It is a founding member of the United Nations of the Flower Galaxy. The Marakat Interstellar Union also has a small amount of territory in the galactic halo above and below its territory in the Charity Arm, as well as a few systems in the Iriat Galaxy, and manages to have a large amount of trade lanes going through its territory. It is bordered by the Florathel-Tuar Interstellar Commune towards the rim, the Kingdom of Saihera and the Pecay-Po Federation of Nalachi above and below the disk, and the Cnara-Frealee Federation towards the core. The most populated planet in the MIU is Artaclate, as it has been since the Union's founding.
The MIU is separated into five main provinces, each of which is separated into several sub-provinces, implemented to maintain a stable decentralized government over the diverse species under the control of the Union. Most provinces are relatively sparsely populated, with the Artaclate Province containing a full 72 percent of the population of the MIU. The empty areas are mostly governed by local forces, are populated by many Hyperlane networks which allow transit between the major worlds, and often contain life-giving planets that haven't reached the space age yet.
Founded on the basis of a loose decentralized government, the Marakat Interstellar Union has given a large amount of autonomy to its provinces, enabling them to enforce local laws and control smaller sub-provinces. While effective at promoting cohesion and avoiding fragmentation of the MIU, this has made passing national laws a tedious task - something which has decreased the lifespan of other governments throughout history. Even so, the Marakat Interstellar Union excels at the national level of development, low poverty rates, and good relations with its neighbors.
Being one of the signers of the Fifth Treaty of Providence, they have control over a slice of the Providence Neutral Zone, and are currently researching a large amount of ancient Providence Union artifacts squirreled away in the mazelike Inner Providence Cluster. Their slice of the PNZ is connected to their main territory by an artificial wormhole directly to the Toralaskis System, which has elevated that system into one of the five Major Systems.
