Constructed in 100 AGY (Ambrosian Galactic Year) to accommodate the growing number of extrastellar visitors in the century following the founding of the Ambrosia Alliance, Aquissa Checkpoint marked the beginning of a broader initiative to expand security infrastructure throughout the planet. This initiative would later extend throughout the Syltphaan System and across all Ophono6ti-controlled space, establishing large atmospheric checkpoints on numerous worlds, the level of which being dependent on the world in question. These stations were designed to provide an additional layer of inspection beyond orbital scans, in order to have greater control over incoming traffic.

At Aquissa Checkpoint, visitors may be required to remain aboard the station while arrangements are made for their onward travel to the surface proper. In some cases, their ships are required to remain aboard the station, and they themselves are transported to their destinations via provided shuttles and chauffeurs, though this practice is not mandated universally and is usually reserved for military personnel or governmental officials of any national entity or state.

Each of Aquissa Station’s twin structures features expansive landing platforms equipped with designated docking stations designed to handle the arrival of large vessels. These platforms can accommodate ships up to 1.5 kilometers in length, providing secure berthing for heavy transports, diplomatic cruisers, and any other major inbound craft. Vessels exceeding this size; such as battlecruisers or even capital ships, cannot physically dock due to far exceeding the length and weight limits of the station Instead, these ships must undergo vetting procedures while remaining airborne in the station’s controlled atmospheric zone. In such cases, inspection teams perform in-atmosphere clearances, and only once the ship has passed all checks will it be authorized to proceed to planetfall.

While these surface-level platforms are the most visible feature of the station, the majority of processing takes place within the extensive network of numbered docking bays built into the underlying superstructure. These enclosed bays are accessed via reinforced approach corridors and are equipped with large-scale automated hydraulic systems capable of securing a vessel in place within a processing chamber. Upon arrival, the pilot is separated from the ship and escorted to an internal checkpoint within the bay.

Support personnel are equally vital, operating in fields such as maintenance, medical services, logistics coordination, hospitality, and retail. Many of these roles require specific certifications, particularly in ship handling, security clearance, and interstellar Ophonoti Demarchy law, making the station a hub for skilled professionals within the Syltphaan System at large.

Wages on the station, like all professions in Ophonoti space, are paid in the galactic standard currency; Ambrosian Currency Unit (ACU). The lowest-paying roles, such as entry-level maintenance workers, sanitation crews, and certain retail attendants, meet the Ambrosia Alliance suggested minimum wage of 10 ACU per standard year Mid-tier positions, including customs agents, traffic control assistants, and shuttle crew members, typically earn between 15-25 ACU per standard year, reflecting their greater responsibilities and required training. Specialist and leadership roles, such as senior engineers, chief security officers, and docking operations supervisors, often command salaries in the 30-50 ACU range, while senior command staff within Aquissa Control can exceed 70 ACU per standard year.

The station’s pay scale also incorporates substantial non-monetary benefits to attract and retain qualified personnel in what is considered a high-demand, "high-stress" environment in contrast to other Niquellan employment opportunities. These include fully subsidized housing within the station’s habitation districts, free medical care at the onboard clinics, and priority transport passes for travel between Niquella and other Ambrosia Alliance worlds. Performance bonuses are common for operational staff during peak travel seasons or in situations involving heightened security. While the demanding nature of the work can lead to high turnover in some entry-level roles, the combination of competitive ACU salaries, stable housing, and prestige associated with serving on Niquella’s most important checkpoint makes Aquissa Station a sought-after posting for many professionals across the Syltphaan System.

Non-organic inhabitants of Aquissa Checkpoint consist primarily of advanced automata designed to support; and in some cases, directly oversee the station’s vast range of operations. These machines range from Amanoid service units and cargo-handling drones, to highly specialized maintenance constructs capable of performing complex repairs on the station's myriad functions. Many are permanently integrated into the station’s systems, functioning as embedded control intelligences for docking bay hydraulics, environmental regulation, and security surveillance networks.

The presence of automated personnel significantly reduces the station’s reliance on organic labor for repetitive, dangerous, or precision-dependent tasks. Cargo-moving drones handle the bulk of freight transfers, reducing turnaround times for docking vessels, while security constructs patrol sensitive areas without fatigue or risk to living personnel. Non-organic customs processors assist in document verification, biometric matching, and ship registry cross-referencing, operating at speeds far beyond typical organic capabilities.

Overview

Aquissa Checkpoint is a large floating landing array located on the Ophonoti home world of Niquella, and operated by the local Niquellan government to vet and track all extraplanetary visitors to the world before they make planetfall. Commissioned by the Ophonoti's Forever-Abound Technological Demarchy, It serves as the primary station for this purpose and plays a central role in maintaining security and monitoring incoming traffic to Niquella, with thousands of ships coming and going at any given hour. Positioned within the planet’s atmosphere, the station functions as the first physical point of contact for many travelers arriving from beyond Niquella.

This initiative would later extend throughout the Syltphaan System and across all Ophonoti-controlled space, establishing large atmospheric checkpoints on numerous worlds, the level of which being dependent on the world in question. These stations were designed to provide an additional layer of inspection beyond orbital scans, in order to have greater control over incoming extraplanetary traffic.

Location

Situated at coordinates 7.56° N, 92.46° W of the Aquissa Region, Aquissa Checkpoint hovers at an altitude of approximately 15 kilometers (around 50,000 feet) above Niquella’s surface, suspended within the planet’s upper cloud layers. Its location places it roughly 30 kilometers from Afalesh City, the largest and most populous urban center on the planet. This proximity has made Afalesh the primary destination for arrivals processed through the station, with over 80% of all outbound traffic from Aquissa Checkpoint bound directly for the city.

