Verda, also known as Eka'u, Astlac, and Nakaa by surrounding cultures due to its brightness in the sky, is the primary star of the Verda System. Located in the Vernarca Nebula, the star is at the heart of the Vernarcan Federation. Its planets number among the most influential in the Ervo Sector, particularly the likes of Teralla.

Physical Characteristics

Verda is a young star, formed 1.9 billion years ago in the nascent Vernarca Nebula Seed Cluster, where it still resides. It is a calm G8V-class star, making it . Like most stars, it rotates quite slowly, varying from 21.7 days on the equator to 38.1 days near the polar regions. Its middling surface temperature of ~5490 K causes it to be an off-white color from afar, bathing its planets in bright neutral light and causing the inhabitants of the system to evolve a visible spectrum skewed ever so slightly toward the infrared.

Due to its young age, Verda has a comparatively high metallicity of 1.5%, leading to a lower surface temperature than older and more metal-poor stars of its mass. This was a boon for the civilization which developed on Teralla, allowing them to easily starlift material from their parent star to assemble all manner of habitats, statites, and other orbital infrastructure.

Verda, being a yellow dwarf, is not fully convective, which means that it will not use all of its fuel over its lifetime. This vastly decreases it's lifetime, meaning that in approximately 14 billion years, it will die. It is currently being mined via starlifting to build the habitats in it's nascent dyson swarm.

Orbit and Rotation

Like most stars, Verda rotates quite slowly, varying from 21.7 days on the equator to 38.1 days near the polar regions. Verda and it's secondary companion, Audras, orbit their center of mass at an average distance of 550 AU on a somewhat elliptical orbit, with Taozora orbiting the pair thousands of AUs distant.

History

Prehistory

Formed alongside Audras roughly two billion years ago, Verda quickly coalesced from a large cloud of dust and gas in a nebula, which quickly transformed into a rapidly rotating disk of material as it collapsed. As the cloud compressed and gained heat, light began to effuse from its center, beginning the process of heating up the surrounding gas in the nascent protoplanetary disk.

By the time Verda actually ignited, the vast majority of the mass of the outer disk had coalesced into several gaseous planets, including what would become Glau and Nayeren. Its ignition abruptly drove away all the remaining gas and much of the free-floating dust, cutting off the growth of the outer gas giants and beginning the final stages of the formation of the system. After the planets settled into their (relatively) modern configuration, very little happened to the star for eons. The Qomarat came and went with little more than a few flimsy statites that fell apart within months of the Empire's retreat from the outer galactic ring.

Civilization

Verda was "Discovered" in prehistory, being a giant glowing sphere in the sky, by both the Kesstra and the Alorath. In 1068 BC, The telescope was invented by the Alorath, and someone had the genius idea of looking at the sun with it. He was the first to see the very big sunspots on the star. Not much happened, except solar telescopes getting better, until 499 BC, when a solar telescope was sent into space, and took the clearest pictures yet of the stellar surface.

Colonization

With the coming of the space age and the founding of the Verdan Federation (not to be confused with the Vernarcan Federation which succeeded it), the Alorath began to develop a variety of impressive megastructures surrounding their home star. Resources were mined from Moa and Praxis to assemble the first starlifting array, which then was able to lift metals out of Verda’s atmosphere to build all future megascale engineering projects.

Throughout the long history of both Federations, Verda was never directly affected by war until 141 AC, when the armies of the Alliance of Five nations broke through the Yazera Pact lines and occupied the system. Before the arrival of the Carremmat warships, large swathes of the Habitat Swarm population flicked on warp drives and left for interstellar space, and the system began the occupation with less than a fifth of its peacetime population and large chunks of its infrastructure missing. These acts almost certainly ensured the surviving Vernarcan Federation’s ability to retake the system, by allowing the resistance to survive long enough to help them do so from the inside.

After the Alliance was driven from the system, most of the population returned and life in the center of the Federation mostly returned to normal until the Void’s final offensive in 149-150 AC. While the Voidspears either went inert or overloaded and self-destructed before passing the orbit of Nayeren, the Faledor belt population was greatly depleted as habitats were effortlessly crushed and devoured. After the war ended, Verda’s population has put great effort into helping their neighbors rebuild, and the generational ties between the companion stars remain strong.

Surroundings

Verda is surrounded by a large system of ten planets, two of which exist in binary or pseudo-companion arrangements. Seven are found in the inner system: Moa, Praxis, Vijal, Jevethra, Teralla/Esera, and Rellis – and the remaining three are found past the Kellelai Asteroid Belt: Glau, Nayeren, and Volarus, with Volarus orbiting as a quasisatellite of Nayeren. There are also two primary asteroid belts, the Kellelai Belt between Rellis and Glau, and the Faledor Belt beyond Nayeren and Volarus, which contain a multitude of dwarf planets and asteroids.

Beneath the orbit of Moa can be found a great mass of infrastructure, assembled over the centuries after the Alorath began to colonize the worlds beyond their own. Most of this is designed to collect power from the star itself. The Alorath have also undertaken a number of other engineering projects including the terraforming of Doresyl, Shirus and Rellis.

Population

Being found in the core of the Vernarcan Federation, Verda's planetary system has an enormous population. Most of this population resides in the inner system, particularly surrounding Jevethra and Teralla, both on planetary surfaces and in a multitude of space habitats of varying sizes and builds. While the final offensive of the Void caused a great deal of damage to the Federation, the Void mainframe was broken before the voidspears could reach past the orbit of Nayeren and the planets and people of Verda suffered much lower losses than their neighbors endured.

Due to how gravity works, concentrations of spaceborne population exist around every planet, major moon, and other sources of gravity, be they Glau or Telamon. Surface populations also reside on almost every object down to the smallest asteroids getting stuff carved in them.

Trivia

Verda is a G-Type Star, one of the more massive star types that can host habitable planets.
It is in a relatively rare ternary system, with Audras and Taozora.
In the earliest iteration of this project, Verda was known as "Sunny", and was an M-type star of 0.34 solar masses 60 AU away from "Other Sunny", an even smaller M-type star which would evolve into Audras over the next decade of writing.
