Messier 74 or the Phantom Galaxy (also called NGC 628 or M74) is an average Sc type galaxy of 25 Billion stars. It is 32 Million light years from the Milky Way.

This galaxy is the capital and most of the territory of the Saka-Lowuks Entente, a small nation boarding both the CoB and CUEN.

General

Messier 74 has a population of about 1 Sextillion, making it fairly sparely populated for a galaxy of it's size. Regardless of this small population, the galaxy has played an important role in the history of the region.

Notable organizations like BAIRC and Lactdromeda Corporation call this galaxy home.

History

The galaxy formed around the same time as the Milky Way, about 12.3 Billion years ago. It has had about three kardeshev III civilizations rise and fall before the Lowuks Entente achieved type III status in 12,000 CE.

The Syndicate of Stellar Entities

The first civilization to form in the galaxy was likely called the Syndicate of Stellar Entities. While mythology and legend cloud most of its history, general information about the nation is known. This nation is estimated to have formed somewhere between 350,000 to 250,000 years ago, making it older than humanity itself. The nation was likely a democratic confederation. It was populated by an unknown number of unknown species. No fossils have been discovered of them to this day.

The nation, called The Prime Civilization by natives, was most likely an early Type III civilization by the time it fell by around 175,000. Ruins in almost every galaxy in the Local Group and nearby suggest that most have been at least visited by the nation. The name itself is a rough translation based on the language found on the ruins.

Why the nation fell is almost entirely unknown. The most popular theory, however, is that the civilization fell to some sort of mass suicide by the members of the civilization. Small references to the "End of Years" was found inscribed on most of the ruins. Most of the ruins and an anomalously large number of the planets within the galaxy are covered in a thin layer of fused sediments and the byproducts of radio-active decay, implying a self-destruction using nuclear weapons.

The Triumvirate

The next nation, simply called The Triumvirate, formed in 156,000 BCE. This nation was almost entirely automated. It wasn't so much of a nation as a hoard of machines controlled by three Legionnaires.

The nation fell into a civil was over a dispute over what to do with all the primitive species in the area around them (which included the Local Group). One wanted to exterminate it because it could be a threat, the other wanted to put shells around each of their planets in order to protect them but also keep them contained, and the final one wanted to do nothing.

Messier 74 fell into this war that lasted for ten millennia before Black Hole Bombs were detonated all over the galaxy in 143,000 BCE, nearly sterilizing it. The Legionnaires almost went extinct after this. In the end, one drone made it back from the Milky Way after a reconnaissance mission. It was instructed to find a planet that had life that could coexist with the Legionnaires. It found humans and they were as close to the legionnaires as one could find, so it brought them to the planet Vincule. The Drone terraformed the planet and then deactivated, it's missions complete.

The Hand of God

The Hand of God was another civilization within the galaxy. This civilization fell in 14 CE, and was an early type III civilization at it's height. The civilization was comprised of beings called the Serafim. This species believed themselves to be the literal descendants of a deity they simply called "God." As such, they began to purge the galaxy of "filthy demon-spawn" (what they called the few remaining self-aware species within the galaxy). They ended up shattering into hundreds of small pieces in 126 BCE due to an info-hazard that spread like a plague throughout their civilization.

The factions lost the will to expand, since they were only doing it for the benefit of a god they didn't believe in anymore. Even the most radical of the Serafim lost their faith when they saw their empire fall. Nihilism and similar outlooks began to grip them and they slowly died out. They had no reason to reproduce anymore. They essentially were a species unable to propagate without a religion to keep them going. Only one in a billion of the Serafim had the will to keep going. Their civilization died out within a generation and has not recovered.

The Lowuks Entente

The Atlins managed to survive the purges of the Serafim, and were one of the last species to be alive in the galaxy. There are currently only four, The Atlins, The Legionnaires, The remaining Serafim, and the Orcubor. All others were destroyed. They formed out of the ashes of a worn-out galaxy. Everywhere were defunct Dyson Spheres, stellar ruins, mined out planets, and destroyed ships. They used these ruins to their advantage and repaired all of them to give them an advantage compared to other species. The Entente became a Kardeshev III civilization in 14777 CE.

During the Orion War, The Fornax War, and even The War of Decamillenial Transition, the Entente remained largely untouched, allowing many refugees to flee to their galaxy. The Entente's relocation programs encouraged quadrillions to move to the galaxy. Many businesses even had their headquarters in the galaxy due to the tax incentives. Even so, only a relative few ever decided to relocate, as the cost of relocation was simply too great for most. As a tax haven, however, many of the top one thousandth of a percent reside there.

It wasn't until the War of the Ancients that the galaxy was hit hard. For the first time in history, the number of refugees was too great for the Entente to handle. Many of the quadrillions of prisoners of war that the Confederacy ended up taking were simply dumped into the galaxy without the Entente's consent. This required them to shut their doors and enforce their neutrality. This gave them a huge population boom and

Messier 74, it's surrounding galaxies, some galaxies administrated by the Sakagami House (that was also struggling to survive at this point), and another smaller civilization formed The Greater Sakagami-Lowuks Entente.
