The shattered world of Illumination is as far and varied as any, but the residents of the Great Sea’s Archipelago cannot so easily cross the chasms of void with span for hundreds of miles, leaving most of it inaccessible. Left to travel only between their own islands, most of which are in an unending winter with yet another millennia to go, the Lumies who inhabit this archipelago often struggle to afford food and shelter, while the upper class lives comfortably in their mansions and airships, putting themselves above it all.

Mana (Summarized) Mana is a particular form of energy that works uniquely when compared to other kinds of energy. It is used in nearly all modern technology, and it can be found and used in both its stable and unstable forms. When stable, mana takes the form of crystals, which allows them to be used as a battery for a mana powered machine.
Ley Lines Ley lines are the natural paths that mana takes within the world, connecting the shattered pieces of the planet and allowing subterranean movement of mana. Though once thought to be only a mythological concept, the more recent advancements in mana based technology allow for invisible mana to be detected, and by extension, the existence of ley lines have been fully proven in recent years.
Seas Vast bodies of water separating islands from each other, typically held in place by ley lines, seas are one of the two primary obstacles to travel, and are generally seen as the more manageable one. As such, islands connected by seas generally have a longer history of interaction. Additionally, Islands surrounded by sea can use it as an additional food source, allowing for fishing, as well as gathering salt water flora.
Free Floating Isles Free floating isles are geographical features found suspended naturally, which pose a significant challenge to navigate to and from without an airship. Long ago, many of these isles were touching a sea, allowing them to be accessed by other nearby isles, however the drift of ley lines slowly separated them overtime, as such, there are several free floating isles which have cultures that were untouched until recent times.
