The Vauratin Empire is one of the largest nations within the Apple Nebula. Once controlled by the iron fist of a fascist government, the recent overthrow of that government in Rexir's Coup in 146 has brought about a new growth of freedom and allowed its participation in the Grand Alliance against the Void.
History
Background and Impri Civil War
Reorganization into the Empire
Initial Conquests
With the Empire established, and with need for a common enemy to help solidify the new regime, the plan for expansion began.
Though consolidation was a major reason, there were many factors lead to the drive for the Empire to expand it's territory - Some sought to create a larger larger buffer zone between the Empire's borders and Konax, to help secure the capital. Resource acquisition was also a reason, as plans were made to both fortify and enlarge the fleets for further conquest - Knocking out any neighbouring powers would allow the Empire both to pillage their resources and production capabilities, but also prevent them from exporting to rival nations. Others argued that the original reason was the most important - Creating a common cause would be good for the fledgling Empire, giving it stability, and an enemy to rally against for the many issues that would occur during this time.
One of the main reasons however, was pre-emptive defence. Many of the higher ups believed that the mere existence of these neighbouring states posed an existential threat to the Empire, and so, plans were made to remove them.
The Empire's first conquests were not done militarily, but via diplomacy - A few concessions and mining rights from the Tix'Poxian Assembly. However, emboldened by this, the Empire violated the agreement, and, seeking to not enter an open state of conflict, the Assembly allowed this to happen. Sensing weakness, the Vauritain Empire continued it's displays of military bravado, and making more and more demands. Over time, the Empire took more and more from the Assembly, until it had eventually taken a full on planet within the Assembly. It was only then that the Assembly fully understood that the Vauratin would not stop until they had annexed all their territory. Other, smaller powers in the region however, made no effort to stop this, believing that this would appease the Empire. They were wrong, and before long, the Assembly, and several of it's smaller neighbours were either bullied into submission, or simply taken.
At the same time as all of this, and to help sell the illusion of military dominance to the Tix'Poxian Assembly, the Empire staged a false-flag operation by the Yxja K'Nerka - Blaming the destruction of a Vauratin military ship on them, the Empire launched a full scale assault against the Yxja. The attack came as such a surprise that no response came until a full day after the invasion, at which point the battle fleets were called in. This conflict was known as the First War by the Vauratin.
Despite being more advanced than their enemies, the Vauratin struggled during this conflict. The Yxja K'Nerka were masters are hit-and-run, as well as scorched earth tactics. Though they lacked firepower, they were resilient, resourceful, and ferocious in their defence of their territory. Though it took them far longer than anticipated, the Vauratin were able to take control of the Yxja K'Nerkan homeworld, which suffered ruthless retribution as punishment, both for the citizens to understand, and for those of it's neighbours - Resist the Empire, and the consequences will be dire.
Instead though, many did resist, and the Empire chose to focus on the smaller opponents first, expanding their territory piece by piece, aquiring resources, and then turning them on their new neighbours.

Capital

The capital of the Vauratin Empire is and has always been the lonely planet of Konax. The sole planet of the intermediate-mass black hole Impri, Konax is a semiarid, tidally locked world whose day side is dominated by a large, briny ocean. The life on this world has adapted to the extraordinary levels of salts in the environment, and is notably hostile even to other denizens of the planet. The capital city of the planet and seat of governmet of the entire empire is the southern city of Tarax Nar, with a population of nearly 29 million people within its metropolitan area.
