Martial Space is a multi-species international union occupying much of Aylathiya near the galactic core. The region is named for the deity Mars, a widely-revered figure in the region's most prominent religions. The most common faith, Martial Civil Religion, was official state doctrine until recently following mounting pressure to secularize. Today, the Greater Martial Consilium is meant to be religiously neutral, despite the spear iconography on its flag. The head of the Consilium and ruler of Martial Space, the Imperator, is the voice of Mars, and therefore its people. "Mars Martialis Spatio es, populo es, gensa es"—"Mars is Martial Space, its people, its nation." |
Over the centuries, the role of the Imperator had been the subject of much debate. So intense was the debate that nations would take up arms, often when something could be gained from doing so of course. The Warring States Period, emerging as the Dominion of Astraeus collapsed, was replete with warfare. At the time, Mars was believed to embody the state—which state exactly was up to the outcome of warfare. These states were absolute monarchies, impossible to unify and impossible to develop. |
Martial Space is an astropolitical region of space near to the core of Via Aylathiya with various definitions. Some consider Martial Space to be a political bloc where Mars is considered to be a shared head of state while others believe that Martial Space is a more physical region defined by its proximity to Mars' home world, Scipio. With a population of about 125 quintillion, Martial Space has been an important player both economically and militarily for tens of thousands of years. Continually inhabited for well over 200,000 years, the region is noticeably dimmer than the rest of Via Aylathiya, with many of its stars harvested into oblivion, many of its planets stripped of material, and even its interstellar dust noticeably less dense. |
The Wars of Unification, in which the Republic of Drusidia grew to dominate first Eos and then the dozen nearest stars, was a centuries-spanning process. At its height in 9721, the Republic controlled most of modern Martial Space. The Republic's voracious conquest was fueled entirely by nascent reindustrialization in its core of Enyo. The Republic could simply outproduce, outgun, and outnumber any of its neighbors. To this day, the city of Enyo is the wealthiest in Martial Space and the capital of the Consilium. |
The concept of Martial Space dates back to around the 30,000s CE as the nations of this region began much of their histories. Needing a way to refer to the new nations forming in this region, many nations adopted the term "Martial Space." |
The last war of unification ended right as the War of the Ancients began. The ancient superpower, the Commonwealth of Post-Sedruan States launched a religious crusade against the Republic. Its rusted factories roared to life as per government decree. The resulting war involved every major power in Aylathiya and was ultimately a republic victory. Drusidian generals and politicians rushed to divide the newly acquired lands, threatening the relatively centralized Republic. They demanded political power in the Consilium, its legislature, and threatened succession without it. |
The region was first colonized well before the common era by numerous ancient civilizations. The Triumvirate Civilization, based in Martial Space, would be the first civilization to unite the region under its control. Ruling from the Ventemir nebula, their control of the region was near absolute for nearly 100,000 years. With the fall of the Triumvirate Civilization came an emergence of dozens of native civilizations such as Rune-Err, Florenta, and Leviathan. Martial Space would change forever when the Neo-Terrans, a group of far right Human extremists, would settle the region. Taking over already existing mega-structures and worlds, they quickly spread to become a great influence over the region. It was first united in the Neo-Terran Co-Prosperity Sphere before collapsing as the various species had disagreements. Its feudal order would emerge shortly after, the various duchies, margraviates, and other divisions established and became hereditary. This coagulation of the noble class marks the beginning of Martial Space as we know it. |
Jezebel's War, fought first by Archon Jezebel Torrent-Drusus and then by Imperatrix Jezebel, erupted to suppress the growing calls for reform. The new territories joined the disgruntled countryside aristocracy, remnants of the Dominion of Astraeus, and other groups seeking to end the Consilium system. Jezebel's death left a power vacuum in Enyo. Imperatrix Wren, then General Wren Zandria, organized an emergency conference with provincial governors. An impromptu vote over radio cemented the creation of the Greater Martial Consilium. The rank of each "allod," essentially a state in the Consilium, was intensely argued over in the years-long session of the Consilium. |
