanomachines are easier to ship than all the raw materials as well.
