The Szalana Wormhole is the only stable wormhole discovered by the powers of the Ervo and Hinthorn sectors, and other such structures are likely to be extremely rare in the Silky Way. Before its discovery in 123 AC by Commander Va'aksa Errat of the FSS Neitzel, stable wormholes were considered to be theoretical at best to the peoples of both regions.
Names
To the religion of the Eitri, of the Dosi System in the Hinthorn Sector, the Szalana Wormhole is often identified with the legendary Heaven's River, and they always referred to it as such. The ever-practical computational systems of the Void merely referred to it as "the anomaly", as did some other groups residing in the Apple Nebula. Master Tar Lavon of the Vauratin Empire famously referred to it as the "Eye of Destiny" in their speech at the beginning of the War of the Broken Bow. The mythology practiced in the nation of Eskra decided that it was the mythical Straight Way, the passage to the heavens, declaring that the Ervo Sector was a land of gods despite ample evidence to the contrary.
Astrography
The Szalana Wormhole connects two points within the Silky Way which are normally almost eighty-five thousand light-years apart. One terminus was located in interstellar space just beyond the Limit Cloud of the Eodis System, far from normal trade lines before its discovery, which took a major malfunction in Commander Errat's shuttle navigation systems. The other end orbits the primary star of the Yusia System as a trojan companion for the innermost planet Solray. At the maximum speed of the fastest Vernarcan Federation ships, it would take almost sixty years of nonstop, straight-line trip betweeen the two points, and well over a century traversing the galactic ring normally.
Most wormholes are momentary phenomena, like the spatial rift which took the ancient Tarasze from the lands of the Devore Imperium to the Anhooie System, but this one shows no signs of instability whatsoever, rendering it undetectable to gravitational wave sensors. The wormhole also shows no detectable rotation rate.
History
Origins
As natural wormholes are believed to be impossible, it is likely that the Szalana Wormhole and any others like it were built in the ancient past by some sort of ancient civilization or entity.