Layout

The facility is composed of two identical structures, each measuring approximately 3.5 kilometers in length (2.7 miles / 3,500 meters), and both contain thousands of different designated rooms and stations. These structures are interconnected by reinforced transit bridges and suspended docking platforms, allowing for high-capacity ship handling even during peak arrival periods. Each segment houses multiple landing arrays, hangar bays, and customs processing hubs.

Vast illuminated runways and docking pads dominate the upper decks, while deep vertical towers extend below the main platform, housing service bays, maintenance facilities, housing units for select members of its on-board staff, and security departments. The station’s exterior is lined with glowing blue guidance panels and landing indicators, aiding pilots in navigating Niquella’s sometimes turbulent atmospheric currents.

Aquissa Control

Aquissa Control is the station’s central logistical command center, housed within the mirrored tower structures of each platform. From these hubs, traffic coordinators and security teams oversee vessel approaches, docking operations, cargo transfers, and passenger processing enacted on the levels below. The twin design ensures full operational redundancy, allowing one tower to assume complete control if the other is offline; both being outfitted with advanced communications, sensors, and secure links to Niquella’s broader global-defense grid.

Docking Bays

Each of Aquissa Station’s twin structures features expansive landing platforms equipped with designated docking stations designed to handle the arrival of large vessels. These platforms can accommodate ships up to 1.5 kilometers in length, providing secure berthing for heavy transports, diplomatic cruisers, and any other major inbound craft. Vessels exceeding this size; such as battlecruisers or even capital ships, cannot physically dock due to far exceeding the length and weight limits of the station Instead; these ships must undergo vetting procedures while remaining airborne in the station’s controlled atmospheric zone. In such cases, inspection teams perform in-atmosphere clearances, and only once the ship has passed all checks will it be authorized to proceed to planetfall.

While these surface-level platforms are the most visible feature of Aquissa Checkpoint, the majority of processing takes place within the extensive network of numbered docking bays built into the station's underlying superstructure. These enclosed bays are accessed via reinforced approach corridors, and are equipped with large-scale automated hydraulic systems capable of securing a vessel in place within a processing chamber. Upon arrival, the pilot is separated from the ship and escorted to an internal checkpoint within the bay.

Inside these checkpoints, pilots and designated passengers are required to provide key travel details, including their reason for visiting Niquella, intended length of stay, and final destination. While this interview process takes place, the docked vessel undergoes a comprehensive automated scan using multi-spectrum sensor arrays to detect contraband, hazardous materials, undisclosed weaponry, or unauthorized modifications. Should the system flag any anomalies, trained organic inspection teams are dispatched to board and investigate the vessel directly.

Housing Districts and Commercial Amenities

Aquissa Checkpoint also supports a moderate on-board community through its integrated housing districts. These residential zones are primarily reserved for long-term staff, including traffic controllers, customs officials, engineering crews, and security personnel, as well as a small number of contracted specialists and diplomats on extended assignments. Housing is organized into modular habitation towers located deep within the station’s lower superstructure, shielded from the bustle of docking operations above.

Each unit is equipped with climate control, communications terminals, and direct access to internal transit systems, ensuring staff can move quickly to their assigned workstations when required swiftly, or even covertly if needed. The districts are designed for comfort during extended deployments, with communal areas, dining halls, and recreation lounges providing a sense of normalcy despite the station’s high-security environment.

Surrounding the residential areas are the station’s commercial sectors, which cater to both crew members and transiting travelers. These sectors feature a variety of shops, ranging from basic supply depots and clothing outlets, to specialty vendors offering imported goods from across the Syltphaan System and the wider galaxy at large.

Travelers awaiting clearance often spend their time here, browsing markets, restocking provisions, or making last-minute purchases before continuing to the surface. Small-scale trade in exotic goods is common, with many merchants taking advantage of the station’s position as a gateway to Niquella to reach a diverse clientele.

Aquissa Checkpoint also maintains an extensive array of amenities intended to accommodate the needs of travelers during sometimes lengthy processing times. Multiple dining facilities are available, including quick-service eateries, upscale restaurants, and culturally themed venues operated by Niquellan culinary guilds.

Observation decks lined with reinforced panoramic glass provide sweeping views of the planet’s cloudscape, allowing passengers to witness Afalesh City’s distant skyline while awaiting transport.

Additional services include currency exchange bureaus, data-link terminals for interstellar communications, medical clinics staffed by licensed practitioners, and short-term lodging suites for those requiring overnight stays.

For leisure and morale, the station offers entertainment facilities such as holotheatres, simulated zero-gravity recreation chambers, and cultural exhibition halls that showcase Niquellan/Ophonoti history, art, and technological achievements.

Support personnel are equally vital; operating in fields such as maintenance, medical services, logistics coordination, hospitality, and retail.

The lowest-paying roles, such as entry-level maintenance workers, sanitation crews, and certain retail attendants, meet the Ambrosia Alliance suggested minimum wage of 10 ACU per standard year.

Mid-tier positions, including customs agents, traffic control assistants, and shuttle crew members, typically earn between 15-25 ACU per standard year, reflecting their greater responsibilities and required training.

These include fully subsidized housing within the station’s habitation districts, free medical care at the onboard clinics, and priority transport passes for travel between Niquella, and other Ambrosia Alliance worlds.

Performance bonuses are common for operational staff during peak travel seasons or in situations involving heightened security. While the demanding nature of the work can lead to high turnover in some entry-level roles, the combination of competitive ACU salaries, stable housing, and prestige associated with serving on Niquella’s most important checkpoint, makes Aquissa Station a sought-after posting for many professionals across the Syltphaan System.

Automated Staff
