The Vaalbarans (lacertimanus iubapennati)
Ancient Vaalbarans
Summery:
The Vaalbarans are a sapient dinosaur species originating from Earth’s south pole during the Eocene Epoch they eventually left earth to create a multi-galaxy empire based on the subjugation of other species. They are descended from the small ornithopod dinosaur Morrosaurus and are herbivores. They also spread life to many galaxies but their empire ended at the hands of a formidable enemy.
Origin:
66 million years ago when the Asteroid crashed into the gulph of mexico marking the end of the Mesozoic Antarctica wasn't hit as hard, due to it being so far from the impact. Life also had already adapted here to long periods without sunlight due to the fact that the poles experience an everlasting night half the year anyway.
Due to these factors some small dinosaurs managed to survive on antarctica these dinosaur species include:
-Imperbator
-Morrosaurus
-antarctopelta
Over time during the Paleocene and Eocene these dinosaurs evolved into new forms and did quite well on Antarctica and eventually 55 million years ago a sapient species of ornithopod dinosaur evolved called the Vaalbarans (lacertimanus iubapennati). During their initial industrialisation they created a rise in global temperature that later humans would call the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum but eventually they developed cleaner forms of technology.
Eventually they took to the stars and colonized the Milky way galaxy, they created automated probes that were sent out to seed other Galaxies with life from earth (Eocene Life) including the M81 Galaxy, M82, Andromeda, M32, Triangulum and all the Galaxies in the local and M81 Groups.
However, 35 million years ago they Abandoned the Earth as the climate on their home continent of Antarctica began to get colder and ice sheets began to spread over the continent.
But their civilization continued and eventually the Vaalbarans chose to artificially uplift a animal species into a sapient form, they chose a terror bird and they created a humanoid species called the Ornithians from the base DNA of the Terror bird, these Ornithians were bird-like humanoids and were incorporated into Vaalbaran society as a subservient population of 2nd class citizens under their creators.
However tensions between the 2 species built as the Ornithians demanded to be treated as equals this eventually lead to civil war that nearly crippled the Empire so the Vaalbarans left the Galaxy to colonize others using recently evolved Homo Laureniensis as slave labor to build their empire.
The Vaalbarans settled many of the Galaxies their probes had terraformed including M81, they seeded many planets with parahumans and the Vaalbarans posed as their gods. This lasted for a few thousand years until the Vaalbarans encountered the Colonials.
The Colonials:
Colonial Origin/summery:
The colonials are a breed of nanite that started out as a medical technology created by an unknown species of alien long ago, they were designed to repair peoples bodies from the inside and keep their hosts healthy indefinitely, however at some point they gained self awareness and twisted their patients into homes for themselves and joined their broken mutated bodies together into cities and technology, they then took to the stars in their bioships (made of former people, animals and other lifeforms) and searched for more life to use as raw materials for their empire
Colonial History:
The Ancient Vaalbarans encountered them in the Black eye Galaxy (M64) around 1 million years ago, but it is unknown if this is their galaxy of origin or not. The Colonials targeted the Vaalbaran terraformed worlds in that galaxy as they were rich in biomass for the Colonials to use and by the time the Vaalbarans got around to attempting to colonize M64 the colonials had assimilated all the life in the Galaxy and were ready to move on to the next galaxy.
A war started immediately and lasted for thousands of years, and even though the Vaalbarans had committed all of their resources to this war, even pulling troops from other colonized Galaxies all that did was give the colonials more biomatter to assimilate and eventually the Vaalbaran empire collapsed with only a few remaining vestiges of Vaalbaran society in their colonized Galaxies.
What the Vaalbarans didnt know is that the Colonials developed a way to detect the subspace signature created by a transwarp drive and this allowed the colonials to figure out where the Vaalbarans were by detecting their ships coming in and out of transwarp.
