The Tyran Free State was the most direct successor state of the Tyran Empire following the Athos Supernova of 41 AC. Its capital was uniquely set at New Tarash almost a decade into its existence. Much unlike its predecessor, the Free State had generally amicable relations with its neighbors, including the Vernarcan Federation, before it became a Federation member state in 88 AC.

History

Post-Supernova

After the Athos Supernova destroyed Tarash and much of the surrounding worlds, the Tyran Empire, already much diminished by the Tyran War, was thrown into disarray. This period of abject chaos ruled the former space of the Empire for several years, but the ruling council of Rigela declared themselves the successors of the destroyed Tyran Senate at Tarash. They began the process of terraforming on the outer world of Dewea, rechristening it New Tarash and starting to settle it by 59 AC.

Looking back on the genocidal actions of their predecessors, the leaders of the newly established Tyran Free State swore a binding oath on the souls of those lost in the Athos Supernova that they would never return to such actions. This, along with those lost to said actions, is commemorated by a vast memorial on the Grief World, an icy planet orbiting in the distant Rigela System. Following this, the new Senate set to work bringing together the shattered remnants of the empire. The habitats in orbit of Smizok, Gagibah, Vernarca, Dran, and other systems sent their first representatives to the new organization in 61 AC.

In order to protect itself from the incursions of the Falacian Dominion, the Federate of Varaltin-Zartha entered a close relationship with their erstwhile enemies, sending observer representatives to the Tyran Senate and receiving aid while still maintaining official independence. In 85 AC, the Free State began the admission process to join the Vernarcan Federation, with the mandatory investigation clearing them for admission around two years later. But this era of peace would come to an end with the abrupt return of Shahso's loyalist fleet, made up of seeming deserters after his death in 9 AC. In around 87 AC, his fleet, with its crew held in stasis and the ships on programmed courses into deep space before returning to their home, arrived over the shattered ruins of Tarash and began to lay waste to the remaining "oath breakers". The Tyran Senate lacked the means to help fight them on their own, and appealed to their neighbors to help fight off this new threat.

The Vernarcan Federation had become a great power since the fall of the Empire, and their military industrial complex had the necessary strength to begin to fight off this new influx of enemy ships. While finishing their end of the admission paperwork, they sent their impressive fleets into Tyran space to assist their military with fighting Shahso's loyalists. Indeed, their contributions led to the crucial victory in the climactic Battle of the Pulses, where the loyalist fanatic fleet was defeated by the coalition of Enolian, Tyran, and Federation ships. They still kept trying in vain to reclaim the old empire from the "oath breakers", destroying enormous amounts of civilian infrastructure in both the Tyran Free State and the breakaway nations from the Tyran War, but they would finally be destroyed in the humiliating defeat at Veltoris, where most of the loyalist fleet was destroyed or captured.

As a Vernarcan Federation member state

Just days after the battle of Veltoris, the Free State's government officially signed the last of the paperwork, joining the Vernarcan Federation. With this, assistance was much easier to get, and the lingering damage of the Athos Supernova as well as the new damage of the loyalists' return began to be fixed at a much higher rate than the ailing Free State alone was capable of. Being part of the largest power in the Vernarca Nebula ensured that Falacian shenanigans, which began in earnest well before the loyalists' return, never went past occasional skirmishes with border patrols. The Salkoran Shipyards at Rigela continued to manufacture starships, augmented by the technology exchange that came with being a Federation member and massively increased in power compared to their Imperial predecessors.

This state of peace continued until the outset of the War of the Broken Bow. The Free State's ships, integrated into the Federation military, were very effective at defending against the initial incursions from the Alliance of Five, and later alongside the Alliance fleets when the real enemy, the Void, was revealed. When the Void made its final incursion, one of its Spears made for the Rigela System, laying waste to habitats in its path. With dozens of other spears gunning for highly populated and valuable targets across the Vernarca Nebula, no help could be given to this one. The fight against it raged for light-years, with every ship in interception range converging on it and raining hellfire for almost a week. The battle finally ended when, far away, the alliance fleet led by the FSS Kareland finally destroyed the Void's central hub at the Battle of the Colony. The Spear went inert less than an astronomical unit away from Shah Tarash, and was one of the only Void ships to not self-destruct upon the loss of the hub due to the damage the fleet inflicted on it. Today, the carnage of the Broken Bow is being rebuilt from, and the galaxy is finally at peace.

Astrography

The Tyran Free State can be found in the central Vernarca Nebula, filled as it is with huge, volatile stars, and is slowly expanding towards the unclaimed galactic west. Major systems include:

  • Rigela – site of the nation's capital, Shah Tarash
  • Gagibah
  • Vernarca – binary Wolf-Rayet stars, key energy production facilities
  • Smizok
  • Athos – supernova remnant, the creation of which dealt the death blow of the Tyran Empire
  • Anhooie – former location of Tarash before its destruction
  • Hadra
  • Dran
  • Unexploited protostar systems, considered too dangerous to settle

Neighboring Powers

The Tyran Free State has direct borders with the Falacian Dominion, the Federate of Varaltin-Zartha (protectorate status), Voyorras, Marakat, and the space controlled by the Obilehem Intelligence. It also borders a stretch of unclaimed space to the galactic northwest, which it is slowly expanding into.

Capital

File:New Tarash.png

Shah Tarash, which translates simply to New Tarash or Tarash Reborn, is a terraformed world in the Rigela System and the new adopted homeworld of the Tarasze. Following the destruction of Tarash in 41 AC, the newly established Free State chose to set its new capital here, before beginning the terraforming process and converting infrastructure in the Rigela System towards habitation installations. The attacks of Shahso's loyalist fleet never reached the system, but it still felt the loss of trade lines during the conflict. Afterwards, Tarasze engineers descended from Rigela's original purpose as a shipyard were sent across the nation to help rebuild from the conflict.

Today, New Tarash and its moons are still not the largest concentration of Tarasze. That honor falls to Canamar. But its population is steadily growing as the species recovers from the catastrophe. The planet and its three moons are living up to the name of Tarash, and it will only get better from here, especially after the advent of Federation membership.

Government

See also: Tyran Empire#Government

The government of the Tyran Free State was much the same as that of its predecessor, albeit with some checks and balances and a more democratic method for the election of senators to prevent the excesses of the Empire. Under the Free State, new senators were elected by all of the adult population in their district, rather than the old regime's system of self-selection and hereditary office.

This system remained largely in place after the Free State joined the Vernarcan Federation, although some minor fixes were made to ensure that the entire adult population really could exercise their right to vote.

Agencies and Institutions

Foreign Relations

The Tyran Free State maintained generally amicable diplomatic relations with all of its neighbors except the Falacian Dominion. It was officially allied with the Talarian Union and later the Vernarcan Federation, as well as the three larger former Tyran states. Voyorras later withdrew its Alliance after the dictator Fizir took power in 61, and the Materica Courts Union's control of Marakat strained relations. The Federate of Varaltin-Zartha was a protectorate of the Free State, with guaranteed military and economic support against any shenanigans from the Falacian Dominion, prior to its declaration of isolationism and neutrality in 55 AC. Its allies largely remained the same after its accession into the Vernarcan Federation in 86 AC.