==Sub-Regions== |
===Florescence=== |
Florescence is a fairly small region centered around a black hole towards the center of Martial Space. While having the highest metallicity of anywhere in Martial Space, Florescence is still far from the metallicity in, the rest of Via Aylathiya. Life is comparatively rare in the region and even less common in the area around it. Even so, The Ravis and Llæns call this region home. Florescence is controlled by the Boreal Federacy's state of Blumeheim which has drained it of resources, causing it to be dependent on imports to survive. |
In the end, the Consilium represented a far broader segment of society. It became check on the power of the Imperator, complete with its own rival executive branch, the Aurora Commission. The Republic of Drusidia became the central government of a sprawling nation and its various former colonies and provinces became checks on the power of the central government. Martial Space is a super-state and burgeoning federal republic on the cusp of superpower status and far from fully realized. |
As of the current year, Florescence has a population of over 17 quintillion mostly residing around its central black hole Mei'os. At 41 million stars in size, Florescence is small for a galactic region. It is one of the most densely populated regions of space as well as one of the highest valued regions per system. The average system within Florescence is more valuable than those elsewhere, causing it to have one of the highest costs of living in its region. |
====Name==== |
The Ravin name for the region, "Vynos" is best translated as the word, "Florescence." Florescence means, "the process of flowering." The name comes from their region being origin point of their religion. Many believe that their religion will eventually "flower," causing it to spread rapidly among individuals residing outside of Florescence. Originally, the name was more meant to represent how their civilization would colonize the rest of the universe. Once that has proven impossible, The Ravis largely shifted to a more peaceful means of spreading their faith. |
====Astrography==== |
Florescence, while controlled mostly by Blumeheim, is divided in two parts, Ravi-Empyrea and Llæ-Empyrea. Together these two nations make up the two jurisdictions of Blumeheim. The central black hole of Florescence, Mei'os, is the most populous body in the core at almost 500 quadrillion inhabitants within its direct orbit. Other important worlds include Alphos and Yuusha, the home worlds of the Ravis and Llæns respectively. |
== Government == |
Florescence has a very low metallicity, causing life to be very rare within it. While in many galaxies, bacteria-covered worlds are relatively common, Florescence only has one planet known to have naturally evolved life, Alphos. The other planet to have life since antiquity, Yuusha, shows evidence of terraformation, suggesting that the life on its surface is from another world or genetically engineered. |

Main Article: Ventemir |
The government of Martial Space has three branches—The Aurora Commission, the Imperator, and the Greater Martial Consilium. All sovereignty is said to derive from the people, from Mars, and therefore from the Consilium and Imperator. The Consilium represents the people in a practical sense and the Imperator in a spiritual sense. The Aurora Commission is the large bureaucratic apparatus in charge of taxation, public works, and most of the military. |
The second largest nebula within Via Aylathiya, Ventemir represents one of the cradles of civilization therein. Containing over one billion stars within its clouds, Ventemir dwarfs even many proper galaxies within Cosmoria. Ventemir has a diameter of about 13,100 light years and has a total mass of 9 billion <var>M</var>☉. Ventemir is dominated by three nations, the Entente of Ventemir, Tenshi and the Greater Martial Consilium. Tensions between the Tenshi and the other two nations have created a sort of demilitarized zone on their border, dividing the body between its controllers. |
The Imperator, like the Archon of the Republic, has unlimited power save for limitations laid out in the Edict of Decency. The Consilium, through the Aurora Commission, controls taxation, the treasury, and Martial Space's large military, the Ruby Spear. The Imperator commands the much smaller Ruby Shield, essentially an independent military from the capital city, although even the capital is not the sole domain of the Imperator. A group of margraves, elected officials despite their title, rule the capital in a hybrid executive-legislative council with the Imperator. |
Ventemir is primarily populated by Atlins, then Humans, and Orcubor with a small minority of Vexlores and Gainge making up most of the rest. Most of Ventemir's 25 quintillion people live in three megastructures named Gira Gira, Odo, and Hanabi near to its core. The rest of the population lives on various worlds scattered throughout the region. |
