Aakaash, officially the Charted Kingdom of Aakaash, is a major power controlling a set of several systems in the Elerad region of Florathel. Aakaash is the primary nation of Cheshvans and Kataomo within Cosmoria, and plays a key role in modern international politics as a founding member of the United Nations of Florathel.

Its various component states rose from the ruins of the Providence Union during the War of the Last Alliance. The three stars that comprise this nation each had a smattering of petty stations and juntas. The first to conquer this area bared the name Illua, hence the modern name. While various different powers, from republics to dynasties, controlled these stars, a common throughline unites this phases into one national history. In recent years, Aakaash was finally stable enough to turn its focus outward to galactic politics. It has proven itself quite the powerful state both militarily and economically.

Its has two capital worlds, Lotkemi and Ua La Raga. It was uniquely created by the peaceful union of two states of different species, and stands to this day as a shining example of what peaceful cooperation can achieve. Full syncretization of the two cultures, the result of thousands of years of cohabitation, contributes greatly to this lasting peace and strength.

History

Initial Founding

Aakaash was one of the "natural unions" studied in Florathel's history. It modern territory lies within the Elerad-Morid Interest Zone of the Providence Union. This region, forcibly homogenized in language, religion, and culture over one thousand years, bolstered the Union's control of Elerad. Much of the Union's factories and military power was concentrated in the region and, as the Union fell, various generals or admirals seized what could be had. For a brief period, Exalted Admiral Ghao Boa La ruled the entity of the ELerad-Morid Zone and even had plans to reunited the broader empire. However, Admiral Ghao's rule was short-lived and the region fell into chaos.

The various powers, mostly juntas, warred with one another for the resources to keep their factories running and their fusion reactors firing. Loss of either meant a stronger neighbor would emerge. Some experimented with Military Democracy, sourcing decisions from the populace (which, at the time, was every single person). This period was called the Warring Generals Period and its legacy has forever changed the course of Aakaash's history.

The Kingdom of Illua was the first polity to reunify the region and did so over the reign of three monarchs. This put an end to the idea of generals and admirals, replacing them with warring kinds but doing little to change the political order. Technological development slowed to a crawl and in many cases reverted. Fusion reactors remained common, for example, but personal electronics regressed substantially. Computers became larger and tougher as well, as the various warring factions preferred reliability to elegance.

Kingdom of Elerad-Aakaash

The nobility enjoyed the high technology from foreign powers such as the Triumvirate Civilization, but its collapse greatly disrupted Florathel. This shock, like a mass extinction event, spurred evolution in governance and civics. In this case, prompting Ua La Raga to replace Lotkemi as the center of Elerad. Its rulers, with no blood relation to those on Lotkemi, claimed the title of Aakaash anyways. This kingdom remained in place for centuries, the capital changing multiple times. Even as the dynasties broke and reformed, Aakaash would always reemerge. The word "Aakaash" came to not only mean the region but the very notion of sovereignty. The modern name, the Chartered Kingdom of Aakaash literally means "The Charted Kingdom of Universal Sovereignty." Of course, leaving "Aakaash" untranslated goes over better in diplomatic relations.

An insidious force came from the Tchernaya region of Florathel. The merchant class, once oppressed and barely capable of earning a living on the margins, suddenly grew in power. They organized, either buying out local lords or outright toppling them. Thus the kingdom, centered on Lotkemi during this time, had to make a decision. Letting these merchants run amok was believed to be a great threat to those in power. This decision would have been a disaster for the region, were it not for the collapse of Tchernaya's worlds in the Tripartite War. Aakaash had the chance to catch up and catch up it did.

The Quorum of Aldyren

During the War for Arachtea, the King wasted millions of lives putting down rebellions in the Arachtea system. With his ships caught up in that conflict, the various nobles took the chance to express their grievances. By that point, the nobility had grown to despise the king, hating their taxes, their constant warfare, and the king's ability to seize whatever he desired. The War for Arachtea became the War for Charter as the nobility rebelled. The highest ranking nobles sided with the king, but low-ranking officials, such as those ruling cities, seized factories and starve royal fleets.

The result was the Quorum of Aldyren, a meeting place of the ten thousand nobles that now ruled the nation. Rather than descending into warfare once more, they took the king's authority for themselves. Now, to do much of anything, the king would need their approval. The government remained mostly centralized, however, and the king and the quorum entered into an uneasy balance.

As the king lost ever more power, their title became the "Crowned Prince" and politics stabilized. With the quorum's Chairman becoming the de facto leader of the nation, Aakaash began to rapidly liberalize. The petty nobles gave way to land owners in the gradual, and often bloody, process. The peasantry put up a surprising amount of resistance to this new system, but ultimately failed to keep things as they were. Aakaash became a modern constitutional federal monarchy by 9600 CE which it remains to this day.