Colonial facts:
-Each colonial is a nanite measuring 2000 nanometres in diameter and together with other colonials they create a distributed intelligence that far exceeds that of any organic species
-if a biological organism comes into physical contact with the flesh of a Colonial construct it has an almost 100% chance of infecting that living thing with nanites
-colonial constructs come in all shapes and sizes and are formed from the biomass of assimilated organisms, these constructs can take any shape the Colonials require, some common ones are biological ships and vehicles, combat creatures, and giant fleshy constructs that extract energy from the environment allowing the colonials to live
-the colonials cannot survive outside of the body of a biological organism as they were never designed to and its likely they were designed this way in some attempt to control them
-the Vaalbarans developed a disruptor weapon near the end of the war that emits electromagnetic waves in the right frequency to resonate with the internal antenna of the nanite and fry it, but by that time there was no hope of a Vaalbaran victory
Modern Vaalbarans in M81
Summery:
The Vaalbarans are an intelligent dinosaur species from the southern side of the M81 Galaxy, they are herbivores and belong to the ornithopod group of dinosaurs descending from a Morrosaurus. Although their society has been peaceful in the past it has more recently fallen under a totalitarian ultranationalist fascist regime.
History:
200 years ago Vaalbaran society was rather peaceful as the Vaalbarans are naturally prey animals and are not a naturally aggressive species. However around 150 years ago there was a massive famine and this lead of civil unrest as the citizens of Vaalbara wanted someone to blame and although they were not a naturally aggressive species they are prone to a mob mentality.
The famine was caused by massive swarms of Deinosonus megalohymeni better known as harpyfies eating 60% of the crops leaving vaalbara with massive food shortages. Vaalbaran citizens were starving and being subjected to mandatory food rationing. There was a lot of unrest and distrust in the institutions of society and there was an anti-government sentiment spreading in the populus.
In these desperate times there was also a lot of bigotry against the Vaalbraans with red feathers called the Clogrograts (derogatorily called Cloggs) as it was a stereotype that Clogrograts were lazy and a burden on society. The Vaalbaran government quickly began to push the idea in the media that the reason the ‘good clean purple feathered Vaalbarans’ were starving was because lazy Cloggs were draining the food from society and not giving anything back.
The Vaalbaran media pushed for the election of the fascist Cloister Durvoi and after he was elected first the Clogrograts were ghettoized and pushed from society and this eventually lead to genocide as the whole Clogrograt population was exterminated. And after the extermination the famines mysteriously stopped seemingly proving the idea that the Naiders (the purple feathered Vaalbarans) were the superior race. however the actual reason why the famines stop is because the harpyflies waking cycle was over and it would be another 400 years before the new larvae in the ground would emerge as adults and do the same kind of devastation.
The Conspiracy:
200 years ago The Vaalbaran government knew about the ancient Vaalbarans and wished to start rebuilding their empire. There was a problem however, the current Vaalbaran society at the time would not accept a totalitarian regime that saw all other species as inferior. The current Vaalbaran society was peaceful and accepting of differences, so the government planned to use the inevitable crisis that would happen when the harpyflies awoke for their 400 year cycle to sow hatred of the other into the hearts of the Vaalbaran people, and they succeeded. After this the Vaalbaran people saw themselves as the supreme beings of the universe just in time for the invention of FTL 100 years ago.
note : harpyflies have become a real problems because they eat the same plants the Vaalbarans do, so when the vaalbarans clear forest for crop fields it creates an over-abundance of these plants while also displacing the predators of the harpyfly. So each time they come out of the ground in their adult forms they find more food and fewer predators so over the generations harpyfly numbers have increased to plague proportions. This situation is becoming an ecological and societal disaster but as the problem only rears its head every 400 years the vaalbaran government has been sweeping it under the rug.
Technology:
The Vaalbarans are about 100 years ahead of 21st century humanity in technology and still make use of projectile weapons and silicon step-by-step computers. Their ships are capable of traveling 1 light year every 5 days and their ships are armed with crude proton beam weapons and lack energy shields instead having to rely on heavy armor and crude projectile intercepting lasers.