=== Allods === |
An Allod is an exception to the fundamental basis of the government of Martial Space, that the Imperator has absolute power as the embodiment of Mars. Despite secularization of the Imperator as a symbolic representation of the people, it remains the case that the Imperator's spiritual significance is a proven historical and scientific fact. Thus, no government would willingly submit to the Imperator unless forced to, which is bad for national cohesion. |
In the center lies three gravitationally dominant bodies named Gira Gira, Odo, and Hanabi. Gira Gira is the strangest among the three as it is a Quasi-star. This body, the most populous within the entirety of Martial Space, has a total luminosity of ten million L☉ . This ridiculous luminosity sterilized the core of Ventemir for most of its history, causing what should be a nebula abounding in life to have only three native sapient life forms. Despite this, Gira Gira has the largest population of the galaxy due to the immense number of orbiting habitats and artificial worlds orbiting the body. Currently, the body is under the control of the Entente, giving it unrivaled power over the core. |
Thus, the complex allod system was created. An allodial claim to land or capital means such land is not owned by the Imperator outright, leaving it free from taxation and the allods free to do as they wish with it. Put simply, an allod is a state within Martial Space, a sovereign unit whose rights ends where the rights of the individual begin. |
Odo is a Birch Planet, meaning a huge artificial construct built around a black hole, where time runs 1% slower than the standard flow of time. Additionally, the escape velocity is 1% of light speed. Consequently, the body is mostly used for industrial procedures rather than actual living as even with advanced technology, the change in acceleration from 0 to 1% of light speed would vaporize most organisms. The only way to accelerate slowly enough to leave the body without instantly dying is to use a nearly astronomical-unit-long rail gun that "slowly" accelerates passengers to 1% light speed only for them to slow down once out of Odo's gravity well. |
Only 5% of the population of Martial Space is subject to direct rule by the Imperator. An interesting side-effect of this stipulation is that the Imperator can only tax inter-allod transactions, companies, or firms. The Greater Martial Consilium has no limit to what it can tax. |
Hanabi is a structure built around one of the only known Magnetars within the region. Since these bodies usually only last for 10,000 years at their incredibly high energy output, continual interference with the body needs to be done. When Hanabi begins to slow down its energy output, a millennia-lasting process begins in which a large ring is built as close as possible to the body. Then, using a captured red dwarf for power, the body is bombarded with gravitational waves that recharge its rotation and increase its mass and magnetic field. While it would be more profitable to simply find another Magnetar, the cultural and political power resting within Hanabi necessitates the maintenance of its energy output. |

===Judiciary=== |
The judiciary is complicated and subject to endless debate. The Imperator has made judgements related to inter-allod conflicts, but this power has not be used in over a century due to the conflict in interest this clearly represents. Thus, inter-allod conflicts are usually overseen by a council of thirteen Special Representatives, seven of which are appointed by the Imperator and six of which are appointed by the president of the Aurora Commission. A series of laws, not found in the edict of decency, govern this Special Council as though it were any other government agency, with the caveat that its decisions must be respected. |
The history of Martial Space has always been directly related to the history of Via Aylathiya. Even more than Via Aylathiya, the history of Martial Space is defined by "Great Actors," individuals whose influence was solely responsible for many historical events. These Great Actors often lead nations or were the embodiment of these nations. Many of these Great Actors were beings known as Engels, meaning that Martial Space's history is "sporadic" with past trends often turned on their heads by these Great Actors. |

===Edict of Decency=== |
Tyranny is a problem Martial Space is well acquainted with—in its history it had been the default. Keeping power spread out helps prevent a central authority from wresting power from nations, planets, and cities, but allows for these local governments to operate without much oversight. It is the divine duty of the Imperator to represent the people, including making sure local governments operate under this manner. Of course, not all allods are operated democratically, far from it. Even so, certain rights are universal as proclaimed by the Edict of Decency, all guaranteed by the largest standing army and navy in the universe. |
