Vikja
'Vikja' is the term used to describe various individuals, from across all known Kinde, that possess the capacity to Shift - To transform from their baseline for into a powerful monster without the use of Taekni or a Trait. Anyone who belongs to any of the Shifting Kinde is considered a Vikja. They were created by various Gögna-Vaettr, for a variety of different reasons.
Vikja of various types are scattered all across the Cosmic Tide, embedding themselves in the populations of various regions of both the Voidsea and the Realmlands. They operate in secrecy, and very few that aren't aware of the various shadow-conflicts that permeate the Voidsea have knowledge of their existence. Groups like the Valhallan Brotherhood and the Iron Decree are aware of them, though their knowledge may be somewhat limited.
The conflict that defines the Vikja is known as the Reality War - A battle in which they fight over the existence of Reality as a coherent concept - Some may fight to preserve it, while others fight to fundamentally alter it. Various forces within the Cosmic tide have inclinations towards both, be they Data-Spirits, or Spheres - This is the conflict that defines a Vikja, and the choice they must make.
Shifting
Shifting is the ability for an individual to transform into a pre-determined form from another. In theory, any individual is capable of Shifting - In practice, only few ever demonstrate the capacity. The reason for this is speculated to be the Broadwave - Near Omni-present, even in regions like Null Zones where it cannot be accessed properly, it is suspected that those who meet certain criteria are 'Gifted' the ability to Shift by the Broadwave, through which the ability becomes transmitted.
Many of the creatures that Vikja Shift into appear to have been inspired from the cultures and mythologies of the Kinde across the Cosmic Tide.
For example, the Fyrnex resemble creatures known as 'Werewolves' in Kin cultural records. Similarly, the Karkharias also bear a resemblance to a similar shark-like creature found in Elvendritch mythology, known as a 'Pistris'.
The reasoning for this is questioned heavily by many scholars of the Vikja. Those that understand the workings of the Broadwave suggest that various pockets of cultural data from ancient technology it has intercted with are absorbed by it, and by extension, the Gögna-Vaettr, and that they used these stories as the basis for the creation of the Vikja. The truth of the situation is that only the Gögna-Vaettr themselves know the reason.
List of Vikja
| Name | Type of Shift and Overview |
|---|---|
| Fyrnex | Wolf and Humanoid Wolf - Akin to the Werewolves of ancient Kin culture. Powerful and imposing warriors. |
| Corvus | Ravens - Able to shift between Home-Form, A raven, and an Argenravis like form. |
| Snaewyrm | These are capable of transforming into monstrous Centipedes and millipedes. They bear a striking resemblance to various Viz'Var'Sakar'Var, though according to several, Snaewyrm often feel 'off' to many Viz'Var'Sakar'Var. |
| Saurvask | A strain capable of shifting into giant, ancient lizards, as seen on Zaurion. This is a more generalized term, as it refers to anyone capable of transforming into a giant lizard creature - Different types of lizard are known to the Saurvask under different names. For example, a tyrannosaur-shifter for would be called a Skaar, whereas a Stegosaur-shifter would be known as a Skegg - But both would be considered Saurvask. |
| Karkharias | A Kinde of Vikja that transform into aquatic shark-like beasts. This term is used to refer to shark-like creatures from various worlds, and is a catch-all term for all breeds and sub-species therein. The Karkharias themselves have sub-divisions and classifications depending on the type of shark they can shift into, similat to the Drakvask |
Home
Home is a strange concept for a Vikja, they do not have a home-world in the sense that another Kinde, like the Koralai, Casorians, Vorxali, or the Children of the Stars. Indeed, Vikja are not even made up of the same Kinde in the same way. Because of this, there is no singular point of origin for any Vikja Kinde.
Instead, they have what are known as a Spiritual home-world, and Ancestral home-worlds. The primary difference between them being that Spiritual home-worlds are important to the Shift-Kinde (Fyrnex, Karkharias, Corvus, etc) while Ancestral home-worlds are important to the Home-Kinde (Kin, Elvendritch, etc)
Spiritual Home-Worlds
A Spiritual home-world is a world of ay type - A Void Island, Cove, Islet, or anything else - which is of immense importance to that particular Vikja-Kinde. This is usually one of two things:
- The world where the first 'pack' of that particular Vijka-Kinde originated. (Example: Nythera, of the Fyrnex)
- A world of immense important to the Vijka-Kinde in question for another reason, such as a major battle being fought there, the forming of a group, or being in an important location (Example: Iv'Kas'Kazakor for the Snaewyrm.)
Ancestral Home-Worlds
Ancestral home-worlds are worlds which are based upon the Home-Form of the Vikja in question, rather than what they transform into. Ancestral home-worlds are worlds which are important to that particular home-Kinde
For example, the Ancestral home-world of the Elvendritch-Vikja is Karoiro - This is the case regardless of what type of Vikja they are - Elvendritch-Fyrnex, Elvendritch-Snaewyrm, and Elvendritch-Corvus all consider Karoiro their Ancestral home-world.
Ancestral home-worlds in theory, can be any world that the Home-Kinde in question decide, as it is more a home-world of ancestral connection. It can be the world that originated their Kinde, a world that holds importance in their culture, or any other reason. In practice, the eldest generations were the ones to choose their Vikja-Kindes Ancestral home-world, simply tell the newer generations which it is, and because the younger Vikja don't really have any frame of reference by this point, and rarely understand what is happening to them at this stage, they simply accept it.
