Aegyn is the fourth world around Helyar located in Aylathiya. Mirroring its sun, Aegyn has a binary companion, Olaris. Four-hundred million people call Aegyn home, spread across atolls and landmasses built upon the corpses of its ruins. With its mountains flattened to make way for a planet-spanning city, two thousand years ago its melted ice caps flooded most of the planet. With massive geo-engineering projects rebuilding its once impressive glaciers, Aegyn's sea level has begun falling. The Humans that never left this iconic world now struggle to claim this land before settlers from across the galaxy do.

Humans first colonized the planet in about 150 CE. From there, they remained stagnant as development slowed to a crawl under the repressive First Aeternal Society. After the civilization collapsed in 751, Aegyn remained a backwater only reachable by magi. Sedrua discovered the planet in 5475 and granted its inhabitants minor technology in exchange for loyalty. After the galaxy suffered through the Sedrua-Quartet War, the Triumvirate Civilization won control of the Helyar-Byutix system. Humans eagerly participated in interstellar civilization when given the chance; under the Triumvirate their population, productive capability, and economy blossomed. They formed the province of Anthrovia, which would later become a state as the Triumvirate entered its republic era.

With the collapse of the Triumvirate, Aegyn still clung to its high status. In 8441 CE, the largest remnant of the Triumvirate, Florenta, conquered Helyar and easily bested its infighting warlords. Aegyn, despite only having ninety percent standard gravity, started having all of Florenta orbit it in a sense. The capital of Erstes Konsortium, the division representing Helyar in Florenta, it became something of a second federal government. In a bloody civil war, called the Great Empyreal Crusade, Erstes Konsortium and allies overthrew Florenta and secured independence. Gran Rubedo's crusade replaced one theocracy with another. This church overthrew governments, created dynasties, and destroyed planets, one of which being Aegyn. Gran Rubedo humbled the proud people of Aegyn, causing them to abandon their world to join their brethren around other stars.

Since then, Aegyn's population slowly recovered as its radioactive wastes slowly became safe, but empty, fields. As plants began growing in the wreckage, they cleaned the air and soil. To this day, the relics of the past remain, however. Most soil is organic matter suspended in pulverized plastic, glass, and mortar. Most water is toxic to drink and anything larger than a bacterium does not reside in the oceans. Recently, specially-bred trees have reduced carbon dioxide enough for the ice caps to return. The original pride of this humbled world is returning.

Aegyn first formed 4.9 billion years ago and first hosted life 4.0 billion years ago. The life remained as simple microbes until 1.2 billion years when the first complex cells emerged. From there, life exploded into a large variety of organisms. It would never quite make it onto land as various impacts consistently reset life's tentative presence beyond the oceans. Those same impacts spread Aegyn's life to Vyllurian and Olaris who gained ecosystems of their own. 176 million years before the present day, Ma'eau came across the world only to discover that it hosted a locally evolved ecosystem filled mostly with single-celled life. Ma'eau spurred the evolution of land-based complex life, drastically increasing Aegyn's biomass and biodiversity.

While Aegyn's native microbes persist to this day, its complex life came from space via panspermia. The impacts that brought complex life to Aegyn its life to Vyllurian and Olaris who gained ecosystems of their own. 176 million years before the present day, Ma'eau fully integrated the world into its galaxy-spanning ecosystem.

Zaphenim created Humans on Olaris; their first target for colonization was Aegyn whose fertile soil, unparalleled oxygen concentration, and vast seas made the world more desirable than their home. By 300, several million lived on Aegyn, and a smaller loyal number resided on Olaris. Aegyn had very little in the way of industry, economic output, or even anything beyond a subsistence economy. These early humans were potent users of Thaumaturgy, meaning they did not need technology to advance. Even after Zaphenim's civilization collapsed, Humans lived on Aegyn undisturbed for thousands of years.

With time, Aegyn's inhabitants forgot their heritage as Zaphenim's creation. They began worshiping the twin suns, spirits, ancestors, or any other conceivable deity. They had even forgotten much of the finer points of Thaumaturgy, and the art had long since fallen into obscurity after large-scale suppression by the ruling class. Over centuries, far less effective means of channeling magic (meaning zero effectiveness), such as astrology or geomancy, replaced Thaumaturgy. Over several more centuries, the population began rapidly falling as global cooling reduced the ecosystem's carrying capacity.