Biological facts:
-the Vaalbarans have a strange mating ritual where a male will gather blue objects to decorate his house in hopes to attract a female, the male with the most blue objects is the most attractive to the female
-the Vaalbarans have hollow bones like most dinosaurs
-during their evolution the Vaalbarans developed a more upright posture as their brains got bigger, this was to balance their new enlarged skulls instead of being front heavy
-vaalbarans stand at about 1 meter tall
-Vaalbarans are capable of seeing ultraviolet
Vaalbaran Religion and Culture:
The Vaalbaran religion and culture revolves around the worship of ascended ancestors, the Vaalbarans believe that when you die you will either go to Shol’el if you have been honorable enough to ascend into godhood, or you will go to hol if you are not god material. Hol is not a punishment however it is just another world where life continues as it did when you were alive it's just the world of the Dead. Shol’el is reserved for those who have achieved something so honorable that they will become a god.
Hol takes the appearance of an endless conifer forest filled with Dinosaurs and other animals and the dead must survive as they did in life, in this world if you die you just “respawn” at the entrance of Hol which is guarded by a 3 headed allosaurus, if people choose they may opt to reincarnate into a new body and try to achieve godhood again otherwise they may choose to stay in Hol forever.
There is also an afterlife called Sool which is only for the most horrible and evil of Vaalbarans and in this afterlife those who go there are subjected to ironic punishments based on the misdead they did in life but its not eternal it only lasts for 500 years then they go to Hol

Vaalbaran Holidays and festivals:
Figg: a festival at the end of the year (Vaalbara’s years go for 300 days) that is about contemplation of the year behind and the year in front, this is celebrates with a feast and Gift giving between family and friends
Shoph: a day on the 223rd day of the year where you dress up as your ancestors and go camping in the wild and have a day without advanced technology to live how the ancestors lived
Cloogg: a Day on the 34th day of the year where each family must burn down a fruit tree as an offering to Eloi and in exchange Eloi will make 1000 more fruit trees to grow
Vaalbaran Society facts:
-The Vaalbaran economy is divided into different guilds that all answer to the Vaalbarans governments and Vaalbaran citizens can only make a business if they have the approval of these guilds and they participate within the guild system, guilds include but are not limited to farming, Research and Development, military development, building, food processing, consumer goods, etc, each business must be part of, and be subordinate to one of the many guilds operated by the government
-Vaalbarans do not tolerate anything they perceive as imperfection, such as disability, LGBTQ+ status, romantic relationships with other species, “genetic impurity” and many more, the punishment for any of these things is usually death but when a member of the government is related to or otherwise involved with a vaalbaran with one of these “afflictions” the “afflicted” individual is often just banished from society
-The Vaalbaran government also does not tolerate the propagation of ideas that are against the regime, the Government installs cameras and listening equipment on the street, in buildings, in bathrooms and even in peoples houses, there is no such thing as privacy in Vaalbaran society, and Vaalbarans caught expressing “dangerous ideas” are taken away and usually executed
-in Vaalbaran society there are alot of social programs that help the vaalbaran citizens that the regime considers worthy/superior however, and with every child a vaalbaran family has they get payment from the government to support the family, there are also government subsidies for families buying houses
-all media in Vaalbaran society has to support the regime and its values
-the Vaalbaran version of the internet is not interactive and only government officials are able to post and change information on the internet, all other citizens are only able to view what is on the internet
-like thier ancestors modern Vaalbarans also keep Theral as slaves and a vaalbaran family is not complete without a theral slave they are extremely common
Super soldier program
Vaalbarans are very weak compared to humans so they made human/Vaalbaran hybrids as a race of super soldiers, they are not seen as equal to Vaalbarans though and are used as cannon fodder. they have equal strength to humans and are kept in line using a biological chemical dependancy which only the Vaalbarans know how to satisfy.
