Gacrux (pronounced /ɡeɪkrəks/) is a red giant in the Helios Region of Vangelia. It is home to 6.8 million people, who are found primarily in the star's 11-planet system. The local capital is Edneria, a city on the temperate desert moon of Valina.

As the Union of Vangelia expanded, Gacrux was ignored in favor of stars better suited for human habitation. In the 43rd century CE, criminals began to establish outposts across the system, their operations easily attracting workers desperate for a source of income. Over the years, the outposts evolved into settlements, increasing the risk of government scrutiny. To evade it, Gacrucian crime lords ran complex money laundering schemes, remaining safe until their empire was violently shut down in the 58th century CE. Despite the countless violations of their rights, the workers of Gacrux often felt a stronger sense of community than their civic counterparts.

In the decades leading up to the Vangelian Civil War, Gacrux fell into disrepair. The central government had dismantled so much of the system's infrastructure that most of its inhabitants left in search of alternatives. After the Union was overthrown, descendants of Gacrucian underworld workers requested that the star be resettled. New facilities, intended to autonomize the economy and satisfy basic needs, were built around Gacrux in the 64th century CE, causing its population and living conditions to regrow.
