The Templaros are a rarity amongst intelligent life, not only for being a synthetic race but also for being a protist. The kingdom protista, through panspermia, had colonized hundreds of worlds, but has deigned to evolve intelligence only once. Where the mammals produce conscious beings in every other order, the Hyaleans, Plazmoans, and other kingdoms have evolved intelligence as well. Save for kingdom monera, the protists never had the chance to evolve intelligence on their own. That was, until, the discovery of Ulviroastrapeorionis morpheus.
Because Templars are unable to reproduce in a typical sense and are incapable of Darwinian evolution many scientists consider them to not be alive.

U. morpheus is a species of algae who, like many in its order, exhibits cooperation. Existing somewhere between a colony organism and a plant, U. morpheus created volumes of water, usually in puddles or sectioned-off portions of lakes and rivers, in which the colony resided. In the unique evolutionary history of the species, it had developed the means to use Thaumaturgy, and the required consciousness needed to sustain it. For brief periods, the colony would wake up, use its magic to kill passing fauna, and slowly feed on the remains. These heterotrophs, gaining energy from both sunlight and predation, became widespread around the Metaisochona region of Eos.
Origin
In 124673, an interstellar drug lord from the Os Templários gang decided that he didn't trust human guards, instead wanting robotic ones. He ordered his chief engineer to create about 20 robots to guard his palace.

U. hecate is a synthetic variant of U. morpheus, awake for half the time rather than briefly as in nature. The result is massively increased metabolism and nutritional needs, but in modern society, this represents no issue. U. hecate, by itself, would hardly be able to function, but through the use of a custom-made robotic shell, U. hecate has become a widespread intelligent species going by the common name Templaros.
After three weeks, the engineer came back to the drug lord with two robots. These robots were modeled after the Knight's Templar. These robots had an external exoskeleton of aluminum armor with internal motors, gyroscopes, computers, and sensors to control movement. The prototypes were somewhat proficient at combat.

Robotic Shell
The drug lord, pleased with the success, ordered further development on the prototypes. The robots were able to take down an unarmed human with ease as they were made of a super strong titanium alloy.
The Templaros were originally weapons of war, created to bolster the dwindling ranks of Magi in Gran Rubedo. They had long since left this role, now free to customize their shells as cultures evolved. The bipedal robot remains the most convenient body plan for the Templaros, especially those trying to fit into a bipedal society, and remains widely available. Numerous quasi-governmental organizations, representing various Templaro nations and groups, create large numbers of shells and the parts for them.

In poorer areas, the Templaros had hardly changed since their inception, some even uncovered and raided old Rubedan depots to get parts on the cheap. In large cities, the Templaros are as diverse as robots can be. Whether embracing a minimalist design exposing themselves to direct sunlight or covering themselves in layers of armor, Templaros generally make sure to be identifiable as Templaros rather than mere machines. This not only make them safer, but also allows them to identify one another.
Within two years after the commission, the drug lord's palace was guarded with these somewhat hollow suits of armor. Pleased with the success of these robots, the drug lord ordered hundreds more to be made and even built a factory. He had them deployed as guards for transports, factories, and drug facilities.

Biology
Although the robots were considered exceptional guards, they were quite useless on uneven terrain. They were also unable to adapt to rapidly evolving situations or in situations where a loss of contact happened. Noticing this, the drug lord decided that he needed a force of elite robots, ones that could not only act as guard, but ones that could assassinate enemies or even conquer rival gangs. He subsequently ordered his engineer to create another group of similar robots with human-level intelligence, increased mobility, and skill. After ten years of development, the first one of these intelligent robots was made.
The Templaros are a part of the order Ulvoeumetacles, occupying the same class as various seaweeds and multicellular aquatic species. Other relatives include more common single-celled salt and freshwater algae. The order itself is quite the lonely one, with only a handful families and a total of ten genera total. U. morpheus and U. hecate are the only species in their genus and family.

U. morpheus takes on the form of a dense cloud of identical algae, which constitute a diffuse brain. Electrical signals and hormones propagate through the algae coordinated by certain helper cells functioning as an immune and digestive system. Every so often, the helper cells coordinate a twenty-fold increase in density, contracting the algae into a clump about the size of a fist. This clump, now much more capable of thought, was far too energy-hungry to sustain for long periods. It's one advantage is the ability to use thaumaturgy. To hunt, they release small bursts of heat, light, and radiation, a potent weapon used even in modern warfare. A byproduct of this congregation is sapience, but as fundamentally asocial beings, they exist without language. U. morpheus experiences this sapience like a dream, a means to use magic rather than an end itself.
The second generation Templar's were capable of holding an intelligent conversation with a human, operating for long periods of time without contact, and even lasting years without a charge. They had quantum computers in their chests for processing at a human level intelligence. Each one was even given its own random personality just as a nice touch.

