Prior to the [[War of the Broken Bow]], Anamol's terraforming was a key project of the [[Verdan Federation]]. This was accomplished through thickening its atmosphere by shipping in nitrogen from the tremendous atmosphere of Admor, as well as oxygen processed from the regolith. Anamol is the largest and outermost moon of Admor, and is the most viable terraforming candidate in the system. Prior to the War of the Broken Bow, its transformation was almost complete and millions of people began to flood towards the new world, but its surface was utterly devastated by the forces of the Void on the final offensive, killing the vast majority of the population and reducing the surface to blasted wastes. Today, with most resources going towards rebuilding, it stands empty as a memorial to the lost.

Physical Characteristics

Anamol is the largest moon of Admor and the second largest moon in the Audras System. It is a cratered world with a thin atmosphere which is being thickened as part of the terraforming process. Anamol is almost entirely made of silicates, reducing its gravity and density, and meaning that there aren't very many resources there.

Anamol was geologically dead before terraforming began. However, the surface was only 80 million years old, suggesting either a recent formation or a large impact.

Anamol is confirmed to have a very thin ring system from dust collected from circumplanetary space around Admor. This ring system is not much of a hazard to incoming spacecraft with proper shielding, but must be avoided to keep maintainance costs down. These rings are made mainly of small dust particles, and have a series of gaps from the gravitational influence of Anamol's parent planet.

Internal Structure

The moon's composition is almost entirely consisting of silicate material. However, there exists a small, iron-rich core of a radius possibly smaller than 200 km, surrounded by a molten boundary layer of similar composition. Despite its low density compared to objects like Praxis and Doresyl, this still makes it one of the densest satellites in the system purely by virtue of not being made of ice.

Magnetic Field

Anamol possessed a natural magnetic field of less than 0.2 nanoteslas, or less than a hundred thousandth that of Teralla, so faint as to render it completely irrelevant outside of a curiosity. This is nowhere near strong enough to form a global dipolar field, and originates from crustal magnetization from much earlier in the moon's history when the original dynamo was still operating. Early in its history, Anamol's magnetosphere was likely of a similar strength to Esera's today, but this field expired around a billion years ago as the iron core cooled and crystallized.

Part of the terraforming process was the construction of orbital ring structures, powering artificial dynamos to generate a magnetic field to protect the planet's new atmosphere. This brought the planet's effective field strength almost back up to what it originally was. With this infrastructures destruction at the hands of the Void and the bombardment of the planetary surface, the melting of much of the moon's crust has removed even the original pathetic magnetic field from the rock.

Surface Features

Prior to its bombardment by the Void, Anamol had an enormously varied surface. Its most extensive topographical feature was the Antar Impact Structure near the sub-Admor point, some 2,870 km in diameter, the largest crater on Anamol and among the largest in the Verda System. At 14 km deep, Antar's scope included the deepest point on the moon, and one of the first places to be submerged as terraforming began. The highest points were among the Carillon Highlands a few thousand kilometers away, which may have been uplifted by Antar's oblique formation. Other large impact basins like Sanaris, Esan, and Yal possessed regionally low elevations and uplifted rims.

Long assumed to be geologically dead, the discovery of cracks and faults in Sanaris Basin proved otherwise in 440 BC. Since Anamol did not have tectonic plates, its tectonic activity was slow and cracks developed as it lost heat. Of course, now it really doesn't have tectonic plates, and tectonic activity has been beaten out of existence.

Volcanic Features

Wrinkle ridges on Anamol's far side

The largest features on Anamol, clearly visible from high orbit, were the great, largely featureless basaltic plains. These were solidified lava plains dating from the Audras system's Late Heavy Bombardment. Although similar to the smaller-scale basalts found on planets like Teralla, these plains had a substantially higher iron content and no water-altered minerals. These plains covered the vast majority of the planet, with the exceptions of regions like the Carillon Highlands that escaped the ancient flood of magma, and were later covered by many large and small craters. Distinct flow margins could be seen, showing boundaries between different episodes of lava flow.

Cooling and contraction of the basaltic lava resulted in the creation of wrinkle ridges in some regions of Anamol's surface. These sinuous ridges extended for hundreds of kilometers and often outlined buried structures within the mare, including the hundreds-of-kilometers deep edifice containing the Flashpoint discovered at the planet. While the surface is now completely molten, it is believed that the Flashpoint site survived due to its depth. Concentric depressions were also created along maria edges, occurring as the basalts sink under their own weight, causing the edges to fracture and separate.

Sinuous rilles found across the basaltic surface of the moon were generally extinct lava channels or collapsed lava tubes. They typically originated from volcanic vents, meandering for dozens of kilometers and sometimes branching. They sometimes featured sharp turns and bends that are uncommon on habitable worlds like Teralla.

This volcanism also altered many large and small craters in various ways, including filling them to variable extents, and raising and fracturing their surfaces from volcanic material being uplifted beneath them. Many of these craters were submerged during terraforming, but Gesel Crater's rim was above water prior to the bombardment. Some craters were entirely volcanic in origin, getting their start as collapsed calderas and the like. These craters were relatively rare, and tend to be smaller, shallower, and much more irregularly shaped, lacking the uplifted rims characteristic of an impact detonation.

Shield volcanoes and volcanic domes were also found across the surface, with other regions of pyroclastic deposits and cinder cones made of high-viscosity lava present as well. The Anamolian maria covered 89% of the planetary surface, due in part to an an abnormal concentration of heat-producing elements that was present, causing the underlying mantle to heat up, melt partially, and rise to the surface. Most of the basalts erupted only 80 million years ago, suggesting a trigger of some sort. The surviving highlands covering 11% of the surface were as old as one would expect, 1.9 billion years, so its not like the moon is actually that young.

