SpaceEngine 0.980/0.980e Modern Drivers Tutorial
SpaceEngine is a massive part of our community, both historically and currently. Thousands of images and ideas have spawned from it, and version 0.980 has been the largest source of inspiration in the past 10 years of the community. Sadly, version 0.980 often does not work with modern drivers.
Thus this tutorial will serve as a quick-start guide in how to make SpaceEngine 0.980 and its 0.980e patch work with more modern systems, as well as an easy to access location for the version's instillation folder.
NOTE: This solution only works for PC-users, MAC is incompatible with this fix.
SpaceEngine has moved on from this version to their new version which is for sale on Steam. Be sure to check it out, and please don't bother them for fixes on version 0.980. You can ask for 0.980 fixes in our #SpaceEgine channel over on our Discord.
Required Files
- SpaceEngine version 0.980 can be found here:
- SpaceEngine 0.980e Patch can be found here:
- NVIDIA PROFILE ISPECTOR can be found here: This is needed for the fix
NVIDIA Profile Inspector
The issue with older SE versions on newer computer drivers is that the 0.980 program is entirely incompatible due to drivers long since updating past it. Instead of reverting to older drivers, the Profile Inspector effectively bypasses this limitation, allowing your PC to run 0.980 through an unconventional workaround.
No need to worry about any of these files. All you’re doing is configuring Space Engine to function with newer drivers without making any changes to the drivers themselves.
Applying the Fix

After completing the installation of all required files, launch the NVIDIA Profile Inspector. Navigate to the "Profile:" dropdown menu located in the top-left corner, and select "SPACE ENGINE" from the list.

Navigate to the "5 - Common" tab section and locate the "Extension Limit" entry. Modify its value to "0x0000A474".
Once completed, click the "Apply Changes" button on the top right
Next, boot your SpaceEngine 0.980 program and you should be all-set!
Additional Notes
- If your drivers are updated, you may need to repeat this process. While this was necessary in some reported experiences, it may not always be the case.
- Later driver updates your computer has after applying this fix may require you to repeat this process. While some user had to do so, this may not be a universal requirement.