U. hecate was heavily modified to understand a fundamental concept, "other." Mating only took place between gametes or asexually and was autonomous, meaning that U. morpheus had no concept of the importance of others. It was quite easy to coax U. hecate into a social existence. The first batches were raised quite like children, without the knowledge to control their synthetic exoskeletons or interact with their peers. As they learned to value one another, manipulate the environment, and most importantly follow orders, they soon proved a terrifying force. Their behavior came across as strange, their movements uncanny, and their straightforward communication style disconcerting.
Happy with the success of this, the drug lord ordered hundreds. He had them assassinate many rival gang leaders and Os Templários became the most powerful gang in the Confederacy. Even politicians were being intimidated by the ever-growing hoard of self-aware knights controlled by Os Templários.

The formative years of a new Templaro is very important. If they remain alone, they tend to prefer solitary existences hunting for their food. They never master language as well. Without access to an exoskeleton, they never develop the means to intuitively control one, leading to delayed or permanently stunted motor skills. Locomotion and language are not an intrinsic parts of their biology, but something that must be built from the ground up.
Growing more bold, the gang began to rent out the knights as a paramilitary group. They began to use them in conjunction with the non-self aware knights to conquer entire planets. By this time, Os Templários was becoming a legitimate threat to the well being of the Confederacy. By 125000, over ninety percent of the gang were robots as the gang were mass producing millions of them. They were even given specialized roles. Some were designed to be pilots, others guards, and others to be ground soldiers.

Multiple governments, mostly associations of Templaros, fund the creation of new Templaros as well as their schools. For the first ten years of life, they usually stay close to mature Templaros, not parents but mentors who volunteer to raise the next generation. After this crucial developmental period, the Templaro has learned enough to enter the world as an individual. This is considered "adulthood," and, although the degree of neural plasticity declines after this point, maturity is a life-long process. The oldest Templaros, some reaching nearly 300 years, mastered communication and motor skills beyond most other species.
After two hundred years, the older robots began to question their purpose. They questioned why they had to do the work without being paid. They questioned why they were treated as expendable. They even questioned the authority of the drug lord himself and the legitimacy of the gang. They slowly started to stop working. They had no incentive to serve a corrupt drug lord. They slowly stopped guarding. Instead, they pursued what interested them. Some took an interest in science, others enjoyed literature or the arts, and others were intrigued with philosophy.

After years of all of the self-aware robots becoming less useful, the drug lord ordered them all to be reset back to normal. By this time, the Templar's viewed themselves as more than just things, considering themselves as equals to humans. They knew now that the drug lord viewed them as objects to be exploited. In an act of the ultimate slave uprising, the now three billion Templar's easily overthrew the gang, killing all human aspects of the gang. They put in a petition to the Confederacy of Humanity for an independent state which was quickly denied. The robots decided that this was a betrayal, and believed they deserved an independent state.

They took many starships previously owned by the gang and flew to Bode's galaxy (a galaxy with no human presence at all). After getting to the galaxy, they set up a nation-state named after their former gang. The name was Templaria, and they named their race the Templars.

Anatomy
The Templars are very similar to hollow suits of armor. They were initially made of a high strength titanium alloy, but in the years since their independence they've developed lighter and stronger neutronium alloy based armor. In their chest cavity is a highly advanced quantum computer running a human level intelligence. There is a smaller quantum computer in the head of a Templar which interprets the large amounts of sensory input into the Templar.

They are humanoid with two arms, two legs, and have five digits on each hand, but none on either foot. Underneath the armor, a layer of kevlarite chainmail exists as further protection. Their outer armor is not a continuous sheet of armor but is made of many sheets connected with joints.

In their head, they typically have holes carved were a human would have a mouth, and slits for its optical sensors.

It is impossible to actually "put on" a Templar. Even if they were hollowed out, their joints are not configured for a human to move, as they do not have any of the joint limitations that humans have.

In order to be more like humans, each Templar was fitted with deep-seated emotions which cannot be defied by the computers. This was to try and get the Confederacy to accept them as intelligent life, but it did not work initially.

Around forty-five percent of Templars are "female." Although all Templars are androgynous in nature, some of them have the "female" model. This was put in place to relate more to humans. No functional difference exists between "male" and "female" templars except for "female" Templars are usually slightly shorter and speak with a higher pitched voice.
Culture
Templars consider themselves equal to humans. Calling a Templar a robot, android, machine, or referring to them as "it" will immediately result in extreme rage. They prefer to be called by the correct term "Templar" or their actual name. Referring to them as "it" is the most enraging thing one could do, instead one should refer to them as either "he" or "she" based on their armor model.

They speak a mixture of Portuguese and English called Templarish. A person who could speak both Portuguese and English could understand most of what they say if they spoke slowly.

Although weapons such as swords have long since been rendered obsolete, many Templars still use them for traditional purposes such as duels. A common practice among them is to take portraits with their swords in hand.

Templars are constantly trying to be more like humans, in order to prove they are worthy of being deemed intelligent. They do not actually grow up though. Once they are produced at the factory, they are implanted with a randomly generated personality and name and are fully mature form then on.