Pre-Space Civilizations
Civilization reemerged on the continent Yoasobi in about 5009. These civilizations started as small city-states surrounded by farmland. Throughout the centuries, they became sprawling empires with writing systems, an advanced grasp of mathematics, and territory taking up the whole continent. Around this time, they began spreading out from their home continent in the first ocean-faring vessels. They first colonized the continent Aimer, a northerly continent cooler than Yoasobi. They went on to colonize the other four major land masses of Rin, Ninelie, Oxt, and Ayaka. These landmasses, more accurately described as large islands, were colonized in a lifetime.

Those living on Yoasobi discovered iron in 5500. Around this time, a probe from Sedrua encountered humankind. Wasting no time, it signaled home and began using its language algorithms to figure out how Humans communicated. Fortunately, it was an easy-to-decode sound-based language, allowing for quick translation. The twenty most influential governments on Aegyn, which all existed on Yoasobi, would be contacted in their dominant language. While it took quite a lot of explaining to get them to understand their place as the new subjects of a galactic empire, they would eventually accept. Sedrua held Olaris, as Zaphenim's throne, in high regard and thus treated Humans with slightly more respect than was afforded to their other conquests.

According to legend, one leader refused to cooperate unless Sedrua proved who they were by granting their wish. Their wish was to have "unlimited material to finish their monuments." Sedrua secured an asteroid for the planet, processed it, and placed it into orbit around Aegyn. Each government received a set allotment of resources that would fall from the sky periodically. Convinced by Sedrua's true dominance over the universe, every nation declared loyalty. The flag of Sedrua flew over every capital as per the deal. Their religions abandoned, Aegyn's nations converted to Sedrua's Aeternalism.

Rise of Anthrovia
Rise of Anthrovia
After the twenty civilizations achieved peace, prosperity, and unlimited resources, they would dominate their regions with their monopoly on material, technology, and infrastructure. Every conceivable resource became common. Gold lost all value, food became plentiful as rock phosphates fertilized fields, and there was no shortage of labor. Immense megastructures composed of what were then considered exotic materials, namely steel and aluminum, sprung up across the land. Vast temples, palaces, cities, and complexes emerged even on distant continents. With an infinite supply of material came infinite lust for growth.

The twenty civilizations eventually merged, creating a continent-spanning empire called "Anthrovia" meaning "land of the Humans." This sprawling nation had a single king and dozens of lesser lords beneath them. Beyond the largest continent, the so-called "barbarians" ruled. The smaller island nations remained independent due to the still-limited ship building technology. Despite their best efforts, they would never receive resources from Sedrua, forcing them to mine for their own. These so-called barbarians would remain technologically on par with the main continent. Any advancement made quickly spread to even the most distant islands.

In 5930, the Triumvirate Civilization sent an expeditionary force into Helyar, taking it from Sedrua while it was busy with theSedrua-Quartet War. The force destroyed Sedrua's stations around Aegyn. As they noticed the populace loyal to Sedrua on the ground, they informed them of their new leaders. The Triumvirate drafted a treaty in which humans would gain sovereignty over their whole system in exchange for absolute allegiance. Even though the Humans had no way to travel through space or understand the world around them, they signed the treaty out of fear of losing their resources. Anthrovia became a province within the Triumvirate.

However, the Triumvirate embraced a laissez-faire policy when it came to its possessions. If they paid their taxes, they could rule however they saw fit. With Aegyn's taxes being less than half a ton of gold and a kiloton of grain, the Triumvirate did not profit from occupation. The reason it took this world was to prevent Sedrua from developing it, and keeping its claim meant a constant military presence. Thus, most of the tribute went back into Aegyn to build a space port called the Garrison. More a landing site for Magi and low-tech space craft, the garrison became the only stable governance on Aegyn. It had a population of less than a million who were mostly Humans from Aegyn itself, although sometimes Humans from Eos would filter in.

Era of Magocracy
The countryside magi anticipated this. With control over Aegyn established, some went to Olaris, but most went to punish their colonies for siding with the Triumvirate. A bloody interstellar battle began. Moonmoon's esoteric magi helped where they could, but most were out and about gathering the remains of Sedruan and Triumvirate craft to salvage. The human worlds soon began copying them, creating one of the first salvage economies and very soon after a piracy economy.

As Petra's monarchy surrendered to Aegyn's numerous magi, and Albedo became embroiled with a fight against Sedrua, Thalsiedeln was left alone to stand against them. Thalsiedeln wanted to show the magi that technology had already replaced them. This war was just the magi throwing a tantrum. Thalsiedeln launched an interstellar barrage, advanced even by Triumvirate and Sedruan standards, all the way to Aegyn. Over five percent of its territory became brightly glowing magma, and an additional five percent was softly glowing irradiated fields. The nuclear bomb spelled the end of the magus monopoly on the weaponized atom. The magi continued fighting from spacecraft, but it was clear that they had already lost. The ensuing induced winter killed most of the countryside and even hurt the cities.

