The Voidsea
'One of the earliest records we have of the Voidsea refer to it as 'Outer Space'. As far as names go, it's appropriate, I suppose - They thought of 'Space' as being 'outside' their worlds, but the truth is the opposite - We are always within it. Our worlds are but islands within the Voidsea.' - Captain Abyss-Breach, 17th Century of the Valhallan Age
Everything that exists is within the Voidsea.
Formerly known as Outer Space, the cosmos, the astrorealms, and many other names by many different cultures, both before and since the Valhallan Age, is the name given to the enormous expanse in which all of existence is located within, or at the very least, connected to.
Its defining feature is the vast, uninhabitable distances between celestial bodies. Some of these celestial bodies, usually Void Islands, occasionally evolve life, and produce sapient Kinde, capable of thinking, and understanding, the world around them.
To traverse the immense distances in the Voidsea, the use of advanced technology, biological engineering, or other such adaptations for many lifeforms is required.
During the earliest days of Voidsea travel, the sheer size of was often compared to an immense, empty ocean by those who traverse it. It is from this observation that the name ‘Voidsea’ came into being.
Despite those origins of its name, the Voidsea is not empty - At least, not anymore.
In the Valhallan Age, the Voidsea is teeming with life - The actions of th
Terminology
In previous eras, it has been known by many different names - Outer Space, the Black, the Ether, the Void, the Expanse, the Nothingness.
The change in terminology often comes down to a change in perception of what the Voidsea precisely is, and ones place within it. Most cultures that have not left their home Void Island typically refer to the Voidsea being something "out" of their world. As they develop Voidsea travel, they begin to think of their world as being "within" the Voidsea, and adopt a new name, better reflecting this revelation.
'Voidsea' typically refers to the vacuum between celestial bodies, but is also considered the entirety of reality itself. The term is, therefore, often used interchangeably with 'Universe', or 'Cosmic Tide', as these all refer to the same thing.
The Origins of Life in the Voidsea
In Ages past, much of the Voidsea was uninhabited.
Life could come about in many ways; environmental shifts creating perfect conditions for life, cosmic accidents, panspermia, and chemical convergence and evolution. There are many ways in which life began to first emerge in the Voidsea.
Usually, life emerged on Void Islands, such as Verdrasil, Iroshara, or Qo'Ap. Exceptions, however, are known to happen.
In addition, a majority of this life is confined to their various celestial bodies, the Voidships they construct for themselves, and many other types of inhabitable regions, some artificially constructed, others they discover on their own. Even this is not a hard rule, as life has evolved to survive even in the vacuum, without any additional assistance.
Though life existed in abundance, the distances between these sources of life were often both immense, and insurmountable. It could take longer than the entire lifespan of just one member of a sapient Kinde to travel just one light year - For some Kinde, that would not even take them to the borders of their own solar systems.
And it remained this way until Voidsea faring Kinde began to emerge.
The Fare-way Explosion
Dozens of forces - Billions of years of evolution, the rise and fall of countless civilizations, and the seeding of Kinde, both organically, and engineered, has culminated in the Voidsea being full of life.
Intelligent Kinde have aided in the spread of non-intelligent life, bringing fauna and lora from across the Voidsea to a variety of worlds they would have never gotten the chance to reach, resulting in ever more life, and evermore strange quirks of evolution.
Even long before the Technopocalypse, or the Confluence, the Fleshkinde, the Mechanicalkinde, and the Mineralkinde had spread across their galaxies, spreading life and civilizations across as many worlds as they could. When the Technopocalypse arrived, for a while, the Voidsea stood still, as it had done for eons in the past.
But Taekni’s emergence only further kicked evolution into overdrive, with the mere existence of the Broadwave providing many beneficial mutations within all things, creating new forms of life, such as the Spiritkinde, and allowing for the sentient life that survived the Technopocalypse to reclaim their places amongst the stars. Though for those that remembered, the VVoidsea did not resemble the empty ocean of their myths, but had been transformed just as they had by the power of Taekni and the Broadwave.
New astronomical phenomena, the rise of new Kinde, the emergence of new technologies, and natural tears in reality itself, creating gateways to new, unexplored regions, and the formation of new, terrible zones of danger and death. Worlds thought abandoned proved to be the new homes of Kindes that had been brought from far, far away, and all across the Voidsea, new nations committed themselves to Geopolitical Stratagem, while in the Shadows, the Great Game never ended. Ancient tales from countless worlds imagined the Voidsea in a thousand fantastical ways - In the Valhallan Age, the Voidsea is all of those tales, combined, plus a few in ways that no one ever could have predicted.
The Voidsea is vast, yet dense - And full of dangers. In the ages past, when it was thought empty, those dangers were minimal in comparison to the Valhallan Age - From regular solar storms, to creatures like Void Dragons, to worlds that have evolved to be as deadly as conceivably possible, to invisible portals to the Sky Shore or who-knows where, back to solar storms enhanced by massive amounts of Taeknikinetic energy. White certainly a realm of wonder, it is also a realm of immense danger that must be navigated carefully, or risk falling to any number of threats.
The true size and reach of the Voidsea is not fully understood - If an end to it exists, it has not been discovered, and there are those that suspect it may well be infinite. To those within it, it may be a distinction without a difference. But despite its impact, Taekni is a very young Arcane art in a cosmological scale, and its true impact and capabilities have not yet been understood. It remains possible that all of this is but the tip of the iceberg, and the very ends of reality itself are soon to be within reach of those who are willing to traverse toward it.