The history of Martial Space begins with the manifestation of the Engel known as The Administrator. Upon emerging in about 500,000 BCE, The Administrator found itself alone in its region. All of the few planets with life it found had no intelligent life, just what it deemed self-replicating carbon-based machines. Bored with the region, the Administrator would spend its time researching the fundamental nature of reality. It made great leaps in technology after converting entire star systems into its laboratories. |
Namely, the Edict establishes which species are considered Integrant, having basic rights. Not every integrant is a citizen, as Martial Space as a whole does not have citizens and officially views all beings in its borders as equal before the law. The Allods have various standards for citizenship, but are unable to violate the rights of integrants. |
Still it remained alone in its region devoid of any companionship. At this moment, the Administrator came to the conclusion that it was the only being in all of reality to be truly intelligent, a conclusion that would have ramifications for the next half of a million years. |
*Sole ownership of the self. |
Ohko's Civilization was the first to settle Martial Space. As they moved deeper into Martial Space, they would disturb the Administrator, who assumed that they were unintelligent animals. Its callous disregard for the members of Ohko's Civilization would eventually culminate in a war, called the Ohko-Administrator War in which the Administrator laid waste to their empire. As its self-replicating turned their worlds into resources and The Administrator quickly picked up the art of Thaumaturgy, their civilization collapsed into millions of smaller nations. |
*Sole determination self's parts. |
*Sole propriety of the self's labor. |
*Sole stewardship for one's health. |
*Sole responsibility for contracts. |
*Sole duty to Nature. |
The last point, Sole duty to Nature, is part of the founding principles of the state and does not mean nature as in the plants, animals, or biosphere. Nature, also called Providence, is the entirety of the universe, in particular its sovereign aspects, the people. In other words, Nature is those who reside in it and is indistinguishable from society. All have a duty to society, but only to a society which respects the nature (lowercase n) of intelligent beings. |
=== Setting the Stage === |
After 450,000 BCE, civilization seemed to once again spring up all at once across the galaxy. The Myrkálfar, descendants of the Svartálfar species, would emerge as a distinctive identity in Martial Space around 311,000 BCE. Having broken away from their parent civilization, the Myrkálfar soon developed a vast interstellar civilization spanning much of the region. |
Some allods have more radical charters of their own, such as the Confederacy of Borealis, whose citizens enjoy a host of other rights such as freedom of movement, right to health, and even a wordy right to species instinct so long as the rights of others are not infringed. |
The next civilization to form within Martial Space would be a nation known as Kekkai. This civilization's thoughts and religion seemed to have soon spread to the primitive civilizations all across the region. Their vehemently monotheistic, Administrator-based, faith had an influence on the various civilizations that their missionaries uplifted. The Orcubor, Atlins, and Re'Tlel were highly influenced by them, creating a near galaxy-wide religion dedicated to the veneration of the Administrator. The Administrator itself lost interest in the primitive races of the galaxy, its advanced technology and Thaumaturgic abilities to them appearing as supernatural actions. |
As a minimum, whether an allod is a military dictatorship or a democratic republic, the above rights must be respected. Regularly, the citizens of denizens of these nations will appeal to Nature, meaning they can apply for audience with various star-system-level courts who answer to the Special Representatives who have created a monstrously-large collection of case law and precedent which more accurately defines what the Edict of Decency means. This has made appealing to nature time-consuming and expensive, greatly slowing down the rate at which precedent can change. |
A break-away group of Myrkálfar, being persecuted by the wider religious order of the region for their heresy, fled to an empty corner of the Tloinin nebula. Cornered and nearly exterminated, the group cried out to their goddess, Delyatu, only for an Engel, claiming to be this being, to emerge and push back the invading fleets. The group immediately stopped identifying as Myrkálfar, opting to call themselves Vlanoans instead. From there, they would diverge enough to become a new civilization. |