The Triumvirate Returns
The Triumvirate Returns
The Great Intendancy was the Triumvirate's police force, established shortly before the war but never deployed to Aegyn. As soon as they were able, they launched an assault on all human worlds. On Aegyn, they rounded up everyone involved in the civil war, esoteric, classical, and non-magus alike. While they faced stiff resistance, their Paladins proved far more skilled than Aegyn's simple Magi. In 6103, the Triumvirate had full control over the smoldering pile of ash that was Aegyn. They blamed the Alecisists for causing their own genocide and continued persecuting them. While not outright slaughtering them, this betrayal was the last nail in the coffin. In 6105, much to the relief of governments across Aylathiya, the esoteric magi left on what everyone thought was a suicide mission to Azurullya. With this, order could return and Aegyn could be rebuilt.

Using the concessions they wrung out of Sedrua, the Triumvirate built up its worlds once more. The Triumvirate invested heavily in Aegyn. The vast cities and megastructures continued expanding as they were repaired, slowly creating a planet-wide "Anthrov City." Aegyn's population leveled out several years after the war at 43 billion, with the creation of domes on airless worlds preventing further growth. Instead, people would simply leave Aegyn to start a new life on new worlds. After advances in medicine raised the average lifespan to 200 years, Aegyn's population exploded as death became far less common. This sudden increase led to many colonists leaving the planet as it became increasingly crowded. Space habitats increased in number during this time.

As the Triumvirate reformed to the Triune Republic, Aegyn and Olaris received a state of their own, simply called Aegyn. Aegyn's government, now with far broader self-governing powers, invested heavily in settling the worlds of Helyar. Aegyn's senators, along with the senators from other human worlds, pushed for additional rights, eventually allowing Aegyn to field its own military. Without oversight from the Triumvirate government, Aegyn's military conquered the rest of Helyar, including the Kyan state on Vyllurian.

Over one trillion people resided on Aegyn by 7500. After another century, Aegyn's growth resulted in over 2 trillion souls occupying the planet. Such a large population lived in massive cities and orbital habitats artificially lit by fusion reactors. Large numbers of humans migrated from Aegyn to surrounding star systems. As the Triumvirate rocketed towards collapse, Aegyn would enjoy steady economic growth and a vast productive capability. Even as the civilization collapsed, Aegyn's prosperity remained.

In 8441, Erstes Konsortium emerged as Human organizations from across the Triumvirate banded together to preserve their interests. Aegyn would be the capital of this new nation. The new order was quite different, however. The leader of Erstes Konsortium, the Kaiser, would allow independent organizations to maintain order across Erstes Konsortium in exchange for joint sovereignty over the territory. Since the Kaiser directly controlled the population centers, this would result in a mutually beneficial deal for worlds across the Kaiser's domain. Normalcy soon returned as Aegyn continued to trade with nations such as the Core Worlds Alliance.

Aegyn remained under the control of the Kaiser until 8875 when the Gran Rubedo shelled the planet, killing the Kaiser. Gran Rubedo moved the capital to Albedo, stealing Aegyn's privileged position. While still the locus of much trade, the Party would soon blockade the world to starve out remaining loyalists. Most of the population fled this genocidal attack. After only a century, the decimated population halved. When the Rubedans ended their blockade, Aegyn's economy was in ruins.

Aegyn's oceans occupy over 80% of the planet's surface. Before the Great Empyreal Crusade, the figure was 65%. The planet's original continents of Yoasobi, Aimer, Rin, Ninelie, Oxt, and Ayaka have all since been buried by Aegyn's once-great ecumenopolis.

When Aegyn began falling into disrepair, various sections of the continental shelf had sunk below sea level, flooding many of the cities. Unchecked plant growth began overtaking much of its infrastructure. When Martial Space recovered from the Great Empyreal Crusade, most of the planet was uninhabitable. The regular bombardment razed all but the sturdiest buildings and drastically increased sea levels. The original continents have all flooded, leaving only artificial structures poking out of the waves. The bombardment killed most native life, eliminating all but a handful of native species.

What remains of the "land" is mostly sandbars made up of smoothed shards of metal, plastic, rock, and other common substances. The largest of these islands manage to house limited ecosystems made of genetically modified or foreign species. Few animals live in these environments. Aegyn's oceans are devoid of multicellular life; pollutants have long since rid them of complex food chains.

History

Prehistoric Era

Aegyn first formed 4.9 billion years ago and first hosted life 4.0 billion years ago. The life remained as simple microbes until 1.2 billion years when the first complex cells arrived.