Modern State

Anamol as of the present day, after its bombardment by the Void in 150 AC

In 150 AC, just before the close of the war, the final offensive of the Void carved a bloody path through Federation space, destroying enormous amounts of infrastructure and ending the lives of trillions. It was the single most deadly attack in the history of the known Ervo Sector, and those who were left alive were left with intractable problems resulting from the destruction of that infrastructure. The people of Anamol were not among those left alive. One of the last shots fired in the war utterly destroyed the surface, the Voidspear bombarding it into molten lava just minutes before the Void's dissolution in the aftermath of the Battle of the Colony 90,000 light-years away.

History

Prehistory

1.9 billion years ago, Anamol formed alongside the rest of Audras' planets, out of material gathered in the gravity of its parent planet Admor. Its days began in fire, with a number of great impacts breaking open the newly formed crust and spreading lava across the surface. After the system's Late Heavy Bombardment concluded, its history was dominated largely by minor impacts.

Roughly 1.1 billion years ago, the Qomarat Empire passed through, likely dismissing it as largely useless in the short time that it occupied realms this far away from Qomar. Deep underground, they left behind a Flashpoint, an artifact designed to allow rapid transport between copies of itself. Today, the original Flashpoint network is completely nonfunctional, at least near the Ervo Sector.

As the system aged, Audras slowly but steadily brightened. Its originally icy surface slowly sublimated away, exposing most of the rocky regolith beneath (outside of permanently shadowed polar crater) and giving it a thin atmosphere of such evaporated material.

Discovery & Exploration

Shortly after the first Alorath colony was established on their sister world of Esera, the Idromar 1 probe conducted an exploratory mission of the inner Audras system. This revealed a number of things, from the first good images of Horos, Admor, and Anamol to the preponderance of dwarf planets in the Tantrica Belt. Idromar 2 shot across the gulf between Verda and Audras soon after, bringing with it a set of probes, one of which conducted a landing on Anamol's surface and uncovered the first evidence of the Flashpoint artifact by measuring gravitational distortions in spacetime in the moon's vicinity.

The first manned mission to the Audras System saw Anamol as a top priority due to the system's lack of naturally habitable worlds, establishing a scientific base on the moon's surface. The simply named Anamol Base Camp 1 became Teralla's first "interstellar" installation, designed to function self-sufficiently without resupply from the homeworld 400 AU away. This was the first such self-sufficient structure in the history of Terallan space exploration.

ABC1 played another role in history beyond these notable firsts, with its survey telescopes providing the first detection of the infamous Verna generation ship V'Straki en route to Liratan. This advance warning allowed the nations of Teralla and their colonies time to mobilize against the perceived threat to their territory, coming far closer to an armed conflict with the reclusive Verna than would have been possible without such advance warning.

Colonization

After peace was struck with the crew and passengers of the V'Straki, and the existence of sapient alien life was confirmed, things went smoothly. The colonization of Anamol continued, with plans for its terraforming being drafted in 77 BC. As the vast majority of the nascent population lived on the trailing hemisphere of the near-airless moon, evacuating them was not necessary to begin the process of importing water from the Arran Belt. The first comet struck the planet the next year, 5,400 kilometers around the planet from the main plateau settlements.

The few people who lived in the lowlands of the planet were quickly evacuated, their settlement infrastructure moved to the plateaus and mountain ranges. As more comets struck the impact zone, nitrogen was imported from the parent planet Admor's plentiful supplies and oxygen was liberated from the silicate crust or Admor's even-more-plentiful Carbon Dioxide. The atmosphere began to thicken and the first oceans began to form.

Modern Times

The terrorist attacks of Teralla Prime starting in 2 BC interrupted the terraforming efforts, severely damaging Admor's collector systems. These attacks continued across the Verda System in an attempt to force the people of the Verda System to abandon relations with alien powers. However, Captain Sa Sro Reyma of Leno aboard their ship Danakil managed to avert their most catastrophic attack, diverting an incoming water-bearing comet away from the settled regions of the moon. During this unexpected return to the Verda System, Reyma also managed to uncover a connection between Teralla Prime's activities and similar groups within the Quantis System, Starrial System, Erdath System, and Dernar System, as well as their surrounding colonies. This discovery, publically blasted on the space internet across the Verda System and transmitted to the governments of the other four nations, immediately discredited Teralla Prime's stated goals by revealing their hypocritical collaboration with alien groups.

This climactic event ensured that Teralla Prime, the similar group Ta'ishar Kuna'uashi based at Campura, and other smaller terrorist cells failed in their attempt to prevent the unification of the Vernarcan Federation. Most of these groups dissolved in obscurity in the years following the foundation, although some true believers still exist without any capability to act upon their beliefs. The terraforming of Anamol resumed after Admor's collection equipment was repaired from the attacks by 1 AC. Due to the confluence of its position in the core of Federation space and its comparative unimportance compared to its surroundings, Anamol was largely unaffected by both the Tyran War and the Falacian Cold War, as well as the number of smaller conflicts and incidents which occurred across history until the outset of the War of the Broken Bow.

The Siege of Campura and the Kedr Campaign in particular caused many refugees to settle on the moon and many other worlds nearby. When the Void made contact with the nations of the Apple Nebula in 146 AC, they replaced the Alliance of Five as the Yazera Pact's opponent in the war, and normalized relations led to species of the Hinthorn Sector and Ervo Sector migrating to each other, including to and from Anamol.

By this time, the population of the planet had risen to 41.7 billion people, spread across the increasingly habitable surface in a number of great cities. However, Anamol's rise to prominence was brutally interrupted by the Void's final offensive in 149, carving a path of blood through the nations of the Ervo Sector until its final destruction with the sacrifice of Su'uni Ash Nikal in the Battle of the Colony.