The second to last point, Sole responsibility for contracts, was an addition popular amongst liberals who believed something like a "right to property" would be important to economic growth. Across the core in Florathel, similar such laws had generated great economic growth. Thus, this law narrowly became a part of the Edict of Decency. Its exact wording remains controversial to this day, but is widely interpreted to mean the right to own property and negotiate legally-binding contracts, including with the government. A lot of weight has been placed on this point, in particular the very basis for the vast body of contracts, treaties, and deals between the allods. |
Other Engels would form after Delyatu, notably Molonov. Spontaneously manifesting on the planet Alphos in about 220,000 BCE, Molonov would begin uniting the various theocracies of the Ravis species, claiming to be a prophet from the "One True God," which he did not name, causing the Ravis to assume that this Engel was speaking in the name of The Administrator. Titania emerged under similar circumstances; however, this Engel was skeptical of the nearly religious devotion that the people of the region had to the Engels. She devoted herself to the unraveling of the mysteries of the Engels and their supernatural powers, which would later be determined to be Runic Thaumaturgy, which is, despite the name, an entirely naturalistic phenomenon. |
A concerning part about this history is that almost everything that is known about it is known through the lens of the Engels or their followers. An objective view of the events described is hard to piece together. Additionally, history is recorded in a third-person omniscient point of view, as though gods were looking down to record information. As such, the historical documents of early Martial Space are usually considered to be "mytho-historical accounts." This begins the pattern in Martial history of great beings vying to gain power over each other with the rest of the region's inhabitants viewed as game pieces whose actions were interpreted from this perspective. From this point, the region entered a state of gridlock as the various Engels and, later, super-intelligences such as The Sovereign, competed with each other. Little changed as even technological advancement slowed to a crawl. Any outsiders entering the region kept to themselves, not wanting to disturb the various entities that called the realm home. |

=== Rise of the Triumvirate === |
In about 100,000 BCE, the Administrator once again began paying attention to the universe it found itself in. The Administrator would release an invitation to every Engel, small theocracy devoted to some Engel or another, and even machine. This invitation was simple; the Administrator offered to share its technology in exchange for fealty. Really, it could not care less about the quintillions that called the region home; its goal was to secure allies amongst the powerful. |
One Engel, Molonov, and one superintelligence, Mahou, responded positively to the invitation. They met on the planet Tryvya to discuss the creation of their united empire. In 99,871 BCE, the three joined together into the Triumvirate Civilization, uniting each of the species they had sway over into provinces. While the Triumvirate would later prove to be among the most formidable civilizations in history, right now it was a non-entity compared to the likes of Sedrua. |
30,000 years later and the galaxy was flipped on its head as Sedrua lost its holdings in Martial Space and near the Borealis Arm to the Triumvirate. This startling upset, triggered by an economic collapse within Sedrua, |

The head of the Consilium and ruler of Martial Space, the Imperator, is the voice of Mars, and therefore its people.
Edict of Decency
Tyranny is a problem Martial Space is well acquainted with—in its history it had been the default. Keeping power spread out helps prevent a central authority from wresting power from nations, planets, and cities, but allows for these local governments to operate without much oversight. It is the divine duty of the Imperator to represent the people, including making sure local governments operate under this manner. Of course, not all allods are operated democratically, far from it. Even so, certain rights are universal as proclaimed by the Edict of Decency, all guaranteed by the largest standing army and navy in the universe.
- Sole ownership of the self.
- Sole determination self's parts.
- Sole propriety of the self's labor.
- Sole stewardship for one's health.
- Sole responsibility for contracts.
- Sole duty to Nature.
Some allods have more radical charters of their own, such as the Confederacy of Borealis, whose citizens enjoy a host of other rights such as freedom of movement, right to health, and even a wordy right to species instinct so long as the rights of others are not infringed.