By 300 CE, several million lived on Aegyn, and a smaller loyal number resided on Olaris.

Civilization reemerged on the continent Herzland in about 5009. These civilizations started as small city-states surrounded by farmland. Throughout the centuries, they became sprawling empires with writing systems, an advanced grasp of mathematics, and territory taking up the whole continent. Around this time, they began spreading out from their home continent in the first ocean-faring vessels. They first colonized the continent Aimer, a northerly continent cooler than Herzland. They went on to colonize the other four major land masses of Rin, Ninelie, Vochtigland, and Ayaka. These landmasses, more accurately described as large islands, were colonized in a lifetime.

Those living in Herzland discovered iron in 5500. Around this time, scouts from Sedrua encountered humankind. Wasting no time, they rushed home to report their discovery. Within the year, Sedrua's linguists began the arduous task of translation. The twenty most influential governments on Aegyn, which all existed in Herzland, would be contacted in their dominant language. While it took quite a lot of explaining to get them to understand their place as the new subjects of a galactic civilization, they would eventually accept. Sedrua held Olaris, as Zaphenim's throne, in high regard and thus treated Humans with slightly more respect than was afforded to their other conquered subjects.

After the twenty Herzland civilizations achieved peace, prosperity, and unlimited resources, they would dominate their regions with their monopoly on material, technology, and infrastructure.

The birth of Moonmoon in 5969 began a new era on Aegyn. Within the next few centuries, the practice of Thaumaturgy became common. While most civilizations gained access to Thaumaturgy well after having the science to explain it, Humanity could not parse this strange new phenomenon. Moonmoon's new religion, Alecisism, giving glory to a being called Silverstar, would rapidly gain popularity as well. With Thaumaturgy came a new class of people, the Magi. Without much interference from the Triumvirate garrison, the magi conquered Aegyn and replaced its government.

Given their vast magical power, subjugating the free societies across the world became a simple task. Space travel also became possible. Rather than paying the garrison exorbitant fees to use their spacecraft, the magi simply countered Aegyn's gravity with their magic. Olaris was the first target of colonization; it became a penal colony. The undisturbed indigenous people of Olaris resisted fiercely. Unlike on Aegyn, Humans on Olaris maintained the Thaumic arts. Hundreds of thousands of Aegan commoners died during the colonization of Olaris.

By 6050 CE, a new form of Thaumaturgy emerged on Aegyn, Esoteric Thaumaturgy. Created by Moonmoon and his followers, Esoteric Thaumaturgy rapidly spread across Aylathiya along with his new religion. This new religion gave answers during the complicated and stressful time of industrialization. Not just Aegyn but the entire Triumvirate adopted new technology. The Three began building factories across the nation, regardless of what the native population wanted. To incentivize labor, they would pay endeavoring employees in scrip exchangeable at any military garrison for food. The people of Aegyn had a hard time adapting to this new way of doing things; millions of farmers migrated to cities, millions converted to new religions, and those in power now had to contend with this new way of doing things.

The magus ruling class was threatened by every single one of these advances. Their hereditary system of fiefs ruled by a single magus did not fit with the new system. What added salt to the wound was the mass adoption of a new religion. What The Three decided to do next was similar to attempting disinfecting a wound by introducing new bacteria to out-compete the pathogens already there.

Era of Theocracy

In 6071 CE, Titania founded Ibaradism, the new official religion of the Triumvirate. The Three were very divided on whether or not to implement it, but Titania, with a full third of the budget under her control, sent missionaries to every world she could. Aegyn gained a fairly sizeable Rorran population as tens of thousand of evangelists descended upon the planet. The garrison commander required that all soldiers become practicing Ibaradists. The religion placed emphasis on divinity over the sovereignty of the many.

The Magi ruling class resisted from the countryside while Alecisists simply drew parallels between Ibaradism and their own faith. Another set of gods does not threaten their belief system like it did the traditional beliefs on Aegyn. The rise of privately-owned business, all paying a small fee to the Garrison to operate, further alienated the countryside. Unlike modern corporations, who are owned by many people, these first companies were more like hereditary monarchies owning property instead of land.

Anthrovian Civil War

In 6088 CE, Sedrua invaded the Triumvirate, triggering the Sedrua-Triumvirate War. Most garrison forces left the system to defend more valuable worlds like D'Naevium and Gohbrin, leaving the bitter countryside magi free from oversight. Their first action, invading the cities. Over the decades, they accumulated disaffected radicals in the cities; anti-Triumvirate types that sought to abandon modernity for the old ways. Every halfway decent magus on Aegyn, save for those of the Esoteric variety, began their slaughter. Alecisist places of worship and businesses could not withstand the radioactive lightning the magi wielded.

The cities did not back down, Esoteric Magi and a large non-magus force struck back. The centuries since the garrison made civil war impossible saw great technological advancement, including the invention of the firearm. Fast-moving rounds could threaten careless magi on the battlefield. While Magi throughout Cosmoria have dealt with these weapons before, Aegyn's magi were inexperienced. They decided to destroy every factory they could; when the Garrison's skeleton force protested, their several dozen magi could not defend them from the hoard from Aegyn's countryside.

What could possibly prevent the systematic slaughter of Alecisists? Hiding underground while either: 1) waiting for the Triumvirate to come back or 2) accumulating enough spacecraft to leave. No one ever considered the third option—Aegyn's children. Aegyn had spread colonists to three worlds outside of the Helyar system: Petra, Thalsiedeln, and Albedo. When the war began, the Triumvirate abandoned these worlds' garrisons as well. Petra developed a global monarchy, Thalsiedeln a council of republics, and Albedo a radical Ibaradist Theocracy. None of these worlds had an interest in letting Aegyn, their largest trading partner and source of food, de-industrialize.

Over two percent of its territory became brightly glowing magma, and an additional five percent was softly glowing irradiated fields. The nuclear bomb spelled the end of the magus monopoly on the weaponized atom. The magi continued fighting from spacecraft, but it was clear that they had already lost. The ensuing induced winter killed most of the countryside and even hurt the cities.

The Triumvirate Returns

The vast cities and megastructures continued expanding as they were repaired, slowly creating a planet-wide "Anthrov City." Aegyn's population leveled out several years after the war at twenty billion, with the creation of domes on airless worlds preventing further growth in favor of exporting population outward. After advances in medicine raised the average lifespan to 200 years, Aegyn's population exploded as death became far less common. This sudden increase led to many colonists leaving the planet as it became increasingly crowded. Space habitats increased in number during this time.

Imperial Triumvirate Rule

Aegyn continued developing under the guidance of the Triumvirate. The Three had comfortable dominance over most of Aylathiya. The fracturing of Sedrua only solidified this fact.

Triumvirate Republican Era

As the Triumvirate reformed to the Triune Republic, Aegyn and Olaris received a state of their own, simply called Aegyn. Aegyn's government, now with far broader self-governing powers, invested heavily in settling the worlds of Helyar. Aegyn's senators, along with the senators from other human worlds, pushed for additional rights, eventually allowing Aegyn to field its own military. Without oversight from the Triumvirate government, Aegyn's military conquered the rest of Helyar, including the Kyan state on Vyllurian.

Over thirty billion people resided on Aegyn by 7500. After another century, Aegyn's growth resulted in over forty billion souls occupying the planet.

Post-Collapse Era

Modern reconstruction has begun only recently.

Geography

Aegyn's oceans occupy over 80% of the planet's surface. Before the Great Empyreal Crusade, the figure was 65%. The planet's original continents of Herzland, Aimer, Rin, Ninelie, Vochtigland, and Ayaka have all since been buried by Aegyn's once-great ecumenopolis.

Most of the ocean's inhabitants are bacteria that adapted to the polluted seas or genetically modified algae. Several newly-created artificial islands house the newest wave of colonists.

Native Microbes

A native biosphere of microbes, the Aegocharia, emerging from an independent abiogenesis event 4.0 billion years ago and remain common on Aegyn. Humans brought these microbes with them the universe over, making it one of the most prominent domains. They are based on water and carbon and independently evolved photosynthesis. Many of Aegyn's ponds and lakes are a deep blue, far bluer than normal water on a sunny day, thanks to this life. They take advantage of a blue-colored alternative to chlorophyll, which, while less efficient, allows them to thrive around orange stars where green plants often fare worse.

Civilization

Aegyn is notoriously hard to govern. Many criminals and organizations reside in the vast underground catacombs carved by ancient Anthrovia. The planet had become a haven for criminal cells, rogue artificial intelligence, and even terrorist organizations. Unsavory groups inhabited nearly every ruin on the surface. During the late War of the Ancients, the Confederacy of Borealis would release war criminals, deserters, and certain prisoners of war onto Aegyn. This practice continued well beyond the War of the Ancients until the 9800's. Aegyn's isolated position and lack of resources made it the natural choice for disposing of inconvenient individuals without outright killing them.

Since the creation of the Helyar Reconstruction Committee, Aegyn has become far more orderly. Modern corporations and cooperatives come face to face with Aegyn's bands and guilds. The result is high economic disparity between new arrivals and the native population.
